Album Of The Day-A Day Of Pigs-"Lecherous" (2007)

The Album Of The Day is "Lecherous" by A Day Of Pigs.

According to A DAY OF PIGS' official bio, ""the band's vocalist, Kevin LeBlanc, has already received international acclaim for his extraordinary and disturbing tattoo work, and one need look no further than his additions to skin to understand the dark subject matter of his lyrics. A theme such as betrayal, loss, greed and apathy seethe underneath LeBlanc's soul-wrenching howls and shrills, while the delivery of musical apocalypse behind him is handed out with pleasure. The rest of the band brings with it decades of performing, touring, and recording experience; guitarist Steve Silberg logged extensive time with seminal New Jersey hardcore acts ANOTHER STATE OF MIND and SMOTHER, drummer Bill 'Bixby' Belford was a member and integral contributor of other-worldly doom entrepreneurs SOLACE and TOW, and with our newest member T.J. on bass from the brutal FAT KID CAMP as well as LIVID."" The group adds, ""A DAY OF PIGS follows no man, seeks nothing from above, yet only wishes to trample under foot, the masses as they march hand in hand over the falls.""

Review:

Take the down-tuned riffage of Torche, a bit of Mastodon's early songwriting direction, and a heavy dose of Eyehategod's sludgy grit and the result is A Day of Pigs, the latest addition to the Spare Change Records roster. And with the fifty minutes of rumbling stoner metal offered up on Lecherous, it's not hard to understand why this small band from New Jersey deserves a thorough listen.

Lecherous bursts out of the gates with "Innominate," a track launching into a set Bloodhorse-esque riffs that received a Facedowninshit style makeover. Prominent low-end, driving drumming and howling lead guitar work all lead to one hell of an abrasive listening experience. "Way To Go Fuckface" lives up to its stellar name, successfully combining periods of Floor/Torche riffs, coarse bass tones, and moments of throaty singing. "The Lions Cry" explores some different musical territory, building from an eerily melodic intro into a slower, more sludge based number. Anyone looking for a strong dose of riff-heavy stoner metal should find a lot to enjoy in A Day of Pigs' Lecherous.

The only downside of the record comes with a few of its slower, cleaner melodies. Appearing mostly in the two instrumental tracks ("665," and, "666"), these interludes feel a little out of place with the majority of the disc's abrasive content. The intentions were certainly good, as such elements often help to round out an album, but the execution and placement are not as fluid as they could have been. Nevertheless, these cleaner moments are the minority on the disc, and the abundance of sludgy stoner metal riffs, coarse vocals, and thick low-end make Lecherous pretty impressive for a debut full-length.

Bottom Line: Listeners who enjoy everything from sludge metal to stoner rock should be jumping at the opportunity to check out A Day of Pigs' Lecherous. And any minor issues with album continuity are overshadowed by its gritty combination of influences and ruthless unleashing of solid riff after solid riff. (Nick, Lambgoat.com)

Mammatus Announces West Coast Tour Dates

Calling all brain glazers! Mammatus is loading up the Galactic Burger for a tour of the west coast. Accompanying them is Seattle’s Wildildlife, fresh off the success of their amazing debut on Crucial Blast Records.

Mammatus is a mind meltingly progressive psych rock band from the magical forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Since 2005 they have released two critically acclaimed albums on Holy Mountain Records and toured the US three times, most recently with Japan’s Acid Mother’s Temple. Mammatus plays rock music the way they like to hear it: ear shatteringly loud, ridiculous widdly wah guitar leads, thick head bangin’ riffs, proggy groovin’, and plenty of weird stuff. They’ve built a steady following of long hairs, beardo’s, hessians, and guitar nerds with such bangover inducing songs as “Dragon of the Deep” parts one, two and three, but this tour finds them playing all new unrecorded material that will make up their next album.

Wildildlife is a trio from Seattle known for their manic live energy. This beautiful band of hairy men summons up a wicked whirlpool of dense distorto crunch and freaky singing, raging metallic percussive pummel, tribal rhythms and crushing effects-soaked guitars, subdued floatational drones and ecstatically gorgeous melodies, all let loose in a series of sky-streaking eruptions of psychedelic lowcore and swirling, cosmic sludge. Their new album, Six, on Crucial Blast Records, has garnered a lot of attention lately, and rightly so, but these guys are best experienced live, for when they play the air turns into a particularly neon-blue-hued strain of cottage cheese, bathing the listener in mountains of distorted fuzz.

Nadja`s fourteen-minute-long song "Sandskin," from Skin Turns To Glass, released earlier this year by The End Records (originally released as a limited CD-R run by Belgium`s Nothingness Records), is available for download for free from Amazon.com

Nadja is a duo of Aidan Baker (guitars/vocals/piano/woodwinds/drums) and Leah Buckareff (bass/vocals) currently based in Toronto, Canada. Nadja originally began in 2003 as a solo project for Baker to explore the heavier/noisier side of his experimental/ambient guitar-based music. In 2005 Buckareff joined in order to make the project more than just a studio endeavour and allow Nadja to perform live.

Nadja creates music that has been variously described as drone metal, ambient doom, and shoegazer, incorporating influences from such diverse artists as Swans, Godflesh, My Bloody Valentine, and B>Codeine. Nadja combines soundscapes, electronics, and atmospheric vocals with snail-crawl, epic riffs and dirge-like percussion, tempering the cacophany with a certain ethereal melodicism such that the listener is enveloped in a sublimating wall of amorphous sound.

After several limited edition cdr releases, Nadja released their first official album, Truth Becomes Death, on Montreal`s Alien8 Recordings in 2005. They have since released material on Conspiracy Records, Profound Lore Records, and Archive Records, and have material out via The End Records and Crucial Blast Records.

Has Ironclad Returned?

From Ironclad:

Ironclad will be re-forming as soon as we get our drummer situation situated.

The planets have aligned and Danny G`s and Tank`s busy touring schedules (The Mother Truckers and the mighty MOD, respectively) have eased up enough to allow us to finally try to fill our vacant drummer position.

We will keep you all posted on the latest developments, and in the meantime we have posted a live version of "Clean," recorded at Rudyard`s in Houston, when we played there May `07 with mother effin Amplified Heat. Will post more tracks soon.

Thanks to all in the past year who`ve asked us if Ironclad would ever live to rock again. We shall, and you will be the first to know when we do.

Until then, keep rock alive.

Translation Loss Records Signs Battlefields

Hailing from the depths of Minnesota, Battlefields has been touring relentlessly for the last three years and accruing massive accolades for their astounding live performances and their two previous records, Stained with the Blood of an Empire and Entourage of the Archaic, both released on indie label Init Records. Fresh off their first European tour this summer with Belgium’s AmenRa (whom they previously did an extensive US tour with during the spring of 2008), Battlefields new material encompasses a new direction in extreme and epic mind-expansive music.

On top of sharing the stage with the likes of Rosetta, Pelican, These Arms Are Snakes, Kylesa, Big Business, and Murder by Death, to name a few, Battlefields appeared at SXSW this year playing highly successful showcases with the likes of Russian Circles, Coliseum, This Will Destroy You, Yakuza, and Genghis Tron.

Battlefields’ yet untitled Translation Loss debut is currently being recorded at The Devil`s Workshop in Minnesota with drummer and engineering Rob Schmidt manning the helm and will be mastered by Nick Zampiello at New Alliance Audio. Battlefields’ Translation Loss debut will see an early 2009 release and have the art and graphic design of Paul Romano grace its presence.

Analysis of Bison Kills - New Album Out Now

`Vantage sees the return of the UK progressive doom/sludge/metal act Analysis of Bison Kills (formerly know as Tear Gas & Plate Glass) and features just over 30 minutes of new music. The album comes packaged in a beautiful gatefold card sleeve with artwork by underground comics artist Danica Novgorodoff.

Expect brutal cerebral riffing, technical jazz infected drumming, scathing vocal attacks and mellow clean passages. AOBK offer up diverse and dynamic heavy music that`s difficult to pigeon hole. The whole affair was mastered by Nick Zampiello (Knut, Converge, Isis, Craw) so you know it`s going to sound good!

Black Mayonnaise News

From Black Mayonnaise:

The two respective labels who were supposed to release the split 12" with Bowel Fetus and the split 7" with Rigor Sardonicous have been experiencing financial difficulties... so I have decided to take responsibility for releasing both of these myself.

My new "label" does not yet have a name and will be a very small operation with a focus on efficiency and quality. I`ve taken a second job for this purpose and will do my best to make sure both of these releases come out looking very nice. By the time all bands have finished recording/mixing I will be financially ready for getting these done.

The split with Bowel Fetus was supposed to be released on color vinyl, but if the apparent shortage on color pellets continues into early next year, I will be looking into having this on 180 gram vinyl. The two members of BF live on opposite sides of Australia and plan on getting together to record late this year. I`m hoping that all music for this can be mastered and off to the pressing plant by January at the latest, with a projected release date around summer 2009. The run size for this will probably be 300 copies.

I intend to press the split 7" with Rigor Sardonicous on 48 gram vinyl, but I may change this to a 12" instead, either on colored vinyl or 180 gram... this decision is still pending and will be finalized by October. I`m still discussing recording schedules with R.S. but if things go smoothly I hope to have this to the pressing plant early next year. The run for this one will be between 300-500 copies.

To the best of my knowledge the vinyl re-issue of the TTSSATTSR album on THTFL Records should be released sometime in 2009, this will include a brand new track.

I talked with Land O` Smiles and will be waiting for the "go" signal when they are ready to release the Black Lodge Series 12"

I`ve also been asked to once again record the closing track for the second Drum Machinegun compilation on Relapse Records.

There is also more... but this will be announced later.

I`m working VERY hard to take care of everything mentioned above.

I will do my best to keep the Black Mayonnaise myspace current and up to date as best as I can with my limited time.

Thanks for your interest.

Øresund Space Collective To Get Inside Your Head

Sulatron-Records, the record label run the psychedelic underground mastermind Dave Schmidt (aka Sula Bassana), is very proud to present you it`s very new release by Øresund Space Collective, Inside Your Head.

This is the fourth CD by the completely improvisational space rock band from the Øresund region in Sandinavia. The band is made up of members from Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Malmo, Sweden area. The music on this CD was recorded at the Black Tornado Studios during the same sessions as the infamous The Black Tomato CD. It was also mixed by Grant Master Henrik Udd and the jams were turned into a 70 minute psychedelic music collage by Sula Bassana.

The music on this CD is meant to take the listener on a musical journey in sound and space. Leave your normal life behind, close your eyes and fly into the unknown reaches of your mind. The music is meant to get Inside Your Head and give you a pleasureful and unique listening experience. One beautiful thing about the music and the trop is that is not predicatble. You don`t know where it is going or what you will hear. You just go with the flow of the band. Sula did a brilliant job of placing the tracks in a perfect order for a nice psychedelic flow and creating a unique segue between the tracks. We think all people who like intstrumental psychedelic music will really enjoy our new CD.

The artwork is taken from MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) pictures of the human brain. All of the song titles are specific areas of the brain as well. Choose your favorite.

The players were: Magnus - space guitar, synth; Tobias - space guitar; Sebastian - space guitar; Michael - bass (track 4); Jocke - bass; Søren - drums and percussion; Scott - synths; Mogens - synths; Ola - synths, Fender Rhodes.

Album Of The Day-Tricky Woo-"First Blush" (2005)

The Album Of The Day is "First Blush" by Tricky Woo.

Review:

Forget the Darkness, Canadian retro-rockers Tricky Woo channel the sleaze and debauchery of the pre-hair metal '80s without the aid of a killer falsetto and the requisite album-closing power ballad. The group's rise from blues-based, psychedelic garage band to full-time metal gods has not been without strife, as it took them four years and a breakup (lauded axe man Adrian Popovitch has returned to the fold) to conjure the blistering First Blush. From the very first notes of "Pink Thunder," it's clear that the boys from Montreal have their mojo back. Singer/guitarist Andrew Dickson, who channels the Cult's Ian Astbury and David Lee Roth simultaneously throughout the record, sneers like a punk with biker ambitions, while Popovitch peppers the choruses with enough harmonic leads to please even the most discerning K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton (Judas Priest) fan. Fans who mourned the band's demise after 2001's woefully uneven Sables Magiques have reason to rejoice. (James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide)

Album Of The Day-The Sabians-"Beauty For Ashes" (2002)

The Album Of The Day is "Beauty For Ashes" by The Sabians.

Review:

This eagerly awaited (at least in underground rock circles) debut marks the return of drummer Chris Hakius and guitarist/vocalist Justin Marler of doom metal legends Sleep fame. But fans expecting a Sleep-like barrage of unholy grinds and mind-numbing doom metal should look elsewhere (possibly to the also Sleep-derived High on Fire), since the Sabians' Beauty for Ashes is an entirely different animal. Indeed, despite being produced by another sludge metal legend in former Fudge Tunnel leader Alex Newport, the album is a highly melodic affair, presenting atmospheric hard rock alternating tasteful harmonics with brooding soft/hard dynamics. The opener, "Via Dolorosa," weaves sheets of melancholy guitar textures balanced somewhere between melodic flow and metallic power -- evoking bands like King's X and Soundgarden, while sounding exactly like neither. Song two, "Breathe," on the other hand, isn't nearly as subtle. With its two-part riff (the first resembling a nervous exhalation; the second a sharp gasp of fear), the track is a slow-burning behemoth of pent-up tension, teasing and tormenting the listener with the promise of a release that never comes. The ensuing material can't compare to it in terms of evoking sheer rapture, but continues to impress nonetheless with its overall complexity and diversity. The spidery-riffed "Black Lie" achieves another distinctive high point before giving way to a series of more laid-back, almost folk-oriented songs, culminating in the plaintive acoustic strumming on the rain-swept "Lull." The dreary, ten-minute downpour which follows belies the band's far-from-morose outlook (but still sounds pretty cool) and, all in all, the Sabians' beautifully layered trance riffs show incredible promise of things to come. (Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide)

01. Via Dolorosa
02. Breathe
03. Beauty For Ashes
04. Restoration

Straight out of San Francisco erupt Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, a band that formed early in the new millennium but sounds like it just washed in from the '60 and early '70s. Assemble Head's self-produced and self-released debut album was available in minimal quantities (500 to be precise), so Ekranoplan will be most people's introduction to their approach in the studio. The group's core trio sports a wide array of influences, all of which burst out in this recording. "Mosquito Lantern," for instance, is built around an Iron Butterfly-ish riff, a hard rockin' blues that slides into rockabilly and then prog before the song's done. "A Bourbon for Rudy" is even more blues-based, and bleeds straight out of "The Corner Zombies," which is brighter in sound, with a definite Jefferson Airplane bent. In contrast comes the darker "Occult Roots," a song that slips right into Black Sabbath's satanic realms, while the blistering "D Brown" boasts Hendrix-esque guitars early in, but swiftly settles into a delicious Creamy jam. And "jam" defines much of the band's sound, even though most of the tracks clock in at under four minutes, a style that reaches heady heights on the fabulously spacy instrumental "The Morning Maiden." Even so, the Head's heads aren't totally in the past -- "Ellen Koray," for instance, is a fabulous mix of classic and recent styles, while the title track spatters grunge all over prog rock. Prog fans will have a marvelous time comparing the Head to their originators, while everyone else will revel in the group's musicianship and glory in the rich textures and atmospheres that infuse this splendid set. Sons of Otis To Play One Last Toronto Show

From Sons of Otis:

One more time Toronto... Sept.28 at The Elmo (upstairs), 10 pm sharp!

Do to the lame turnouts at shows in this town (10 - 20 people), we have decided if only 10 cats want to see us play, then they can come to our studio and watch us jam! We`ve been doing this for 16 years and we don`t need the hassles from shit clubs anymore! We`re not kidding - that`s it!

We are not breaking up since we have a new CD coming out, but it`s just not worth playing out in this town anymore! If something special comes up, we`ll see! We would rather play in the US or Europe! Thanks for your support!

Album Of The Day-The Warlocks-"Rise And Fall" US Version (2001)

The Album Of The Day is the US version of "Rise And Fall" by The Warlocks.

Review:

This nine-member group -- which includes two drummers and four guitarists -- often focuses heavily on dark, amphetamine-fueled hard rock skree and titanic singular-riff freakouts (the jagged, sawtooth guitars of the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" seem to be a huge influence). What's surprising, however, is that Rise and Fall kicks off and nearly reaches its apogee with the first track, "Jam of the Witches," which clocks in at nearly 15 minutes (and more than twice the length of a similarly titled "Jam of the Warlocks" from their eponymous Bomp EP). This first-take troglodyte rock juggernaut seems like it might be out of place in the sequence, but what follows isn't even remotely anti-climatic. In fact, there are a few surprises to put things back on track, including a handful of stonier ballads that wouldn't have sounded too out of place on any Pink Floyd album pre-Dark Side of the Moon. "House of Glass," one of leader/guitarist Bobby Hecksher's better vocal efforts, is a pastoral acoustic-strummed reverie (think David Gilmour's "Fat Old Sun" from Atom Heart Mother or those shambolic country-rock instros that Pink Floyd contributed to the Zabriskie Point soundtrack). A cleaner re-recording of "Song for Nico"(a rougher version appears on the band's EP) has a fuzz-soaked "Heroin"-esque vibe and comes off as a reverent tribute to the enigmatic chanteuse. A swaying stoner's waltz, "Motorcycles," lopes along nicely too. Then, after a surreptitious chunk of dead space amid a bit of guitar tuning and crowd chatter, a final lengthy jam ("Heavy Bomber") kicks in, but the spacier Spiritualized-sounding instro ultimately drifts along without going anywhere. The last track listed on the tray card, "Laser Beam," doesn't actually appear on the CD. Surely it's Hecksher's amusing way of perplexing anyone who attempts to find it buried somewhere. All in all, the Warlocks' first full-length is a solid effort from one of L.A.'s best live acts. After this release, the Warlocks signed with the Birdman record label. The Reformation of YOB

From YOB:

YOB is reforming to record a new album and do a limited number of shows. We have a number of new songs we are working on and our goal is to record in the Spring for a Summer 2009 release. We are very excited about this new material.

With word from Isamu Sato that he is too busy with family/work/new musical projects to commit to a YOB reunion, the task for Travis [Foster, drums] and I [Mike S, vocals/guitar] was to find a new bassist for YOB.

That has been accomplished in the excellent Aaron Reiseberg from Portland, Oregon. He is an old friend of ours, and has played in bands with Travis before. He has the chops and the enthusiasm we need for our new material and upcoming yet-to-be-determined shows.

We will now be rehearsing and getting ready to record in Spring 2009, and will possibly play our first comeback show in Portland, Oregon before the end of the year.

We hope to do two to three shows on the west coast, two to three on the east coast, and maybe get over to the UK/Europe for a couple of shows if promoters over there feel it would be worth their money to bring YOB over for a very short run. We will not add any other shows to these except in rare instances.

Any booking inquiries can be sent to Nathan Carson at Nanotear Booking: nanotear@hotmail.com.

YOB`s last album, The Unreal Never Lived, was released in 2005 via Metal Blade Records. The group disbanded shortly thereafter, with Mike forming the group Middian. That group was subsequently sidelined in 2008 following a cease and desist order from an obscure hardcore band from the Midwest that had trademarked the name “Midian.” Middian was supposed to return as Age Eternal, but those plans fell apart when drummer Scott Headrick quit the band and bassist Will Lindsay joined Wolves in the Throne Room. Mike and Will plan to record material together, under a yet-to-be-revealed name.

Album Of The Day-Giant Brain-"Plume" (2008)

The Album Of The Day is "Plume" by Giant Brain.

Review:

It makes sense that a trio from Detroit would wish to re-create the constant-forward-momentum vibe of Neu!'s Motorik rock and Kraftwerk's Autobahn, given how both were so inspired by the trance-state engendered by highway hypnosis. Given Detroit's place as one of the key cities of American metal and garage rock, however, it's equally commonsensical that Giant Brain rough up their take on vintage Krautrock with heavy guitar riffs and muscular drumming more akin to vintage Stooges. The five lengthy tracks on Plume unfurl slowly — "Looper" and "Krauter" alone account for 30-plus minutes of the album's running time — but implacably, built on riffs that develop into invitingly hypnotic drones. Plume isn't at all the usual fare for the Small Stone label, which usually deals in full-on stoner metal, but it's an intriguing diversion that bodes well for future cross-cultural experiments as more of the stoner metal audience discovers the lysergic possibilities of vintage Krautrock. The Kings of Frog Island To Release Second Album

The UK`s finest purveyors of stoned and enthroned heavy psych rock, The Kings of Frog Island, are about to release the long awaited follow up to their self titled 2005 debut album via Elecktrohasch Records this September.

The Kings Of Frog Island -2 is the second installment of the Kings` epic trilogy following a natural progression through the world of tripped out stoned jams and the explosive anthemic hits set up on the first album moving on into the void and beyond the black.

The second album from Mathew Bethancourt`s (Josiah/Cherry Choke) magnificent side-project is musically similar to the 2005 debut, but the Kings have used a wider range of instrumentation and production transcending the psychedelic space rock anthems of the first amazing album.

If the blues was invented in 2008, it would sound like this! Ten brilliant tracks between blues, gospel, stoner, psych and doom. An outstanding album released as CD and limited hand-numbered edition of 500 LPs on 180gr vinyl.

I have compiled these images now into an art book. Over 76 full color pages of the best of the best from my portfolio. It is now available to you for your discretionary visual consumption. New Band To Burn One To-Intodown

I have got a great new band for you guys to check out today. They are called Intodown and are from Texas. They combine Stoner Rock with Surf Rock for a very unique and cool sound. Check them out now!

Bio:

Falling down in the Rabbit hole is easy and the feeling you get when listening and watching Michael Clark and Into Down perform. With his channeling of Stoner-rock, Surf-rock, Prog-rock, Blues and the Psychedelic 60’s mixed with all his musical and poetic influences you can only imagine the experience that you will take on this journey into the deep trance that is intodown.

“There are times when playing music opens the door to another dimension, to another world. It’s a world of sonic ecstasy. No rules. No judgments. Just existing in the flow of a great, powerful energy. A trance state of sorts. Free. The state I call ‘down’. My goal is to find my way into down and to hold the door open for those who wish to enter.” A perfect description of Clark’s emotional and powerful expression of what he calls music. Music full of mystery.

Watching Clark play you soon realize that he is not playing like any other guitarist or musician. He is playing with an energy that is coming from another place. A state of non-being or a trance state of sorts where you step outside yourself and into another world or dimension. Something that is lost among many artists today. His listeners have said that “the music takes them on a trip, transports them somewhere, sort of opens them up.” Just the impact that his influences have been trying to do for years.

Set lists are thrown out the door when it comes to his shows. It is a very creative and powerful experience. The opening act, if there is one, could be a very strange poet, some sort of electric magician, or maybe a very large puppet explaining philosophy. His performance is usually lit by candles and an alter with a dull red spot shinning on the area where Clark stands. The alter is there to bring energy of truth, organic, realness and earth to the show and to him. There will also be a large screen that some members of the band will actually be animated characters. These characters will sing and talk and even emerge in real form on stage. The show is a psychedelic experience; it’s stepping outside the normal rock show format. The audience can get in on the action as well. With microphones set up around the floor the audience can step up to them and express themselves and contribute to the music. It’s not really a rock show but more like a musical experience with Clark playing what is coming through him as he give control over to something else. He tells a story that has been given to him at the moment. You never know what sound or expression will come out of his guitar, show and music. For one to fully understand who Mike Clark is, as a person, musician, magical man, all they would need to do is put his record on.

They have a great new album entitled "Brave New World". You can purchase it here.

Listen

Review:

Michael Clark leads the psychedelic decent into the rabbit hole with a variety of drummers, bass players and multi instrumentalists. Brave New World is a skillfully executed instrumental rock album that reverberates below the radar of mainstream pop with Clark making exquisite us of power chords, riffs, and improvisation.

Clark has studied the blueprints of early hillbilly rock, black blues, the late-'60's Clapton-Green-Page mob, and past and present garage bands. He relies exclusively on the use of a Gibson guitar and Hi-Watt amp, which provides sonic consistency as the band effortlessly, trips from an epic musical muse to an extended wild-ass jam.

The arrangements on the album range from 5 to 20 minutes in length, and although one is getting a great musical value, and one heck of a magical adventure, the songs may be too long for today's attention deficit disordered consumer.

As Clark and his band of subterranean lurkers speak in musical tongues about the past, art and existentialism they may very well be the future of rock'n'roll.

Album Of The Day-Litmus-"Planetfall" (2007)

The Album Of The Day is "Plantfall" by Litmus.

"Litmus, renegade agents of bludgeoning space rock, charging down from the giant behemoth of ugly rock n' roll gone warped & insane with too much Kool-Aid & bad acid. 'Planetfall' bursts from the speakers as if erupting from a gigantic supernova, heavy space rock the likes of which all burned out cosmonauts have only been dreaming of in delirious acid-fried visions for decades. When Litmus roars through the speakers like a psychic storm you know they really DO mean business. For fans of Hawkwind, Deep Purple, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd & Gong."

Review:

When progressive rock enthusiasts think of space rock, the first name that comes to mind is Pink Floyd. But for headbangers, the definitive space rock band has always been Hawkwind (who, unlike Pink Floyd, are quite relevant to heavy metal and hard rock). Hawkwind have epitomized a more metallic, hard rocking view of space rock, and on Planetfall, it is quite clear that Litmus identify with the metal/hard rock side of space rock that Hawkwind have been representing for many years. Hawkwind are a major influence on this 2007 release, which is not to say that this British band is a carbon copy of '70s-era Hawkwind — not at all. The influences on this 76-minute CD range from Hawkwind to Monster Magnet to punk to Pink Floyd (it is possible to be influenced by Pink Floyd's melodic sense even if a band rocks considerably harder). Planetfall is certainly mindful of the trip-out music of the '60s and '70s, but there is enough of an alternative rock influence to make this album relevant to rock's post-Nevermind landscape. In other words, Planetfall is greatly influenced by baby-boomer bands but is far from oblivious to post-boomer bands of the '90s and 2000s — and this disc achieves not only an appealing balance of influences from different eras, but also an appealing balance of musicality and intensity. Planetfall rocks aggressively, but never in a way that is punishing or terribly harsh. In fact, melody is never a mere afterthought for Litmus; it is an integral part of what the British space rockers do on this excellent CD. (Alex Henderson, All Music Guide)

Exile on Mainstream Records Welcomes The Antikaroshi

From Exile on Mainstream Records:

We are happy to announce the signing of Potsdam`s finest, The AntiKaroshi!

We have been touched by their sounds for a while but after their performance on this year`s South Of Mainstream Festival we just couldn`t resist and offer them a deal! WE ARE STOKED! Not only are they super nice people who have been active in the business for a while with organizing shows and helping bands out, they are also a bands who deliver a completely unique sound, driven by a deep emotional approach: a band that is honest in behavior and performance.

Their upcoming debut album is recorded already, named Crushed Neocons, and will be released by the end of January 2009! Watch out for more news soon.

Armed for Apocalypse Readies New EP

From Armed for Apocalypse:

We just started getting the mixes back for our new EP, which we haven`t named yet, and they sound immense. We recorded it with Matt Pedri, who is a former band member and long time best friend. He`s also done stuff with the Iron Sloth and is currently doing the new Death Valley High record, which is amazing by the way. It`s being mixed by Eric Stenman, who has been involved in pretty much everything I have done in music, and for good reason - he is awesome. The song is called "Fists of Gods" and it marks the debut of our new vocalist/guitar player Kirk Williams, and our new bass player, Cor Vaspra. They have been playing with us for a while, but this is the first recorded material with them on it, and by far our best.

The bad news is that this also marks the debut of our new myspace site, www.myspace.com/armedforapocalypsesludge, because our last one got hacked. Our entire network of contacts is lost, and we are totally opposed to searching out random people and adding them, so it has been a big blow. It took a long time to build up to where we were. But oh well, I`m sure it`s a blessing in disguise or something. Anyway, hope you like the new tune, there are several more to come, and a new label as well.

New Band To Burn One To-Lords Of Bastard

Here is a great new band for you guys to check out. They are call Lords Of Bastard and hail from Scotland. Below is a review of the the album as well as a few other links. If you like what you hear make sure to visit their MySpace page to purchase their merchandise.

Review:

"Some people just know how to say the right things and this trio of Edinburgh bams got two stars for the top name and the sticker on the CD case alone declaring ‘ … if you like albums, then this might be for you …’ Maybe ‘if you like The Melvins, The Stupids and Thin Lizzy…’ might have been more truthful but perhaps not as genial and inclusive.

But quality packaging aside, Lords of Bastard’s unholy rumble is equal parts bludgeon and groove, swollen riffs swaying like a hairy mammoth’s enormous scrotal sack. They allow their guitars to twist, turn, build without too much extraneous and potentially off-putting vocal gymnastics and crunch through a debut set that is brutal, silly and deeply satisfying, often in the same song. This might seem two-dimensional by some people’s dim standards, and the production is deliberately primitive but that’s sort of the point, no? A heraldic success." (Mark Robertsion, The List)

Album Of The Day-Ten East-"Extraterrestrial Highway" (2006)

The Album Of The Day is "Extraterrestrial Highway" by Ten East.

Review:

More excellent instrumental/post-psych/post-rock/post-stoner /post-surf guitar-based rock. And it's good stuff!

"Ten East's debut, Extraterrestrial Highway, was originally released in 2006 on Alone Records and is now available exclusively on Lexicon Devil. In terms of mining the pipeline of instrumental, multi-layered, psychedelic desert-rock with a heavy-assed backbeat, Ten East has the supergroup line-up to die for. On this record, Ten East are: Gary Arce (Yawning Man, Fatso Jetson, Sort Of Quartet), Mario Lalli (Fatso Jetson, Yawning Man), Brant Bjork (Kyuss) and Bill Stinson (HOR, Greg Ginn). Their sound is caught somewhere between jazz-like improvisation and rock-solid riffery. Taking inspiration from punk, blues, psychedelia, surf and jazz, the band's sound ably demonstrates creeping influences from such artists as SST standard-bearers Black Flag, Meat Puppets and the Minutemen, as well as The Ventures, Captain Beefheart, Brian Eno, ZZ Top and the improvisations of Monk and Dolphy. In the band's most current line-up, Bjork has left the band, and none other than Greg Ginn himself has replaced him on bass. This is not merely stoner rock, this is a slab of instrumental fury which will blow brain cells. For fans of: Black Flag, Kyuss, King Crimson, Meat Puppets, The Ventures and Hawkwind." TROUBLE To Resume Writing New Album This Week

Legendary Chicago doomsters TROUBLE announced at last night's (Sunday, September 21) concert at the Bottom Lounge in the band's hometown that they will resume work on writing a new record sometime this week.

In a recent interview with Rock N Roll Experience, TROUBLE guitarist Rick Wartell was asked the group was planning to record a new TROUBLE CD with its new frontman Kory Clarke of WARRIOR SOUL singing. "Yes," Rick replied. "We started writing and we've got eight or nine songs written and we're going to begin recording as soon as we get home from this East Coast leg and we are going to start piecing it together, so, YES!"

Regarding the new music's direction, Rick said, "I know people have said this a million times and I know you've heard this a million times, but it's pretty fucking heavy, let's put it that way! The music end of it that Bruce [Franklin, guitar] and I are writing is getting heavier and heavier...it's getting heavier and then we want Kory to incorporate his style to what we are doing, that's basically all that we really want out of this."

Speaking to Viewmag, guitarist Bruce Franklin of stated about Clarke's inaugural tour of duty with TROUBLE, "We had sent him some MP3s and he had the chance to listen to some stuff but it is not the same until you are playing with the band. We only had a couple of rehearsals before the tour started and the first few shows were a little rough. By the fourth show it was getting pretty good and from there on it just got better. We couldn't expect him to learn twenty songs at once, so we picked the most popular songs. We were hoping to do more early songs but Kory was latching on to the early Nineties stuff because it has the most hooks and is the catchiest material. It's probably easier for him to remember those. We did a setlist that was heavier in that era and finally managed to get one or two old ones in by the end of the tour."

EARLY MAN: New EP Details Revealed

EARLY MAN returns next month with "Beware The Circling Fin", the band's first release since 2005's "Closing In". The group's The End Records debut was mixed with the help of legendary producer Jack Endino and will be available October 14.

The EP's title track was inspired by Paul Watson and his organization, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Sea Shepherd activists endorse a deliberate policy of sinking or sabotaging vessels they believe have violated international whaling laws. Sea Shepherd members are known to call themselves "eco-pirates."

EARLY MAN frontman Mike Conte explains his fascination with Watson and Sea Shepherd: "It was brought to my attention [that] Paul Watson was regularly engaged in campaigns, often in the deep sea, where he was taking direct action against illegal whaling/shark finning/seal clubbing, etc. What stood out to me was that he was sometimes going as far as ramming illegal whaling/fishing vessels, occasionally even sinking them.

"This isn't some passive hippy fuck with a 'save the whales' bumper sticker on his Volkswagen or some naive college kid with a clipboard trying to sign people up for a pointless march or walkathon or some bullshit. This guy was like 'I'm going to raise money to buy a boat and then go out into the ocean and try to stop this insanity WHILE it's happening'. That is some ballsy shit! And something that no one else is doing. I immediately respected that and wanted to support it in any way I could."

The EP's title track, "Beware The Circling Fin", was inspired by the act of 'shark finning'. Conte explains: "I am particularly disturbed by shark finning. If you've never seen the process, it's absolutely horrifying. Sharks are amazing, extremely unique creatures that command a certain amount of respect. Most people are scared of them because we are well aware of their awesome power. But when you see a deep sea fishing boat engaged in something called 'longlining' or to put it more bluntly, reeling in hundreds of sharks, slicing their fins off on deck while they are completely conscious of the what is happening to them and then tossing their mutilated torsos back into the ocean where they sink to the bottom, you can easily lose all faith in humanity.

"'Beware The Circling Fin' is about a shark finning boat that is rammed and begins to sink in waters heavily infested by sharks. The crew finds themselves in the precarious position of being surrounded by thousands of the same beasts that they were just moments ago murdering by the hundreds. As they rapidly sink into the ocean the crew is eaten alive. Payback is a bitch, isn't it?"

Album Of The Day-Blood Ceremony-"Self-Titled" (2008)

The Album Of The Day is the new self-titled release by Blood Ceremony.

Review:

"Sure, there are a mess of bands out there that are brilliantly effective at channeling the '70's, but not that many have had as strong an impact as Sweden's Witchcraft. Their debut did more than just ape vintage Pentagram – it sounded like it was actually recorded at the start of that decade and was a long lost gem from another era.

For better or worse, numerous like-minded bands have spawned in their wake. The latest is Canada's Blood Ceremony, who goes so far as to label its music as “witch rock.” Sure, the band probably means they're occult influenced, but given the vintage feel of Blood Ceremony and Witchcraft's catalog, it's hard not to draw comparisons.

And yet while Blood Ceremony does share some of the same Pentagram- and Roky Erikson -isms, they're strong enough to be taken on their own (provided you aren't familiar with Jex Thoth, that is). Blood Ceremony, as it's been said on this website, sounds like Jethro Tull had Tony Iommi joined the band back in 1968 - bluesy doom accented by flute and with a generous amount of folksy psychedelics. What also sets Blood Ceremony apart from their retro-minded contemporaries are the vocals, courtesy of Alia O'Brien (who's also the flutist). She brings a faint Jefferson Airplane vibe, which heightens the Wyrd Folk aspect of the album. The songs are fairly consistent throughout, but it's the last track, “Hymn to Pan,” where the band really shines.

Overall, I found this to be an impressive debut. It's not particularly heavy – not surprising, given that their focused exclusively on the late 60s/early 70s – and their fascination with “The Black Arts” may seem silly and trite to some, but it is an effectively atmospheric album." (John Pegoraro, StonerRock.com)

01. Master Of Confusion
02. I'm Coming With You
03. Into The Coven
04. A Wine Of Wizardry

Savannah, Georgia-based quartet BARONESS has parted ways with guitarist Brian Blickle and has replaced him with Peter Adams of VALKYRIE.

Commented drummer Allen Blickle: "[Peter] is a longtime friend of the band and we are very excited to have him on our side. Peter is quite the talent. An all-around great musician.

As a band member and brother, I will dearly miss having him on tour."

NACHTMYSTIUM Drops Off OPETH Tour

Chicago-area psychedelic black metal group NACHTMYSTIUM has dropped off the North American tour featuring OPETH and HIGH ON FIRE.

Commented NACHTMYSTIUM in a statement: "Due to some issues beyond our control, we've been forced to pull off the OPETH/HIGH ON FIRE tour. We're aggressively working to try to get things together for the second leg of our fall tour starting in Los Angeles on October 8th with WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM.

"We apologize to anyone who was hoping to see us on the OPETH leg of the tour.

"Thanks to all of those who came out in support at the shows that we did manage to play, it was great seeing you maniacs out!"

NACHTMYSTIUM's latest full-length album, "Assassins: Black Meddle Part I", was released on June 10 via Century Media Records in North America and June 23 through Candlelight Records in Europe.

"Worldfall", the new mini-CD from NACHTMYSTIUM, was released as a precursor to the band's upcoming full-length, and is only be available direct from Century Media as well as iTunes.

The "Assassins..." full-length was recorded in December at Sanford Parker's Volume Studios (RWAKE, MINSK, LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR, PELICAN) and showcases NACHTMYSTIUM's most prolific and expansive sounds to date. Album Of The Day-Spiritu-"Self-Titled" (2002)

The Album Of The Day is the 2002 self-titled release by Spiritu.

Review:

One thing you need to know as you approach Spiritu's eponymous debut: expect the unexpected. On the surface, the New Mexico foursome appear to be just another stoner rock band, and yet their music boldly faces the risk of generic pigeonholing, and counters it with the most obvious and, at the same time, most elusive antidote of all: great songs. Sure, nine-minute opener "Z" may evoke shades of Australian space rock/prog rock weirdos Alchemist; their cover of the old Sir Lord Baltimore nugget "Woman Tamer" may smack of stoner rock supremos Monster Magnet (not least because Monster Magnet recycled the song's distinctive ascending riff elsewhere); "Glorywhore" may stretch its melancholy tendrils into Alice in Chains territory; and the whole thing is, of course, blessed by the spirit of Black Sabbath. But the members of Spiritu manage to integrate these touchstones in such convincing fashion that the resulting, peculiar blend easily stands up on its own terms. They also have an ace in the hole in expressive vocalist Jadd, whose surprising power and range exceed all the usual stoner rock limitations to resemble a less operatic version of Iron Maiden legend Bruce Dickinson -- no kidding! Even more surprising, there are moments on Spiritu where commercial accessibility seems like a perfectly rational proposition, and the deft touch of producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney) can also be clearly heard on standout cuts "Fat Man in Thailand," and the comparatively concise "Clean Livin'." As yet another long but satisfying track, "Slump" brings the album coasting to the finish line; there's much here that suggests a bright future for Spiritu. (Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide)

02. Fat Man In Thailand
03. Glorywhore

Tweak Bird kickoff U.S. tour; includes dates w/Valient Thorr & Black Tusk

TWEAK BIRD BEGIN U.S. TOUR; INCLUDES DATES WITH VALIENT THORR AND BLACK TUSK

The Los Angeles by-the-way of Carbondale, IL sibling duo, TWEAK BIRD, begin their first U.S. tour that will include dates with Valient Thorr and Atlanta, GA’s Black Tusk.

TWEAK BIRD’s debut release (out last week), Reservations, is a sweeping seven song introduction to a band exploring the depths of heavy experimental, progressive and psych-infused rock. Produced under the helm of the impressive production team, Deaf Nephews (Melvins’ Dale Crover and Altamont's Toshi Kasai), the songs on Reservations emanate a powerful brooding air—foreboding, almost threateningly so—of some new sonic assault about to be heaved upon the listener.

Mark Willett (Listen.com, Music for Robots) calls Tweak Bird “one of the best local bands in Los Angeles right now” and “their two man attack with baritone guitar and drums is just an aural slaughter”, while Iann Robinson (None Louder) says Reservations “is one of the best slices of rock I’ve heard in a long time” and “is the musical equivalent of the weed smoke that filters out of your older brothers room. It’s thick, potent and once you get a bit you want so much more.”.

Heading up the West Coast and then across the nation to meet Valient Thorr and Black Tusk in Virginia, TWEAK BIRD are set unleash their “fuzzed out melodic low end riffs spliced with Geddy Lee singing during the peak of a welcome acid trip” (Crust Cake) on all that are willing to join them on their trip.

Album Of The Day-Telestrion-Self-Titled" (2007)

Sorry the Album Of The Day is a little late today. Regardless, Telestrion's self-titled 2007 album is the Album Of The Day. Enjoy!

By the way, I may or may not have time to post tomorrow. I have a full slate of stuff to do. Have a great weekend, I know I will.

Review:

“Open the door to your mind and take a ride with Telestrion. Let their brand of heavy cosmic rock and roll take you on a journey to the deepest reaches of inner and outer space, singing a tune, clapping your hands and stomping your feet the whole way.” - Stonerrock.com

Telestrion is a four-piece heavy psychedelic rock band whose sound is a fusion of timeless riff-rock masters such as BLACK SABBATH, LED ZEPPELIN, and CREAM combined with modern freak out sensibilities of groups like FU MANCHU with a bit of the weird, synth, excessive phase/flanger/delay sounds of bands like THE FLAMING LIPS. Telestrion’s self-titled debut was recorded over two weeks in Kennesaw, GA under the direction of sound mixers Don Tart (Cee-Lo and Jackyl) and Jeff Tomei (Smashing Pumpkins, Jerry Cantrell). The band formed over the course of the summer of 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia. Andy Samford (guitar, vocals), Brian Holcomb (guitar, vocals, thermin), and John Smith (bass) played together in the now defunct Qualone and found steady rhythmic grounding with the additions of Chris Stewart on drums.

The album cover gives new meaning to “The Hills Have Eyes” just look and you can tell that Telestrion is going to have a real natural feel to their music with some psychedelic flare thrown in the mix. They combine the intensity of skate rock and classic rock riffs with a Ozzy-like vocals. The instrumental part of Telestrion is more like a cross between Pink Floyd, Journey and AC/DC if you can imagine that. But this acid rock band best describes their own music as, “The weird sounds you hear in the void between waking and sleeping.” That is exactly what their sound is. There is no one genre that encompasses all the Telestrion’s style they sample from many different genres to come up with a sound that is completely their own. Their heart-felt jams and obviously impassioned approach to their songwriting and recording equate to an album that’s at once tranquil and frenzied. For example, lyrics in one of the songs include, “I hear colors with my eyes and feel them in my brain all senses are one in the same.” It’s lyrics like that, that make Telestrion the perfect album to put in and have deep conversations with your friends. Telestrion combine the best of both worlds with the musical exploration of a jam band and the enthusiasm of a heavy metal and psych-rock. This is the kind of album that you’ll want to bring with you over a weekend under the influence of some wine and psychoactive substances. So, next time you plan a weekend in the woods of Vermont; don’t forget the Telestrion. (Neufutur Magazine)

Album Of The Day-Raise The Red Lantern-"Breathe Fire" (2006)

The Album Of The day is "Breathe Fire" by Raise The Red Lantern.

Review:

The film Raise the Red Lantern, is set in 1920s feudal China, decades before the Chinese Civil War. Nineteen-year-old Songlian (Gong Li), whose father has recently died and left the family bankrupt, marries into the wealthy Chen family, becoming the fourth wife—or, as she is referred to, the Fourth Mistress—of the household.

That should clear some things up. I am not in fact reviewing the latest sludge/tech/core band out of whatever part of the hinterland Raise The Red Lantern are out of, but in fact Zhang Yimou's Oscar-nominated 1991 epic. Well, no. I'm not, it's a coincidence, I guess, but it does make it hard to Google these guys. I will confess that I am a sucker for this sort of thing; I don't know if it has a name yet, but you know what I mean. A metalcore alike to Rwake at times, mixing the tonalities and production of sludge with the speed and melodic sensibilities of your early Mastodons, your Keelhauls, and fuck, let's toss in the vocal style and general aesthetic of your Neurosis', your Isis'. That's a lot of references, and whether they're appropriate or not, it might be said that this is not the most original of music, that is, I get the feeling that now is the time that there is a lot of this particular kind of music coming out. But lucky for Raise the Red Lantern, and more importantly, lucky for me, because I really like this kind of music.

More to the point, however, is that Raise the Red Lantern are not going to be anybody's idea of a trend-hopping, cookie-cutter band and believe me, I was there for the Great Melodic Metalcore Plague of 2004; I know whence I speak. As much as their sound might suggest or be suggested by the sounds of others, Breathe Fire is a satisfying and propulsive experience; the band is great at crafting a single, unified narrative out of the songs and riffs on the record, and it's a narrative that consistently entertains. Like I said, I'm a sucker for it; the catchy and heavy-ass riffs and the leads, delicately melodic at times but always very tastefully distorted. It's just a good thing then that aside from being the kind of music I like, it's also good music.

There are times when the band wanders; one of the pitfalls of having a consistent and recognizable (you will notice I didn't say "definable", for my piss-poor efforts above) sound is that it's possible to spend some time working within the strictures of the format without actually doing anything. So there are times, in particular during the last section of the record, when the listener's attention wanders.

Even when they're not at their most inspired, however, Raise the Red Lantern put on a helluva show. For every note that maybe doesn't need to be here—and one or two slightly embarrassing incidences of clean singing—they'll still rock your face off.

Beware the Night Horse

Tradition lies deep in the music of Los Angeles rock and roll group Night Horse, which features members of dirge soundscapists Ancestors and the vocal styling of Sam James Velde, formerly of explorative and adventurous rockers Bluebird. Night Horse bring a saddle bag full of heavy, raw and riffed-out blues-tinged rock steeped in the likes of John Lee Hooker, Taste, Peter Green`s Fleetwood Mac, and The Allman Brothers Band without a retro stitch. Night Horse rein in the past with a firm heel in the present, galloping next to such like-minded contemporaries as Harvey Milk, Down, and Priestess. Delivering heavy testimonials harnessed with a twin lead guitar assault, Night Horse join hands with these brothers in arms.

Night Horse began in late January 2008. Their early rumblings could be heard through the moniker "The Mother Fucking Razorbacks," a name that Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead coined after meeting them in front of Hollywood`s esteemed landmark, the Hustler store. The band had come together to feed their collective hunger to play straight forward rock n roll music. Night Horse, who were actively seeking out the perfect front man found just that in Sam James Velde. After having disbanded Bluebird and spent the past few years developing his eclectic record label Cold Sweat Records, Sam was eager to rejoin the ranks of the rock n rollers. The meeting was set and the collective love for all things `rock n roll` was channeled. The five-piece bonded over a common love of bands like the Alice Cooper Group, early Aerosmith, Van Halen, Sir Lord Baltimore, and ZZ Top.

Night Horse debuts six sonic hymns this fall under the title The Dark Won`t Hide You on North Atlantic Sound/Tee Pee Records. Look for them on tour and in a record store near you in October 2008.

For more well-known references think Fu Manchu meets Alabama Thunderpussy meets Clutch." (El Danno, StonerRock.com)

INTRONAUT: 'Australopithecus' Video Preview Available

The wait is finally over as progressive titans INTRONAUT unveil their new album, "Prehistoricisms", to the masses today.

"Prehistoricisms" was engineered by Josh Newell (JANE'S ADDICTION) and will captivate the metal world with its blend of psychedelic brutality, captivating hooks and unpredictable time changes.

An abstract, eye-popping new video for the track "Australopithecus" was directed by Sera Timms (ISIS, PELICAN). A short preview of the clip can be viewed below. Look for the full video to make its online debut sometime next month. Sacha Dunable (vocals, guitar) commented, "We were kind of concerned that a video would come across as cheesy or forced, but Sera made a really elaborate storyline to go along with the very vague lyrical content (quite a feat) and just made this amazing video that we can totally be proud of. We can't wait for [everyone] to see it."

A widget for "Prehistoricisms" is now available (see below) which features two tracks from the album, "Australopithecus" and "The Literal Black Cloud".
