Song of the Day-Sergeant Thunderhoof-"When Time Stood Still"

"When Time Stood Still" is taken off of the upcoming release "Ride of the Hoof" due out November 5, 2015. Boom! Shot out of a kaleidscope cannon, this colorful and vibrant display of epic groove metal  captivates with it's swirling psychedelia, soaring vocals and sonic crunch. Song of the Day-Iron Void-"Lost Faith"

"Lost Faith" is taken off of the upcoming full-length "Doomsday" due out October 5, 2015 on Doomanoid Records. Amazing new album from Iron Void is set to be released and this guy couldn't be happier. Combining NWOBHM elements and a raw approach this band channels their riff-worshipping spirit to create a very straightforward and classic doom metal record. Song of the Day-Thunderchief-"Bad Man"

"Bad Man" is taken off of the band's self-titled 4-song EP. This is music that (in my case, a rainy Monday morning) gets your ass up and moving. This groove-laden, heavy blues number feeds off a hard-hitting riff with raw and pure energetic intensity. I'm willing to bet these guys put on one hell of a live show. Song of the Day-Ponamero Sundown-"Bottom of the River"

"Bottom of the River" is taken off the latest release "Veddesta". It has been four long years since the band's last release "Rodeo Eléctrica (review)" and the band has not lost a step. In all honesty, I believe the band has gotten better. This song is a fine example of how the band crafts the perfect stoner rock song. To kick things off, bang the hell out of a cowbell. Next, enter a monster riff and finally, ride that groove for 4-plus minutes. If that isn't enough, the song ends with a glorious twin-guitar killing right into another huge riff. Take that! Song of the Day-Deville-"Life in Decay"

"Life in Decay" is the first single taken off of the upcoming release "Make It Belong to Us" due out November 13, 2015 on Fuzzorama Records. The band is more determined than ever, and they prove it on this track filled with soaring vocals, off-the-rails energy and one hell of a killer riff.  For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Website

Song of the Day-InTechnicolour-"Lend Me a Crushed Ear"

"Lend Me a Crushed Ear" is taken off of the 3-song EP of the same name coming out soon on Small Pond Recordings. Rising out of the tech/math metal scene is a new band featuring members of Delta Sleep and the Physics House Band. I found that for a relatively unknown band, the band was drawing interest from Decibel Magazine which premiered the song a few days ago. This song elaborates on the former and adds in a more progressive stoner element with crushing riffs, soaring vocal harmonies and ear-grabbing melody. Song of the Day-RUKH-"Gloomy Charm"

"Gloomy Charm" is taken off of the recently released full-length "Tickets For a Second Round"by Russian band RUKH. This song has a dark and superbly mysterious aura surrounding it. It feels more gloomy, hence the title, and less doomy. I'm feeling a bit of a Beth Gibbons from Portishead vibe in the vocals. Rapturous, sultry and haunting with a hint of psychedelia lurking in the background. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

LP Review: Death is the Mother of Beauty by DoOom

Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes! Almost a year since Barrytown, New York, instrumental doomsters DoOom released their Pure EP with much aplomb, the heavy grave dwellers are back with their full-length Death is the Mother of Beauty, and it’s a record that meets every expectation you will have from an instrumental fuzzy doom stoner drone band (yes, that good).

The album opens with deathly fuzzy feedback style demonic riffs, like all good doom bands do, with the concrete-style heavy ‘Greate Ape’ with even heavier undercurrents of stoner riffs seismically destroying the idea that the song was going down a deep droned-out path, but instead becomes a heavy song to almost thrash to. The beauty of DoOom is that they don’t necessarily fit to the “rules” of the doom genre, instead giving it a necessary kick up its gloomy arse when it’s needed.

Like many bands in the instrumental genre, the tight line between excellent and boring is tread without much other choice, but what stands the good out from the not so, is the band’s song structures, the layers they add to each track, either standing each out as a standalone song, or as a piece of a collective journey within the album. The poorer instrumentalists stand out a mile away, DoOom however fall into the first category, and make you question why there is a need for vocals in the first place. A track such as ‘Nothing Above, Nothing Below’ perfectly epitomises the band’s abilities, a deep fuzz riff smothers the top of the doom-onic underbelly that drives the band, at first screaming at you, before gently settling back to tell its story, before building once again to an apocalyptic conclusion of a psychedelic guitar soloing amongst a tsunami of riffs.

DoOom manage to make each track not only sound like the end of the world, but they make the occasion into a really good thing. Death is the Mother of Beauty is a fantastic record which fits into every genre you love about heavy music, it will satisfy lovers of the riff, fans of doom, and provide a gateway to introduce new people to what the genre has to offer, it’s really that good!

LP Review: Luminous Bodies by Luminous Bodies

It’s likely that a lot of attention for this band will immediately focus around the fact that they use two drummers in their noise racketeering assault on the senses, but there is so much more to Luminous Bodies, and indeed this record, than what some will see as being “different”. For a start, there’s their superb song structures and sound, which is basically a bit like The Melvins, if they didn’t dick around so much and wrote quality song after song. Luminous Bodies echo The Melvin’s chaotic instrumentation and unnerving ability to keep you on the edge of your seat, but when you’re engrossed in a song such as ‘Man’s Milk’ or ‘Stay Dead’ you’re powerless to the riffs, noise, and aggression, unable and unwilling to let go.

The vocals of Gordon Watson range from slow 80’s style doom to psychotic shouting, and they really entrap each song within his control, driving each distorted riff, deathly cymbal crash, and slow menacing head bang. This is expressed no better in their cover of Tom Jones’ classic ‘She’s a Lady’ on their track ‘Lady Graveyard’, and it works quite spectacularly.

The one thing that strikes you hardest about the London five piece is that these guys are the real deal; each psychedelic tangent they lead you down (‘Stay Dead’), each experimental noise feedback they piss all over(‘You Cheap-Arse Motherfucker’), every fuzz-heavy riff (‘Inhaler’), and for every doom-laden spiritual journey (‘Om Naman Shivaya’) that they ooze out of the speakers with energy and excitement is a sheer joy to behold.

Luminous Bodies is released through Box Records, and is a must for fans of music.

Song of the Day-88 Mile Trip-"I'm Not Mad (I'm Just Disappointed)"

"I'm Not Mad (I'm Just Disappointed)" is taken off of the band's latest release "Through the Thickest Haze". Roll up your sleeves to get down and dirty with this hard-driving Stoner Metal slab oozing with fuzzy tones, chunky riffs and high-octane energy. As the band states, "Play This LOUD!" Song of the Day-Hyne-"Keep it Low"

"Keep it Low" is taken off of the upcoming full-length "MMXV" set to release on October 16, 2015. Pre-orders are now being taken through the band's Bandcamp page. With a spell-binding groove and slick and shiny riff, this tune's radio-friendly melody and hook gets stuck in your head prompting you to hit the repeat button over and over. Song of the Day-Menhir-"Hiding in Light"

"Hiding in Light" is part of the 'Hiding in Light' EP that is being released later this year via Tartarus Records. I am pretty sure that the description of the band needs a little updating as this is far from Southern and Stoner Rock. This song fires up the afterburner on a rampaging galactic bulldozer thrusting full-force to level the moon leaving a trail of spacey atmospheric sludge in it's wake. Featuring 2 bass players and 1 drummer, the band has created a monstrous and primordial sound. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

New Band To Burn One To: Shine

Shine are a heavy stoner doom trio from Bielsko-Biała, Poland, and when we say heavy, we mean HEAVY! They have recently released their Weednight EP, there songs of deafening fuzzed out stoner riffs, all entwined with thick layers of doomy overtones, all the while taking you down a psychedelic corridor as the songs stretch out their deaths each time.

The songs show the band members (Kamil Baran – guitar & vocals, Damian Olearczyk – bass & vocals, and Marcel Łękawa – drums) to be excellent musicians with dominant bass tones striving through the self-titled track, the drums carrying hefty control of the background, the guitar weaves intricate guitar drones into every psychedelic stoners dreams, and the vocals have enough alien distortion to allow it to flow in their astral plain, but all the while drawing you in to it’s grasp.

Shine are proving to be a massive force to be reckoned with. We recommend you allow Weednight to completely absolve you.

Song of the Day-Birnam Wood-"Wizards Bleed"

"Wizards Bleed" is taken off of the latest EP "Warlord". With it's iconic build-up, the song eventually delves into a heavy and groovy vibe. A bit psychedelic, a bit terrifying and a whole lot of mother fuckin' riffage! No disappointment here. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Song of the Day-Behold! The Monolith-"Philosopher's Blade"

"Philosopher's Blade" is taken off of the upcoming release "Architects of the Void" due out September 29,2015 digitally and sometime in November/December 2015 on vinyl. Pre-orders are now being taken for both editions on Bandcamp. The song starts off with a tribal drum beat and then explodes into a skull-grinding doomy riff. Once the beyond evil vocal enters that is when all insanity ensues, blatantly deafening your aural cavity and thrashing the shit out of your numbing bones. LP Review: 'Terminal' by Limb

If you're not into bands that leave you feeling like you've been elbowed in the face with a barrage of heavy riffage, then look away now... Coz that's Limb's special move and they'll get you every time, over and over again.

Born and bred in London, Limb are like the bastard son of Clutch and Electric Wizard with a cockney swagger through a Louisiana swamp, which when combined makes their sound their own. It’s hard to pin down the four-piece as purely purveyors of sludge, as there's more going on with their latest long-player 'Terminal'. And it's goooood.

An almost perfect concoction of groove-infused heavy sludge rock, 'Terminal’ sounds like a big step forward in the band’s evolution, and evidence they have picked up a few tricks from previous tour buddies Black Moth. Also evident is the influence of producer Russ Russell, known for his extreme metal work with Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, Evile etc. Through Russell’s knob-tinkering and ear for production, you get a real sense of how BIG the band would sound live... and Limb have never sounded better.

There’s very little respite to the pounding maelstrom of riffs and guttural growls of vocalist Rob Hoey throughout the record - the perfect soundtrack to sinking a beer or ten, cranking up the stereo to ear-splitting volume, and throwing a house party till the police show up. Stand-out tracks here include ‘Dawn Raiders’ a straight-up shot of pure stoner groove with a menacing bluesy bass riff, ‘Micromegas’ a fist-pumping anthemic stomp, and ‘Cocytus’ which concludes the record with an 9 min epic 3-part track of hypnotic and relentless rhythms.

It’s obvious Limb take their craft seriously, evident with both the lyrics and awesome artwork by Cur3es (you may be familiar with his art on Fu Manchu’s ‘Gigantoid’), portraying a dystopian near-future and the response of humanity. Worthy of owning the limited vinyl version on its own.

With ‘Terminal’, Limb have upped their game, defined their sound and delivered some cracking tracks in the process. With any luck they’ll continue to do so, though you get the feeling these guys make their own luck.

Quick Hit From Ambassador

"As soon as track one "Astado Natural" starts to play an instant haze of smoke fills the room. My immediate thought from the first note was Blue Cheer, but as the song continued on things became fuzzier and fuzzier. The band doesn't wander very far from the heavy, and I mean heavy blues, although the sinister riff on "El Siniestro" hits some pretty evil doom territory. The band hails from Argentina, so the lyrics are primarily barked in the band's native language, regardless of the language barrier the band tears it up track after track on this damn fine demo. Take a Hit and pass this along!

Song of the Day-Monobrow-"Dyatlov Station 3 (Unrehearsed Jam)"

"Dyatlov Station 3 (Unrehearsed Jam)" is one of two new tracks hot off the presses by Canadian Stoner Metal all-instrumental band extraordinaire Monobrow. It is easy to see why this band is one of my favorites. This track is the band in their rawest form and the music flows without any imperfections. Solid moving bass lines, shredding guitars and rapid off-kilter drum beats show why this band is so stellar. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp
