QUICK HIT: Cloud - "Indeterminate"

Cloud have been around for a short minute, releasing their first EP on bandcamp back in 2015. "Indeterminate" is their second release. It's savory. It's toothsome. It's intoxicating. I very much hope this Pittsburgh trio thrive and continue to manufacture psychedelic stoner/doom riffage just as they have done here and extend that minute into legend and legacy.

The perception sometimes is that instrumental music has to work that extra bit at developing enough creativity to engage and entertain those who experience their music due to the absence of vocals, and the structure vocals tend to supply in stanza and chorus. If that's the case, then mission accomplished, Cloud. There is no ramp up period on any track as each song manages to immediately connect to an atmosphere of intrigue and a depth of discovery. They do this by expertly and eloquently wielding their instruments of stoner brilliance, cranking up the fuzz factor in addictive riffs of low-tuned ecstasy and psychedelic progressivism.

Cloud have added a cunning deviation in the middle of the song selections by inserting the provocative song "Desert Weed" in which they've recruited the vocal inspiration of Mephistofeles' Gabriel Ravera, whose style, at least on this particular rendition, is a magnificent homage to the metal legend of Ozzy Osbourne.

Album Review: Frozen Planet….1969 - Electric Smokehouse

The new album Electric Smokehouse from Sydney, Australia's own Frozen Planet….1969 is fully instrumental, completely improvised and full on intergalactic.  Seriously, like nothing I have ever experienced before outside of a certain psychotropic.  Just an insane carnival ride through multiple dimensions that you don't want to end or you do want it to end or your not sure if it is ever going to end and you are going to be stuck like this forever.  One way or the other your life will never be what it was when it's done.   

The band is comprised of Paul Attard tripping out on guitar, Lachlan Paine bringing the heavy low end fuzz on bass and Frank Attard pulling it all together on drums.  Their songwriting style is to not write songs, why bother?  They just jam.  Man, they fucking jam.   

I just listened to the album for the third time in a row and am sitting here in silence.  Heart palpitating, a little short of breath and not sure what to do next.  There is nothing to follow this album up with except maybe a cigarette and some quiet time.  I feel exhilarated and exhausted at the same time. 

Electric Smokehouse will be released on January 11th through Pepper Shaker Records.  Of course there will also be vinyl (in black or transparent purple).  

You have to check this one out, you just may look at life a little bit differently after you do.

New Band To Burn One To: Low Sun

Now this is interesting.

Low Sun are an instrumental stoner/psychedelic band from London, UK, who also mix in some darker ambient vibes with a post-rock feel, before exploding into the stoner riffs we all adore so much. Their two-track demo, Prologue, dares to expand the corners of what constitutes stoner rock and psychedelia with courage and a musical talent which speaks for itself; ‘Novice Swordfighter’ straddles an Earthless feel with some powerful riffs, while the fuzz riffs of ‘The Monster Storm’ eagerly lay waste to what’s before you. An excellent release!

Readers of this blog will love what these guys are doing. Check out their stuff before their debut full-length inevitably blows your mind.

Brief Bio/Description: Viridiana starts 1 year ago, are an instrumental duo guitar and drums, from beginning trying to do some different.

Trying be raw and primitive. Members come from Unojo and Weed bug both bands of Vigo too. Viridiana published his first ep in February of this year with the name " Eram qoud es eris quod sum ", the ep appear in one track with five themes all recorded in a rehearsal , in cabral studios.

New Band To Burn One To: Oarfish

Crushing riffs are in abundance on the debut EP from Swedish multi-instrumentalist Mattias Häggström Gerdt, going under the name Oarfish. HE has just released five instrumental sludge/doom/metal tracks to really crew with your senses. While at times drifting into post-rock territory, the music quickly coats over in a foggy choking gas ball of thick grungy riffs and penetrating time changes that keep you on the uneasy edge of your seat the whole time.

Give yourself over to the power of Oarfish for an uncomfortably heavy half an hour. You won’t regret it.

Song of the Day-Captives of the Void - "Ring Around the Sun"

"Ring Around the Sun" is a bit of a teaser track as what is yet to come from what is apparently a two-man band from Yorkshire, UK. I woke up this morning, opened my e-mail and clicked play on the video. What I heard next was a great all-instrumental track of delicious stoner rock groove.
