The "New Band To Burn One To" today is Oak Is Keeping from Austin, Texas.

(Photo: David Smith / Design: Shay Isdale)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oak is Keeping is the outcome of mixing heavy, guttural guitars with astral harmonies and brash lyrical content, about everything from love to the human condition. This mixture produces a rock and roll sound that has been compared to the likes of other Texas rock establishments, Toadies, …Trail of Dead and The Sword. Oak is Keeping have been playing around Texas and its surrounding states for over a year while Shay, Mastin, Zac and Adam wrote and recorded songs for their 2009 album, Animal Style! The band’s debut album is full of double guitar attacks, driving beats, haunting melodies and powerful bass lines.

OiK has been featured on Local Licks on 93.7 KLBJ-FM, appeared on the 101X morning show w/ Jason & Deb, been the featured artist of Austin INsite Magazine and the subject of many blogs and reviews. This is what people are saying about Oak is Keeping....

"This is retro pop-rock bliss....."
"Wild composition w/some hellacious playing--neat vocals, lyrics...You do your own thing and you do it very well. Awesome!"

"Oak is Keeping is like Cream conducting the marriage between Spoon and Queens of the Stone Age."
-Michal Durham (The Daily Texan)

"One local band, Oak is Keeping, is carrying the torch for what some would now call radio rock. Their mix of modern rock hallmarks along with classic rock and blues influences sounds fresh and would be at home on stations such as 101X and KLBJ."
-Ana Wolken (INsite Magazine)

"I love this, its what you can call heavy. The double guitar attack is great!"
-Loris Lowe (KLBJ-FM / Local Licks)

"Animal Style" (2009) is Oak is Keeping's first full length album. It features updated versions of some songs from the old EPs, as well as plenty of new tracks. The record is full of guitar riffs, explosive drums, fat bass lines, harmonies, and everything that is great about good rock & roll.

KNOXVILLE AC Entertainment is proud to announce Planet Caravan, a two-day music festival celebrating the origins of heavy music at The Orange Peel Social Aid and Pleasure Club in Asheville, North Carolina. Featuring a line-up of some of the best emerging and established rock and metal bands, the debut festival showcases heavy music in many of its various sub-genres and incarnations, from doom and psychedelic to progressive and experimental.

"Planet Caravan is an homage to the pioneers of heavy music," says event creator Charlie Jennings. "The event spotlights bands that carry on the traditional sounds of heavy rock and blues but also push it into new and exciting territories."

This year's festival features Maryland hard rockers Clutch, who released their ninth studio album, Strange Cousins from the West, on July 7. Highly influential, recently reunited doom metal legends Pentagram will appear for a rare performance. Swedish progressive metal band Burst will make its first-ever U.S. appearance at Planet Caravan. Orange Goblin, named "the best underground band in Britain," by Metal Hammer magazine, will make their first appearance in three years and their only U.S. performance in 2009. And, hot off their newest release Static Tensions and a major tour with Mastodon, Georgia band Kylesa will bring their sludgy brand of rock to the Planet Caravan stage.

Other performers include newly reformed doom band YOB, who return to the East Coast for the first time. Doom metal icon Scott Weinrich (of St. Vitus and The Obsessed fame) appears with his new project Wino. Hot new San Diego band Astra will perform tracks from their recent Rise Above/Metal blade release The Weirding. In other firsts, San Francisco's Orchid will make their debut performance outside the Bay Area. Rounding out the bill will be Mike Vallely's Revolution Mother, modern blues rockers Taddy Porter, and Knoxville's own Pick up the Snake.

That the first Planet Caravan is being held at The Orange Peel is a testament to the club's premier status in the rock community. Named one of the top five rock clubs by Rolling Stone in the magazine's "Best of Rock 2008" issue, The Orange Peel is situated in vibrant downtown Asheville, N.C. Since it opened in 2002, The Orange Peel has hosted revered performers including Queens of the Stone Age, King Crimson, Wolfmother, The Flaming Lips, Wilco, Sonic Youth, and 311, as well as special performances by The Beastie Boys, Bob Dylan, Ben Harper, and a nine-night residency with the Smashing Pumpkins.

Asheville, situated in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina with an estimated population of over 70,000, is recognized for its unique Bohemian culture, natural beauty, and lively downtown, often referred to as the "Paris of the South."

Here's the complete line-up:

Clutch
Pentagram
Orange Goblin
Kylesa
Burst
YOB
Wino
Astra
Taddy Porter
Tombs
Bison b.c.
Zoroaster
The Gates of Slumber

BLOOD OF THE TYRANT, LITANY FOR THE WHALE, SAVIOURS

Today, I have a some cool new shit for you guys to check out as well as some news on the Planet Caravan Festival and the ever popular "New Band To Burn One To" feature. Keep it all coming, I will eventually get around to it. Please be patient with me as I do this in my spare time. Also, if your band is featured please show common courtesy and at least provide a thank you. The band LSD & D showed no appreciation, so fuck them. Anyways, on with the show.

Here are a few bands to keep an eye out for in the coming months:

Chicago, IL technical death/doom/progressive outfit BLOOD OF THE TYRANT; a fiercely dedicated and undeniably talented four-piece who've been making quite a name for themselves around the Chicago area, touring mercilessly and sharing stages with the likes of Minsk, Yakuza, Battlefields, Kongh, Lair of the Minotaur, and many more. They've even been honored with their own 'Blood of the Tyrant' Burger at famed heavy metal eatery Kuma's. The band cite influences as diverse as Mastodon, Black Sabbath, Converge, Goblin, Meshuggah, and Neurosis when it comes to their distinctive, eclectic sonic assault, and are sure to appeal to fans across the heavy music spectrum.

Santa Rosa, CA's LITANY FOR THE WHALE are as hard to categorize as their cryptic, vaguely unsettling moniker may suggest. Combining the epic, doomy hardcore of Cursed with the crusty sensibilities of Kylesa, their expansive, noisy sound borrows as much from the Jesus Lizard as it does Battlefields. The band recently completed the recording of their debut album Dolores at Prairie Sun Studios (The Melvins) and features artwork by Chris Taylor (Darkest Hour, Pig Destroyer, Pg 99). Look for the album on CD (and digital) from TBD Records, with the vinyl being handled by MolSook Records and The Perpetual Motion Machine. Litany for the Whale are currently gearing up for a full US tour to promote Dolores, and are aiming for nothing less than total sonic devastation.

"Here is a band to watch. If they’re this strong on their debut EP, in both musicianship and presentation, there’s a very good chance that these guys are going to get big. Judging by this record, that’s a good thing." - Crustcake

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: BROOKLYN HEAVY PSYCH BAND NAAM COMPLETES WORK ON DEBUT ALBUM

I don't usually post news stories but this a cool band that deserves your attention.

Brooklyn, NY heavy psych rock band NAAM has completed work on its debut album. The fast-rising buzz band will drop the self-titled Naam on October 20, 2009 via NYC’s Tee Pee Records.

The follow up to the group’s three-song mega-EP Kingdom, Naam was recorded on an abandoned dairy farm in New York's Catskill Mountains and delivers pitch-dark, utterly hypnotic songs that resurrect the concept of space-rock for a new era. NAAM’s raw, feedback-powered sound pools densely distorted riff-o-rama with throbbing bass lines and echoey, buzzy vocals that seem to hang in the open spaces in between. Calling for comparison to The Stooges, MC5, Can, Loop and Hawkwind, the music of NAAM conjures both post-apocalyptic dazzle and unsettling feeling via punishing, deeply penetrating repetition and twisted vapor trails of guitar. NAAM pounds giant riffs into submission resulting in downered sub-blues melancholia that sounds like the soundtrack to a missing hallucination scene from Easy Rider. NAAM’s high-voltage power and addictive sonance has found favor with both metalheads and psychedelic rock fans alike, all of whom have talked up the group’s thundering musical muscle.

The final track listing for Naam is as follows:

01.) Kingdom
02.) Stone Ton
03.) Skyling Slip
04.) Fever If Fire
05.) Tidal Barrens
06.) Icy Row
07.) Westered Wash
08.) Frosted Tread
09.) Windy Gates
10.) Black Ice

Prior to the release of the album, NAAM will hit the road with Nebula and The Entrance Band and will premiere new material from Naam over the course of its tour trail. A full listing of upcoming NAAM live dates follows this message.

NAAM features Ryan Lugar (guitars, vocals), John Bundy (bass, vocals) and Eli Pizzuto (drums, percussion).

Updated NAAM news and tour information will be made available via the band’s online domains: www.kingdomofnaam.com / www.myspace.com/naamdestroysfaces, and the Tee Pee Records website: www.teepeerecords.com

"very tasty" – DECIBEL

“You see, Black Sabbath might be considered the first heavy metal band, but what they really were was a psychedelic blues outfit. In short, NAAM carry on the legacy of Black Sabbath. The true legacy.” – EVIL SPONGE

"In the case of NAAM, their rather thick, quasi-boogie rock does recall late 60s /early 70s psychedelic rock along the lines of Blue Cheer, but they mess with the songs enough to wriggle out of that straightjacket…this is a ride worth taking" - IMPOSE

“Fantastic...I'd recommend them to fans of Dead Meadow, the Black Angels, Om, Black Mountain, and other rad psychedelic shit.” – CRUSTCAKE

" Brooklyn's NAAM are the latest addition to Tee Pee Records' ever-growing, ever-badass roster. The band can best be described as heavy psychedelic stoner rock (with a few surprises along the way)" – AOL MUSIC’s NOISECREEP

“Blown out psych rock...blissful sub-retro fuzz” – STONER ROCK.com

New Band To Burn One To-LSD & D

Today i have a very cool band for you guys to check out from Portland, Oregon. Mixing part 70's Rock, 80's Hardcore and a little NWOBHM comes LSD & D.

"In the spring of our Lord 2008, 5 young scribes came together to form the unholiest of alliances....... aghast..... A ROCK BAND. Who dare create such a base musical coalition, an obvious affront to civilized society? What heathens would thrust such a powerful, pulsing metallic force on the virtuous indie guzzling community of Portland, Oregon. Did they not know that rock is dead? With Wilco wanna bees on one side, flat out Fall Out Boy, Disney Channel watching losers on the other, and naive emo and screamo posers all in between, how dare they attempt to simply rock. Didn't critics kill their music way back... like in.... 1995? Well these young juggernauts have arisen from the dark ages to create a new hybrid of classics to restore the Kingdom of Rock. They fly from the depths of Hell to the heights of Heaven in an effort to revive the past. Calling back to the days before rock was a joke on an overpriced T-shirt hanging in a thrift shop. They have a call to glory to restore the days when rock was not only a birthright but the lifeblood of the disenfranchised, of the rebellious.

Let us introduce these experienced warlords of sonic splendor, those who have chosen to battle the ancient colonies of royal douche with their various tribes. Beating skins with the force of 1000 men is Private Mike, whose former glories have come with bands the likes of Diamond Tuck. Next in the metal militia is Mark Foehler on battle axe, formerly wreaking havoc with Holy Assassins. On thine other stringed weapon of terror is Billy Glenn, who laid the foundation of rhythm for Stone Juicer. Alex Fast has thumped the low end stronger than a herd of Clydesdale's on his bass with groups such as Deadeye. Lastly, Seantos McDonald's unorthodox singing style has been ransacking rock clubs in the NW for eons with such acts as Starantula."

Album Of the Week-Grey-"Sisters Of The Wyrd" (2008)

All-female doom? You betcha!

"Sisters Of the Wyrd" by Seattle Doom Metal trio Grey is this week's "Album Of the Week".

Easily one of the most anticipated albums in the Doom scene for years! Lots of hard work and time went into the creation of this doomicus epicus masterpiece. All female trio of heavy doom, the way it should be. Mixed by the legendary Billy Anderson and layed down at Jack Endino's Studio (even a guitar part through Kurt Cobain's amp from BLEACH). The sound of this record is unlike any others out there today...easily some of the heaviest shit you've ever heard. It will appeal to fans of a large variety of heavy music, but to drop a few names: Asunder, Coffins, Corrupted, 13, Thorr's Hammer, Evoken and anything slow and brutally heavy. Really well written songs, both lyrically, conceptionally and of course the riffs are sick. Remastered by Mell Dettmer (Sunn, Earth, Boris) to make it even that much better! The album was released last August on Kreation Records.

Review:

Review from KvltSite by Gautham.

"I don't normally judge a book by its cover but when I first laid my eyes on the cover of Grey's debut CD I felt like Sisters of the Wyrd was going to be some sort of hippie/ jam friendly/ stoner rock masquerading as doom with three women who looked more like leftovers from the 70s who crawled out of a trailer to record this album. The opening few seconds of the album with At Night's gentle vocal harmony and melodic doom riff did little to change that impression. Then like a slow building thunderstorm that decides to rain down on a bright, sunny afternoon, the music changed. That opening melodic doom riff slowly and almost organically became a dark, depressing doom riff. After that, there really was no turning back as preconceptions were thrown out of the window and Sisters of the Wyrd became one of my favourite albums of the year.

Sisters of the Wyrd is an album with 5 songs (with the last being a completely ferocious cover of 13's Wither) that clocks in at a little over an hour. The songs are all dark and depressing while being heavy as fuck. While Black Sabbath might be the primary influence on the band it's the little touches of funeral doom ala Skepticism, sludge that's got a slight NOLA feel to it and a crusty edge that's like a slowed down Dystopia that sets Grey apart from the majority of their peers. I really can't find fault with the band's sound as it takes in the best of the sludge/ doom sound and turns it into an absolute monster. Another thing that I have to allot high marks to is the vocal performance of Suzanne Morales Haynes aka GypsyWitch. Her voice has that crusty, raw feel to it that is equal parts despair and anger.

I'm not going to bother with mentioning any individual songs for praise because this is one superb and consistent doom metal album where each song just builds on the atmosphere and enhances the album as a whole. It might be a bit extreme for the casual doom metal listener but Sisters of the Wyrd is essential for the doom connoisseur amongst you.

For an all girl trio that's playing some pretty extreme doom metal, Grey seems to have received little to no hype. I can't understand that, especially when something as overrated as Gallhammer get so much press and attention. Maybe Grey need to be wearing Celtic Frost and Amebix t-shirts too but at the end of the day this is a quality band that really doesn't need to do anything more than play their music to blow minds. Still, if you must, then think of them as a less hyped and far superior version of Gallhammer and plunge right in. 5/5"

New Alice In Chains Single "A Looking In View"

By now most of you have heard the new song "A Looking In View" by Alice In Chains. Frankly, I am pretty anxious to hear the rest of the CD. I know it won't be the same without Layne Staley's devilishly nasaly harmonies, but the music still sounds awesome and new vocalist William Duvall is a nice compliment to Cantrell's vocals. Let me know what you guys think!
