FREE DOWNLOAD: Bong Hits From the Astral Basement Volume 2

Where'd the time go? Opening on blasts of smoke and fuzz, 2013 offered a fat stash of stoner rock stickiness, nowhere better captured than in Heavy Planet's basement. We sift through countless stems and seeds to share what we believe are the finest sonic buds you haven't heard. Sure, we wax and wince on Sabbath, Kyuss, Sleep, and Clutch as much as the next blog. But our bread and bud-butter is offering you, the tirelessly faithful, an avenue through which to find your new favorite band.

The release of Bong Hits from the Astral Basement: Volume I saw sixty-one vastly underappreciated artists reaching speakers on a scale that transcended language barriers and wet coughs. Since 2008, Heavy Planet has strived to be your go-to, crafting easy introductions between bands and listeners. With Volume I, our middlemen received a staggering, humbling response in terms of both submissions and downloads. As a new year briskly approaches and promising new sounds emerge from breezeways and back alleys, we're stoked to offer a beefed-up Volume II.

Our repeat offenders are what keep this thing alive. Heavy Planet is proud to be part of a music scene boasting the heaviest purple-fiber jams and most absolutely loyal fans. These hand-picked nugs embody just a fraction of our gratitude to those of you who keep coming back and never fail in spreading the good word. Clear a spot on the couch and strap on some headphones. Here's to you, comrade.

Thank you and Happy New Year,

Heavy Planet

Ripple Music Brings You Sonic Nirvana on Their First Ever Heavy Rock Compilation Record - Out This Spring!

Shining the spotlight on a musical movement that’s ready to blast the world back four decades, Ripple Music is releasing the long awaited Heavy Ripples double 7” compilation that features the sonic delights of four up and coming acts who embrace the sounds of rock n’ roll the way it used to be played: aggressive, uncompromising, honest, gritty, and most of all, fun! More than just an ode to the old school ways of rock n’ roll, these four bands embrace the lifestyle and the sounds of a bygone era. This release has a limited first pressing of 500 copies and the tripped-out gatefold art was contributed by Wayne “Braino” Bjerke, who has lent his artistic talents to all of the Mighty High releases to date.

70’s rock preservationists Stone Axe contribute a cover version of the Mos Generator tune, “Nightwolf”; Sun Gods in Exile, on loan from the incomparable Small Stone Records, turn in the southern-tinged “Over My Broken Bones”; the UK’s dirty grit-rockers Grifter offer up two tracks, “Small Man Syndrome” and the tongue-in-cheek nod to porn legend Ron Jeremy, “Hey Ron”; and Brooklyn’s favorite sons of punkified regressive rock Mighty High drop the beastly “Hempaphobic”.

Heavy Ripples will be available on April 19th, 2011, just in time for all of the 4/20 celebrations around the world. Here's what the press is saying:

"Stone Axe's “Nightwolf” is one of the bad ass of all bad ass songs, reminds me a bit of ZZ Top’s “Tush” mixed with early Judas Priest. Sun Gods in Exile’s “Over My Broken Bones” and continues the great sound from their 2009 debut. Grifter gets two songs on this release, and both are punchy, upbeat, catchy and Grifter seems to be having a lot of fun. Mighty High's “Hempophobic” is fast punchy and the guitars are tight with hints of a blues tune in between the bong hitting. This delicious slab of wax first pressing is limited to 500 copies so don’t hesitate on ordering yours." -- The Soda Shop

“As we approach the end of winter this is the perfect thing to melt those frosty edges off of you and warm you up a bit . . . Lots of pure grit and grooves to spare on this one." - Heavy Metal Time Machine

Heavy Rotation-Various Artists-"Cowbells and Cobwebs"

Now this is what I'm talking about, 28 tracks of pure fucking stoner rock. The thing that I like the most about this compilation is the consistancy amongst all the bands drawing their influences from the typical Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Fu Manchu, etc. Every song is just a complete riff heavy stoner rock jam with no filler albeit the occasional psych or southern rock homage. There may be a few familiar names here such as Propane Propane, Samsara Blues Experiment, and Keef, but for the most part the compilation is just a brilliant collection of relatively unknown and unsigned bands. It is very apparent that a lot of time and hard work went into the creation of this CD, from the awesome selection of bands to the badass packaging to the production, the guys over at PlanetFuzz are keeping the dream alive. THE FUZZ LIVES ON!! Buy this CD now!

What others are saying:

"In a time where CD sales are dwindling faster that the rainforests thanks to illegal downloading it takes a brave individual to decide to start a record label. It also, however, takes a savvy businessman to realise that, to sell a product you have to present a very attractive package to entice people to buy it. Planet Fuzz Records out of Australia are the latest in a long line of people to stick their dicks on the chopping board and put a product out there for mass consumption and thank whatever deity you choose to follow that they are!!! Fortunately these guys understand that if you want to compete with the wall eyed geeks that prefer to deal in freebie bytes you have to make the public want what you've got and this is indeed a very impressive package in every way. Let's start with the cosmetics. Immediately this hits you as more than a bunch of chancers chucking out a CD-R in the hope of making a fast buck. 28 bands over 2 CDs, Cowbells on the one hand and Cobwebs on the other, that comes in a beautiful digipak cover featuring quality artwork and enough information and web addresses for the bands to provide additional hours of research entertainment for the hardcore stoner fan. All that and stickers as well!!! Planet Fuzz have clearly thrown every ounce of passion and every last dollar into making this the most professional and attractive piece of work they can as it reeks of pure quality and conviction. Stick this in the CD player and it would be reasonable to assume that over the span of 28 bands there would be some fluctuations in quality and some real stinkers in there but here, as with the overall packaging, Planet Fuzz have come up trumps as each band shows a consistently high level of quality in every aspect from the production to the playing and the song writing abilities. This doesn't pretend to be anything other than a compilation of stoner bands; it doesn't throw us any titbits of death metal, hardcore or punk and is 100% smoking riffs all the way. Many of the bands such as Audio Dream Sister, Gate 9, Electric Cavemen and Cigmouth will be unfamiliar to most but they all stand shoulder to shoulder with the more well known names present here such as Samsara Blues Experiment, the Graviators, Honcho and The Grand Astoria. Admittedly all this fuzz can be a little hard to take in one sitting as all the bands do tend to draw from very similar origins...a dash of Sabbath, a mighty fuck off great big dose of Kyuss, a similarly large knob of Fu Manchu and a soupcon of Goatsnake for good measure, seasoned with some tasty touches of psychedelia and southern jams. As a result it is hard to pick out any real highlights, partly because everything is so damn good but also because of the inherent similarities between nearly all the bands involved. For the die hard stoner fan though this should be an essential...nay compulsory purchase as this one release acts as a gateway to a whole new underground world where the riff is king and fuzz is the new religion. It is admirable and indeed essential that Planet Fuzz exists. Just because the industry is in decline doesn't mean that people shouldn't keep trying and that people don't still want to buy a quality product. Word is that Planet Fuzz have now signed Propane Propane to record an album and work is due to start soon compiling the next instalment in the compilation series. If this album is an indication of the future for the label than Small Stone, Rise Above, Buzzville...etc should be getting worried and looking over their shoulders. Do yourselves a favour lovers of the smoking riff and buy this."-Ollie (The Sleeping Shamen)

---------------------------------------------

"To be honest, only a handful of stoner/heavy rock compilations are particularly worth releasing. Up until now, there are only a few that have been put together with a wealth of ideas, especially those who include a lot of unknown bands and/or unknown songs from well-known bands. Compilations that come to my mind are 'Welcome To MeteorCity', 'Doom Capital', 'Judge Not...' or 'Sucking The 70's Vol.I & II', just to give a few examples. That is the way to do it! 'Cowbells & Cobwebs' offers the same level of quality, like the ones which I mentioned before. At the same time, it's also the first Planetfuzz Records release and perhaps you have noticed this name before, because these are the same guys who are running the PlanetFuzz webzine. It is good to see that there is still a vital community in Australia and I hope that their record label will continue to grow. But whatever happens, 'Cowbells & Cobwebs' is a pretty impressive start because it features 28 mostly unknown heavy rock bands from all over the world with a total of 28 tracks; most of them are previously unreleased. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of these discs, and actually quite blown away by a couple of songs in particular! Here, everything is about big fat riffs, heavy grooves, and insanely fuzzed-out guitars and bass.

Texas' ORTHODOX FUZZ lay down a fat southern rock groove with plenty of blues and metal while ARROWHEAD please my ears with 'Eagle Death Machine', a killer track with super heavy riffs reminiscent of Sir Lord Baltimore or Mountain. For heaven's sake, I need to hear more from this Australian band! Austria's SONS OF GIANTS also conjure the ghosts of the 1970's, but the Kyuss influence can still be felt strongly. Both have been successfully melted together, so that 'Mr. Woo' is the next highlight for me. MOAB represent with 'Morelore' the doomier end of the heavy rock/metal spectrum and offer great potential. It seems that these Californian guys are a sucker for Yob. Norway's HONCHO is the next positive surprise and I clearly remember when I wrote a review about their debut album 'Corporate Rock', released by Water Dragon Records in 2002. Back then I was not convinced by their standardized heavy fuzz rock. It, is therefore, all the more pleasing that their track 'Earth' is very different from the tunes on the album. Apparently, they have discovered their old Black Sabbath records, because 'Earth' is their doomiest and heaviest tune so far. Well done!

Another outstanding Scandinavian band on 'Cowbells & Cobwebs' is TOMBSTONES, who deliver a mighty blues-driven mid-tempo rocker. Here, too, 1970's heavy rock and metal have been closely intertwined and the result is superb. Netherland's FLOODSTAIN walk in Sixty Watt Shaman's footsteps and manage to set their own marks with 'Slumbering Titan Slayer'. This powerful tracks shows once more that the compilation offers an excellent opportunity for the listener to discover some truly impressive unknown heavy bands. Well ok, I could go and on because the number of killer tracks is simply breathtaking. PROPANE PROPANE from Sweden also belong to this category. 'It's Alright' combines Brant Bjork's coolness with Blue Cheer's mind-blowing heaviness and I can only hope that this band will release their first album as soon as possible. Ok, enough for today or this review will never end. In fact, 'Cowbells & Cobwebs' is a pulverizing killer compilation and if I had to buy it, I would do it immediately. Also worth mentioning is the demanding packaging that is just as tasteful as the included bands. So, if you're a fan of heavy fuzzrock in all facets then this should be on your upcoming shopping list."-KK (Cosmic Lava)

Stoner Rock Ohio Blowin' Smoke CD Compilation

Blowin' Smoke is the new compilation featuring some of O(high)o's finest bands. Bands such as Threefold Law, Masters of Luxury, and Venomin James have been crushing the Cleveland area for the past few years now. So if you want to hear what all the hype is about, head on over to StonerRockOhio.com and pick up your copy now!

Contributing bands:

Red Sun -"bottom-heavy, psychedelically enticing metal/rock which somehow manages to simultaneously embody the steady-bulldozer attitude of doom and the impassioned urgency of the best hardcore punk."-Zachary V. Sunderman, Bastion Recordings."

MySpace

Smoke Theory- "Never putting aside the influence of AC/DC, ZZ Top, Ramones, Led Zeppelin, Slayer, Black Sabbath or for that matter any surfy, greasy or garagey early Rock'n'Roll the Smoke rolls on. In a world of fake Rock'n'Rollers who stress image over riffage Smoke Theory take a stand as a band who doesn't rely on fruity hairdo's, women's clothing and tons of shit pierced to their faces to make a statement. The music speaks for itself.

MySpace

Spider Scorpion-"Metal/Bossa Nova/Punk"

MySpace

Threefold Law- "Rising from the ashes of the Burning River, Threefold Law's signature riffs and dark grooves took hold in late 2006. They honor the pioneers of doom, such as Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Trouble, Pentagram, Cathedral, and Down while spinning a unique tale of darkness and despair. Threefold Law released their first EP recording in April of 2009, titled “Killer of the Sultan.” The band secured a spot on the first Stoner Rock Ohio Showcase in 2008 as well as the second one in June of 2009. Threefold Law continues to play the northeast Ohio region with fan support ranging from Akron to Australia."

MySpace

Venomin James- "Based out of Kultland's Crowe Valley, the home of murder, mormon and mayhem. Our sound is a straight up mix of rock, doom, metal and occult esotera."

MySpace

Blacklight Betty- "Blacklight Betty is a three piece rock band based in Cleveland, OH.

The group features guitarist/vocalist Camille Champa, drummer/vocalist Adam Phillips and bassist/vocalist Larry Kalal.

If you keep a regular supply of Nag Champa, own a turntable or have some form of shag carpet in your home, then we want to be your band. Energy. Volume. The Riff. Rock and Roll is not dead, it has just gone underground. We can't think of a more perfect place for a blacklight."

MySpace

Jupiter Sideburns- "A heavy rock band from Dayton Ohio, who escaped the alien attacks, decides that the weight of the world is on their shoulders. They find one of the aliens' ships that was disabled and left behind after the fighting was over. They repair it and restart the ships internal memory. What they find has only been seen by god since the beginning of time. The data base is massive. It includes everything about the Black Orb Aliens' civilization from their history to their episodes of Evil. And one very important piece of information. Their next destination: Jupiter. The band plots a course to the other side of the galaxy. They gather their instruments, belongings and kiss their loved ones goodbye possibly for the last time. They forget one important item. Shaving cream. This is the story of Jupiter Sideburns"

MySpace

Lo Pan- "All movement in the universe is caused by tensions between positive and negative furies, and when the furies are out of balance, as they are in LO-PAN who is cursed, then they turn into demon and live forever. Repulsive and evil existing only to plague the living. A creature of fast dark destructive power. "IT'S ALL IN THE REFLEXES!"

MySpace

Masters of Luxury- "If you have not yet heard these guys, then there is no more perfect time than now. Masters Of Luxury are from the Columbus/Dayton Ohio area and combine elements of progressive, doom, and stoner metal to provide the listener with a very satisfying listening experience. Citing influences such as Tool, Black Sabbath, Dillinger Escape Plan and Sleep, all can be heard on their newly released EP entitled "Robot Love Songs" as well as their previous release "Welcome To Opulence". Check them out if you are a fan of any of the aforementioned bands.

MySpace

Mechanics of Things- "Mechanics of Things" was born from an inspiration of singer, Paul Conaway, evolving from hobby to live band in the summer of 2007. In the winter of 2009, Mechanics of Things began recording a full-length CD at Cleveland's Ante Up Studio under producers Mark Baker and Pete Schmuel of Sonar 73 Productions. In January 2010, Mechanics of Things fortified their powerful dimension, adding ML, former drummer of NUCLEON, to their already trebuchet sound. Currently, Mechanics of Things is looking forward to their first CD release, slated for summer 2010. The CD reflects the progress of the band including tracks such as "Gasoline" and "Halo" and a number of new compositions meshed with an iron slab, full of rawkmusic tilt. The band seamlessly blends a mix of metal, hard rock and old school punk. (If White Zombie, Kyuss and Black Sabbath joined together and gave birth, Mechanics of Things would be The Bastard Child..)"

Heavy Planet Compilation CD??

Hey people, I have been throwing around the idea of putting together a CD of tunes for charity. The money would not only go to a good cause, but would also be a great way to get the word out about your band. I would like to see what kind of response I get before actually putting the details together. I would like to get around 15-20 bands on the CD(s) if not more and charge $10 with all proceeds going to charity. My wife is an artist and is excited about designing the artwork for the CD. If you are interested please send me an e-mail with a high quality MP3 and a brief bio on your band. I will only accept bands that fall into the Stoner Rock/Sludge/Psychedelic/Doom categories. I will review each band before inclusion on the CD. If anyone has any suggestions such as a certain charity please send them to me. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Peace! \mm/
