Create, Publish and Share Your Playlist With Playmoss, We Did and It Is Awesome!

When I started the "Song of the Day" feature a few months ago, I thought that it would be a great idea to have a playlist of all the songs featured that month so the readers could listen to while perusing the site. I was looking for a website that would have the following features: 1) able to be embedded on the site 2) available as a mobile app 3) have a custom page listing all of the playlists created. In this day of technology, I never in a million years would have thought it to be that much of a challenge. Well, it was until I discovered Playmoss.

Playmoss allows you to embed the playlist on your site. It is customizable and shows the video or album art while the song plays.

Playmoss is available as either an iOS or Android app so you can listen on your mobile device of choice.

Playmoss allows you to create a custom page with your logo as well as any of your sites related links: Bandcamp, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

So you are probably wondering how you add all the songs to your playlist. This is my favorite feature. You add songs by grabbing the url you find for the song on YouTube, Sound Cloud and Vimeo (Bandcamp will be going live in a few weeks) and placing the url of the song in the search box as you edit. Although, the easiest way to do this is to add the Google Chrome extension to your browser and add the songs that way. When you click on the Playmoss icon at the top of the page the available songs will turn green. Then, all you have to do is add the song to whichever playlist you choose. Pretty simple and very cool.

They are also avid supporters of great artists and their artwork and have a very prompt and attentive customer service department.

New Band To Burn One To: DIRT WIZARD

Filthy, dirty, sleazy and fuzzy are words you can use to describe this dusty tornado of riffs known as Dirt Wizard. Hailing from Peoria, Illinois, these four bandmates kick a footful of fuzz-laden Earth right into your face and before you can clear your eyes your are hit by another sonic blast of sleazy stoner rock goodness. Harmonic chops, dual-guitar heroics and a steady guiding rhythm thrust you into a vortex of  rock and roll superiority. Once the dust has settled, you find yourself grasping for breath and needing a fine beverage of choice. The band's latest EP  "No Son of Mine" is currently up for grabs on their Bandcamp at a "name your price". New Band To Burn One To: LIZZARD WIZZARD

One album that has been furiously buzzing around in my head lately is the new self-titled album from Brisbane, Australia's Stoner/Doom crushers LIZZARD WIZZARD. While maybe not new to some of you, it has recently caught my ear and I have decided to share this glorious slab o' doom with all of you. It's all here folks...ten ton hammer riffs, resonating feedback, slow and hypnotizing groove and a grimey vocal barrage. My head is still abuzz from all the fuzz. Key tracks include...."Twilight of the Terminator", my favorite track "Bong Dive" and a cover of the Game of Thrones theme cleverly disguised as "Game of Cones". Except this time we are going bigger! That's right, as if 61 songs were not enough, this time we are aiming for 100. We are letting everyone know early so you have plenty of time to get your song submitted. Below you will find some cool facts and rules for submission.

• Remained on Bandcamp's "Stoner Rock" Top 20 for 39 straight weeks and still currently remains in the Top 30.

THE RULES:

• Please submit your song to us in either MP3 or WAV format. It must be no more than 291 MB.
• The song that you are submitting must be EXCLUSIVE to Heavy Planet. This means that the song can be found on no other compilations other than ours. It can be previously released. For example, on an album that you have already released. You may submit a "live version" of a song as long as it is of superior quality. If you want to make a song just for this compilation it is entirely up to you. We will not accept cover songs.

Heavy Planet Radio Now On MixCloud

Stoner Rock/Doom/Psychedelic/Sludge

Heavy Planet Radio has been on Facebook for a little over a year now gaining over 1000 "likes" along the way, primarily posting tunes by way of Bandcamp and YouTube links. While not your typical "radio" station we, or shall I say our main "DJ" Stump spins the tunes basically playing anything that he feels like playing. Heavy Planet Radio is a great way for fans to hear new music and for bands to get their music heard. We get a shit ton of music sent into the Heavy Planet office on a weekly basis and feel bad that we are not able to feature many of the bands on our main site. Therefore I have decided to launch a Heavy Planet Radio station on MixCloud. Through MixCloud we will feature New Music playlists, staff writer playlists, the possibilities are endless. The MixCloud app is also available for iPhone and Android so you can listen to Heavy Planet Radio anywhere you go. People always complain that radio sucks and while not your typical "radio" station, we hope that you will tune in and listen.

Witch Hunter Records is a small independent label from Nottingham concentrating on limited runs of good looking releases, with an emphasis on d.i.y values and pay what you want downloads, catering to fans of hardcore, sludge, doom, stoner, punk and alternative music.

Witch Hunter Records is run by Chris Kaye. Chris used to play guitar in Cape Canaveral and Bumsnogger. He also used to put on gigs at The Old Angel in Nottingham as part of the Junior Showtime Collective, which put on such bands as Orange Goblin, Beecher, Send More Paramedics, Narcosis, Taint and Mistress. After a 5 year self-imposed hiatus, to concentrate on more important things (wife & kids), this is his way of getting involved and putting something back into a great underground scene.

The label has a ton of killer bands on their roster such as Trippy Wicked, Iron Witch, Knife Crimes and yesterday's "New Band To Burn One To", Limb.

Nuclear Dog's Atomic Split: Enos - "Chapter 1" / Red Desert - "Damned by Fate"

I went through an extremely long spell of time where discovering new music, or more accurately, new good music, was a rarity. Of course I was using mainstream sources to provide this for me for the most part, which two decades ago meant the local 'hard rock' radio station. Word of mouth was probably a better source for discovering new music that was worth listening to back then, but no matter the source, rare was the new album that had me stitching my face back on after the first go 'round on the turntable. Two decades or so ago that began to change a little with my introduction to the interwebs and online radio stations that would play some stuff out of the mainstream. Those stations typically catered to the college crowd and were heavy on 'indie' music, which wasn't heavy, but at least some of it was fresh and good, a modicum of it anyway . . . you know, just like the radio. So, I figured that's just the way it was because that's the way my rock n' roll world had rotated for decades. And then one day, taking advantage of Amazon's feature "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" I discovered Kyuss and Sasquatch, and the floodgates opened, revealing not just a whole new world, but THE world I had always dreamed of, one I always wished could exist, where the guitar was king and the riffs were always . . . primal . . . and here it was! Not long after I discovered Heavy Planet. Holy Shit! Every day a new band, a new album of near perfect rock! I can't use enough exclamation marks to express my excitement. And it got better because, as you may have noticed, I now write for Heavy Planet, so the dream has soared. All of this to say that there is an inordinate amount of truly great rock n' roll out there, music designed and played the way rock was meant to be. Today, I introduce to you two of THE very best albums I've heard recently, starting with Red Desert's "Damned by Fate" and moving to Enos' "Chapter 1".

 

Red Desert - "Damned by Fate"

Red Desert as an entity have been around since 2004, with the typical stoner/doom rock band history of losing and gaining bandmates along the way, but always focused on playing their undeniable vision of heavy, low rock, never losing enthusiasm throughout the 8 year journey that has taken them to the point of release of their first full length album just this past month. "Damned by Fate" is a follow up to 2008's EP "18 Wheels", although the so called EP carried 6 full length songs. The former album was comprised of some mighty tasty rock n roll tunes, but in the 4 years between its release and the August, 2012 release of "Damned by Fate" Red Desert fine tuned their music by down tuning to an incredible, almost primordial degree. The music on this album is the epitome of the stoner sound, with an earthy salvo that rivals the mightiest Richter rumble combined with a champion summertime thunderstorm. The sound Red Desert have produced on this new release is satisfying and thrilling, providing deadly and dangerous reverberations that could shatter the quake proof glass of home and car, or force you to put that stereo warranty into effect once those high powered speakers get blown away by the massive riffs offered up on each song of this superb album.  "Damned by Fate" immediately gets thrown into the 'album of the year' cauldron for consideration in 2012. 

Red Desert have managed to establish a style that is fresh and genuine, easily recognizable as their own, with songs that reflect their tremendous ability and energy, each one worthy of being someone's favorite. For this humble reviewer, the opening track "Older No Wiser" (what a great title) almost immediately unleashes double digit g force riffage intensity before transitioning into a first rate rock song that epitomizes tremendous stoner qualities with the big fat guitars and bass, plus a clean, crisp trap attack. "2012" has a higher tempo, with scorching solos and blitzkrieg drums blasting away on top of the heavy and low guitar chords and bass riffs. There is no wannabe songs on this album, nothing that doesn't belong, no shortage of ability and talent with this group of in your face, in your soul rockers.

ENOS - "Chapter 1"

"Chapter 1" has been out for a while now, so it's not new in terms of chronology, but we've not reviewed it up to this point on Heavy Planet and it is a damn fine album from a damn fine rock group that deserves attention. It will soon enough be eclipsed by a newer release from Enos, hopefully before the end of the year, so to prime the pump you might take this opportunity to see what these guys are all about. What you'll find is a band that manages to bring both heart and polish to their music. The album is superbly produced, without skimping an iota on heart and effort. The guitars are huge, and down tuned enough to be quite enjoyable upon first and all subsequent playings. Drums are crisp and clean, adept at providing a rhythm while providing something special that will likely crack a smile while cracking your neck. The bass rivals the guitar in both presence and signature sound.

"Chapter 1" tells the story of Enos, the last chimp to go into space for the U.S.A. prior to John Glen's epic mission. Enos, the band, have done a great job of creating a collection of first rate fuzz that also tells the story of this brave and unusual animal. Along with the EP, Enos have published a comic book relating one version of the chimp's adventure into and return from the ether, available from the links below that accompany this review.

Another interesting aspect of Enos, they have been signed by Stargun Music out of Great Britain, the same label that brings us the highly rated stoner / psych bands Trippy Wicked and the Cosmic Children of the Knight, Stubb, and Steak, among other great rock bands from the UK. Stargun Music may very well rival Small Stone Records in the U.S. as the best rock label, while Enos certainly sits in the pantheon of great rock artists, proven by the superb album "Chapter 1". I am eagerly awaiting Chapter 2, regardless of its true title.

New Band To Burn One To: CERBER

Heavy Planet presents...CERBER!

Today's "New Band To Burn One To" hails from Olsztyn, Poland.

Band Bio:

CERBER plays an uncompromised blend of hardcore, stoner/sludge metal and specific, strong groove, not avoiding either melodies or a complete lack of them. We try not to give a fuck and reap what the world sow in our minds by transferring it into hatred- driven noise
 

Thoughts:

"Featuring a gravel-fed howl and a total disregard for the damage that will be done to the listener's eardrums, Poland's Cerber create a chaos-filled bludgeoning of hardcore inspired groove. The guitar chugs and moans through the jagged rhythms while the groove sways back and forth encrusting your very being with a thick and murky sludge. Even though the music is very raw and unapologetic, the melody and well-balanced production rings true to form. Their latest EP "Mad At the Soul" which has lyrics primarily sung in their native tongue is available for FREE on Bandcamp. Get up off your ass and feel the crunchy groove of Cerber!

Zac's Double Dose: Eidetic Seeing / KozybunX

Eidetic Seeing: Drink The Sun

We haven't dabbled to much with Heavy Psychedelia here at the Double Dose, and upon stumbling onto Eidetic Seeing, now is as good a time as ever. Eidetic Seeing formed in 2009 in Brooklyn and recently released their debut album Drink The Sun. The songs are fuzzy and rely on Sean's [Forlenza] cosmic guitar tones. Danilo's [Randjic-Coleman] bass is always present and never over-shadowed, adding depth to the spacey climb out of this galaxy, while Paul's [Feitzinger] drums keep this journey in time. Paul also incorporates all necessary waves and frequencies expected during inter-galatic travel with his synthesizer work. Tracks from Drink The Sun are now streaming at bandcamp and soundcloud, check them out and enjoy the haze.

KozybunX: Practice Room Demo.N

Poland reliably delievers some of the best doom, sludge, and stoner metal in the world. This is no easy task, knowing the Europe in its entirety has bestowed us with just about every heavy music genre known and loved today. KozybunX are another one of Poland's finest, mastering the low frequencies category. If you're looking for some ground-breaking and progressive doom, you've come to the wrong band. Rather than reinvent doom, KozybunX pummel your brain-stem with simple, slow, heavy riffs and have replaced any sort of lyrics with vocal samples, which can be quite terrifying. Heavy Planet Updates

Hi all! I just wanted to give everyone an update on what has been going on around Heavy Planet as of late. Our main goal is to give as many bands exposure to as many people as possible and to expose fans to as much music as possible. One way we are trying to achieve that is through our Facebook page. Each day we will feature as much cool music as we can, this can include Bandcamp links, YouTube videos, exclusive streams, etc. To maximize daily exposure for our "New Band To Burn One To" or our CD reviews, we like to give the band or album featured a full day of exposure on the main page. Facebook is a great way for us to feature much more music whether it be new or classic. So "like" us today to hear something new or something you may not have heard in a while.

Back on Sunday October 16th the innagural Heavy Planet podcast premiered on Grip of Delusion Radio. The podcast will be monthly and will be available to download 24-48 hours after airing. Next podcast will feature some new, classic and obscure Sludge bands with Seth handling "DJ" honors. It will air on Sunday November 20th from 4-6 pm EST.

Heavy Planet has also opened up a new merchandise store. The artwork was designed by my wife. Get yourself some new threads and help support Heavy Planet while your at it. We are currently looking into a European version of the store as well for our international readers.

The Soda Shop Volume 1 Free Compilation

Our brothers from another mother at The Soda Shop have just released their very first compilation in honor of their 2nd anniversary. There are a ton of great bands such as Venomin James, Gozu, Lo-Pan, etc and they are offering it for free download on Bandcamp. Here is the press release:
