New Band To Burn One To: SZIKES

We have some Serbian instrumental stoner/desert rock to light one up to today as the Vojvodina four piece (Akos, Karesz, Pedja, and Tamas) have just unleashed their self-titled debut, with five tracks of blistering instrumental that should be found somewhere in the deep outback of Palm Springs, not necessarily from a place in Eastern Europe. But who cares about location? So long as the music rocks then it’s all great in our book, and SZIKES do indeed rock, as they slowly burn the candle away as their psychedelic leanings build and dwell the bands' sound before crashing in with heavy swathes of stoner excellence.

We might have trouble pronouncing their names and song titles, but the sound of SZIKES is one we’re going to be keeping a joyous ear on for a while. Gnarly artwork too!

Zac's "Double Dose": Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel / Tongue

Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel: Arcane

The latest track from French Stoners Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel involves some grinding rhythms, zombies, and a glorious RIFF for the ages! The single is entitled "Z" and is a precursor to what awaits listeners on their upcoming release Arcane. The quintet got rollin' some seven years ago and have since released an EP, a split, a DVD and their debut album "Soundtrack From The Motion Picture". Quite the resume, huh?? The band of brothers have also shared the stage with some killer acts including Karma to Burn, Ufomammut, Red Fang and Valient Thorr. You aren't sold yet?? Well, check out the music video for "Z" below and we will be sure to keep you updated on Arcane's official release date.

Tongue: A Night You'll Never Remember Vol 1: Who Fired The Workers Of Happiness Factory ?

Tongue is a Serbian one man project... and the man with the tongue is Vladimir Bizic or Ripkid for short. Ripkid's background lies with a hardcore-punk band, Lets Grow. The group has since dissolved [circa 2010], which is a total downer for devout punk enthusiasts. However, the extra time has allowed Mr. Ripkid to focus his creativity in a more stoner and experimental metal direction, which is good for us. A Night You'll Never Remember Volume 1: Who Fired The Workers Of Happiness Factory? is the first installment of what Tongue hope to turn into an EP trilogy.  The music is a calculated balance of psychedelic rock with a whole lot of feedback... kind of creating an eerie Rocky Horror Picture Show vibe... or maybe its just the lips. Either way, the EP is FREE so you know what to do!

New Band To Burn One To-Tona

Today's "New Band To Burn One To" is Tona. The band is from Serbia and combines the best elements of punk, rock and metal to create an unforgettable blend of relentless sounds. The band just released their debut "1000" for SKC NS, a regional government sponsored label that aims to promote alternative culture in Serbia. Do yourself a favor today and give them a listen.

Review:

"This is an absolute beast. TONA arrive in style with their first proper album, the accomplished production shifting it up a gear from their previous recordings. It's quite clearly one of those that fits into the category of music that has to be played FUCKING LOUD to be properly appreciated. Just as Johann Cruyff pioneered the concept of total football, TONA are exponents of total rock. Every instrument attacks, with George's vocals used rhythmically to intensify the hit. From the outset there's a claustrophobic, machine-like quality to the music, making you feel you're locked in for the duration. The opener "Red Cylinder" is a choking, Motorhead-inspired anthem, and the frantic pace continues with the bluesy, ZZ Top-esque "Pieces". Some temporary relief comes in the first half of the slower, mournful sounding "Box", still my favourite tune, before that too gives way to fist-smashing, Bitch Magnet style riffs.

Even when it slows down, however, such as in "Go Slow", there's no letup in the monstrous heaviness of the impact, in fact the effect is even heightened by the knowledge that another crushing blow is about to be delivered. You can tense yourself in anticipation, but you can't escape from its relentlessly pounding, superhuman power. Elsewhere "Grafit" benefits from being sung in Serbian, possessing a greater ferocity than the previous English version, before the appropriately fluid dirge "Through Water" closes, perhaps mercifully devoid of the brute force of the rest of the album, reflecting the listener's own feelings of being utterly drained from the experience, a soothing and strangely uplifting bandage on the wound. Nonetheless, by that time you've been well and truly battered.

Yes, of course it's a macho thing (they're Serbian, for fuck's sake!), a slightly masochistic kick for those who love a bit of visceral aural punishment. And what kind of indie-pop wanker doesn't? Highly recommended."
