Heavy Planet Hits 500,000

Today, Heavy Planet celebrates its 500,000th visitor to the blog. When I started this blog on 2/5/2008 as a way to get as much information about the music I love the most to the masses, I would have never imagined that four years later it would have that many visitors. As the blog elvolved, the addition of a way to promote new bands emerged as the "New Band To Burn One To" debuted on 2/26/08 with the band Stone Rider. Since that date hundreds of bands have been featured, hopefully finding their way onto labels and into the ears of many listeners. The blog also "employs" the talents of three writers who each contribute to the blog their passion for the music and remarkable writing skill. Others have helped along the way including Bill (the hardest working man in the business) from The Soda Shop and Colin from The Klepto's Guide and I thank you each for your valued effort in keeping Heavy Planet alive through some difficult times. I will save the rest for the 4th anniversary post. We here at Heavy Planet are very humbled and thank you so much for your dedication to what we feel is the greatest music in the world. We will continue to stay inspired through your support.

Top 10 Stoner Rock/Doom Albums Of 2009 Submissions

Alright people, it is that time of year again. Time for the obligatory Top 10 Albums Of The Year lists. Every year you see the same albums on everyones lists. I would love to see as many reader submissions as possible. In doing that, I will be interested to see some possibly obscure bands that most of us may or may not have heard of. I will post mine sometime in the month of January. I would like to take this time to wish all my readers at Heavy Planet a safe a happy holiday season. Right now I am a little backed up so after the 1st of the year, I plan on having two "New Band To Burn One To" posts. One will be on Wednesday and the other being on Saturday. To the 3 of you that responded to my post for help with the blog, I would like to thank you. The new format will not take place until the beginning of the new year so stay tuned. In the meantime, I will continue to post when I can. Hopefully more than I have. This week I will have a couple "New Bands To Burn One To" as well as a an "Album Of The Week". I really didn't like the Two For Tuesday feature because I just felt like I wasn't giving each band the exposure they deserve. For your enjoyment, here is a list of a few stellar releases you should hear.

1. Shrinebuilder-"Self-Titled"-Supergroup featuring Al Cisneros (Sleep, Om), Dale Crover (Melvins, Porn, Altamont), Scott Kelly (Neurosis), and Scott "Wino" Weinrich (The Obsessed, The Hidden Hand, Saint Vitus and Wino).

2. Fu Manchu-"Signs Of Infinite Power"-2009 release, the 11th album from the SoCal Alt-Rock quartet. If life is a highway, Fu Manchu s its soundtrack. Over the last dozen years, the Southern California quartet has perfected the art of the riff, mastered the depth of the groove and sharpened the edge of the hook. As Signs Of Infinite Power proves, the group's always-rockin' van still has plenty of gas left in the tank. Although Fu Manchu's alumni include such decorated names as Brant Bjork (Kyuss, QOTSA), the group's lineup has been rock-solid since 2001. If you're craving a fix of unpretentious, classic-minded Hard Rock in its most timeless form, look no further than Fu Manchu.

3. Iron Age-"The Sleeping Eye"-Austin, Texas' Iron Age have been slugging it out in hardcore and punk circles since the middle of the decade, touring with such contemporary hardcore luminaries as Rise And Fall and Fucked Up, while steadily honing the riffed-out hardcore sound established on their 2006 debut Constant Struggle. With The Sleeping Eye, Iron Age remains a modern torchbearer for the long tradition established by the crossover classics but twists the NYHC-inspired thrash of their debut to create something bigger and darker, enhancing the violence of their former efforts with mammoth Lovecraftian atmopshere.

4. Naam-"Self-Titled"-Naam manifests a signature brand of super-sonic and ultimately mesmerizing heavy psychedelia. Trance-like and punishing at times, this trio of psychonauts (John Bundy-bs, vox; Ryan Lugar gtr, vox; Eli Pizzuto drms) mold elements of classic psychedelia and prog with modern elements of jam-heavy bliss and apocalyptic amplitude. Naam's self-titled debut is more so an aural-intoxicating odyssey than an album. In its increasingly dark and sinister progression, the album depicts an unholy spiritual journey in the search for a higher plane of enlightenment. RIYL: Deep Purple, Hawkwind, Sleep, Floyd.

5. Baroness-"Blue Record"-Blue Record announces the re-awakening of Savannah s rock giants BARONESS. The follow-up to 2007 s Red Album, Blue Record is an instantly-classic album, with all the peaks and valleys, textures, and nuances that timeless records yield over repeated listens. Deep and dark; Blue Record overflows with gossamer melodies and striking, earnest riffs that have become the band s signature. Swollen and Halo , Jake Leg , War, Wisdom, and Rhyme , The Sweetest Curse , are just a few of the tracks that are both instant and unforgettable, making Blue Record the most poignant moment in the BARONESS canon to date.

Heavy Planet Needs Your Help

Over the past couple years I have come across some of the best bands that I have ever heard by writing this blog. When I started this blog I really had no idea what to expect. I knew that others shared my love for music, but I guess I was a bit naive because there are a lot of bands from overseas that have found my little blog to help promote their bands. Also, when I started this blog I had a ton of time and would post news, reviews, etc. everyday. Now I am lucky if I have the time to post once or twice per week. Please do not get discouraged if I do not post a feature on your band right away, I will eventually get to it. Also, if I do post a feature on your band the least you can do is reply with a simple thank you. I truly appreciate all the e-mails that I get stating how much you enjoy the blog. A few things that I hope to do in the future are 1) making an archive of the "New Bands To Burn One To" and 2) getting back to posting an "Album Of The Week" along with an archive for that as well.

I have a few questions for you guys and be honest.

1. Would you like to have new release info. posted here or do you go elsewhere?
2. Would you like news stories to be posted here or do you go elsewhere?
3. How often do you buy from Amazon.com or iTunes or do you just prefer to find elsewhere and if so where?
4. Do you ever click on banner ads or advertisements?
5. Would any of you be interested in helping out by posting reviews, news, etc.?

I'm Baaaaaaaccckkkk!

Hey people, I'm back! I wish I could say that I had a great vacation but I didn't. It all started off with a huge accident on I-95 in South Carolina where we sat in traffic for nearly two hours after a motorhome carrying a group of people crashed into another vehicle. There were three life flight helicopters that landed as both lanes of the highway were closed. We never did hear what happened to any of the passengers, but it was not a very pretty site. We just prayed that everyone was ok. Next, the weather was horrible. There were record cold temperatures, rain just about every day except for the last day, and wind gusts up to 35 mph making it feel much colder. The average temp. for Hilton Head this time of year is 85 and the average rainfall is 5.67". I think we got that amount in the first three days we were there. The high for one day was only 63 degrees where I heard was the lowest there since 1913. Also, my wife's cousin got stung in the achilles by a stingray, man did that look painful. On the bright side, I'm just glad we made it home safely and had a chance to drink a lot of beer and listen to some great tunes while being in some otherwise pleasant surroundings. Unfortunately, I didn't have internet access at the house we were staying at so I didn't have time to post. Go figure, a million dollar house with no internet access. WTF. Just for your information, that sounds like a lot but to rent the house for the week was only $2000 split between 4 couples.

Alright, enough blabbing about my vacation. I was contemplating a few changes to the blog. Here they are and please let me know what you think. I want this to be your blog as well as mine.

1. Eliminate News stories-You can go to Blabbermouth.net and StonerRock.com for the latest scoop.

2. Keep the Album Of The Week

3. Try to post more "New Bands To Burn One To"-Unbelievably, I do not really get many sent to me. (Only 1 while I was gone, and I think five lined up since the middle of April)

4. More free album downloads -If you guys have anything, please send the link to me)

5. Eliminate the Heavy Planet Store-I hate to do this because it took so long to create it but nobody buys CDs anymore anyways.

6. No Reviews-One thing that I really do not want to do is write reviews. Just not something I really like to do and I believe there are enough great reviews posted on other sites whose opinions matter much more than mine, plus at least most of them get paid for writing theirs.

7. Reader interaction-I am hoping that maybe some of you would be interested on occasion contributing your thoughts on a band. Whether it is a review, a band you dig and want other people to hear, whatever, I'm all ears.

Heavy Planet Followers Rule!

To all of those that follow Heavy Planet each and every day , I would like to extend my gratitude to you for your attention and dedication. I know that as of right now there are only 24 of you, but you are the 24 most important people to me and are the reason why I keep plugging away. Most blogs/websites have a staff of people to provide all of their posts while I do it all by my lonesome. I am a true music lover and know that many of you are also.

One of the features that I have on my blog is to promote new, exciting, original sounding upcoming bands. I cannot believe that any band would not want free promotion in these trying times. It is also baffling to me that many of these bands do not thank me nor duplicate my promotion on their Myspace pages or websites, I see that as being inconsiderate.

I do not write reviews of these submissions because frankly I do not have enough time to do so. I believe that just having the exposure to 300-600 people per day is worth a few hundred words. It only takes 1 person to suggest a band to a friend and then hope it spreads like wildfire. The internet is a very powerful tool so use it to your advantage.

I listen to each and every one of the bands that send CDs to me and have become a fan of many of them, bands that I would never have heard if it were not for this blog.

So going forward, keep the submissions coming and when I do post a feature on your band be kind enough to return the favor. Thanks!

BISON B.C. Launches Tour Blog

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada-based band BISON B.C. has launched a new tour blog at Exclaim.ca.

BISON B.C. was interviewed for last week's "The Metal File" podcast from Montreal's CHOM-FM. Download the show as an MP3 file at this location.

A new BISON B.C. track entitled "Slow Hand Of Death" has been posted on the group's MySpace page. The sound is primarily stoner rock mixed with doom metal yet this band lean away from the typical “just sound like Sabbath” approach that too many bands stick to. Instead they have elements that also remind me of Sleep,YOB and others plus they bring some of their own ideas to each and every track here. The vocals alternate between growls, screams and other styles that fall in between those two categories. The Devil and the Sea have found a method of delivering music that manages to be both comfortable and alarming and then go back and forth between the two. A very interesting release from these newcomers. (Metal Mark)

Album Of The Day-Solitude Aeturnus-"Alone" (2006)

During a time when U.S. based metal labels were all searching for the next meaner, faster, more extreme band, Arlington, Texas’ Solitude Aeturnus decided to go the much less hip doom route. This left the band with very little (and often no) label support when trying to get themselves heard by fans Stateside, and also made it quite difficult to even find their albums in record stores throughout much of the 90’s (which still seems to be an issue today). But the band’s devotion to their craft far eclipsed any roadblocks thrown their way by record labels, and eventually their perseverance paid off with growing support outside the United States. Over time, word began to spread about the monumental doom being forged by the five young Texans, and thanks in a large part to the wondrous World Wide Web, the band’s material eventually became a little easier to come by. The end of this year marks the 20th anniversary (!) for the Solitude Aeturnus crew, and now it’s actually difficult to find a doom fan whose life hasn’t been touched by this remarkable band in some way. Friends, the wait is finally over...after eight long years of silence, Alone has FINALLY arrived.

Considering how long the band has spent nearly shrouded in mystery here in the U.S., I’m gonna start things off by giving you an idea of how their sound has morphed over the years. For those not already privy, Solitude Aeturnus play a brand of doom steeped in the tradition of obvious bands such as Sabbath, Pentagram, and Witchfinder General, but they’re most often compared to Sweden’s Candlemass - a fair analogy, considering both bands' heavy reliance on pounding riffs, ripping leads, and extremely distinctive, grandiose vocals. However, after spending some solid time digging deeper into Solitude’s material, one can hear a multitude of other influences peppering the band’s doom as well. For example, very early Fates Warning abounded on their first two records, especially the slightly speedier Beyond the Crimson Horizon. Mid-era material, such as 1994’s amazing Through the Darkest Hour, found the band slowing things down, dirtying up the vocals, and completely bludgeoning folks with a guitar and bass tone damn-near along the lines of a Bolt Thrower grind. Their last release, 1998’s Adagio, featured a more polished sound, and infused some psychedelic elements into the guitar work, along with some of Lowe’s most experimental vocals to date. But no matter what flavorings the band chose to infuse into each subsequent release, all their material has been rooted in a solid nucleus of meticulously crafted songs wrapped in heavy doom riffs, bubbling leads, and insanely catchy choruses, and their latest is certainly no different.

In its simplest form, Alone sounds like a logical progression from ‘98’s Adagio. The production is still crisp and clean, allowing the listener to focus on any player at any given time, and when you have a band that so painstakingly crafts each member's contribution to each song, this really adds to the longevity of the record as new elements bubble forth during repeated listens (and trust me, folks, you will be repeatedly listening to this record). The new rhythm section of James Martin and Steve Nichols fits seamlessly into the mix, and Steve Moseley’s switch from bass to second guitarist makes it sound as if the man was born to do the job Edgar Rivera sadly decided to leave behind in 2001. The Heavy Planet Stoner Rock Blog Thanks You For Your Support!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to thank you for all of your positive e-mails and to the bands that have sent me their info (keep them coming). As if you couldn't tell by now, I was going to post a classic stoner album every Sabbath, but have since decided to feature a new album every day. I believe it to be a great way for you guys to check out some old/new bands that you may or may not have heard. I will also try to provide as much info as I can on the band such as a link to their Wikipedia page, MySpace, a stream if possible, etc. The only thing that I can not and will not do is provide illegal full album downloads. The best way to support the bands you like is to buy their stuff. So if you ever have any suggestions, want to submit a review, have a news story, report broken links, provide comments, feel free. Album Of The Day-Soundgarden-"Ultramega OK" (1988)

The Album Of The Day is "Ultramega OK" by Soundgarden.



The best expression of Soundgarden's early, Stooges/MC5-meets-Zeppelin/Sabbath sound, Ultramega OK is a dark, murky, buzzing record that simultaneously subverts and pays tribute to heavy metal. At times, the band and its recasting of over-the-top '70s hard rock seem smirky (Hiro Yamamoto's ridiculous vocal on "Circle of Power"; a "cover" of John Lennon's "One Minute of Silence"); a few, like the cover of "Smokestack Lightning," really do sink into turgid metal silliness. But the best moments are startling fusions of classic metal, punk rock, and psychedelia of the fuzz guitar variety, plus the local flavor of Green River and the Melvins. The difference was, Soundgarden were better songwriters, and their feel for memorable riffs and hooks lends greater power to both the rockers and the creepy, dirge-like slow numbers. It's a shame the album as a whole isn't more fully realized, because when separated out from the filler, the numerous highlights show why Soundgarden had such an enormous impact on the development of grunge. It may not be quite as complex or consistent as some of Soundgarden's later albums, but Ultramega OK is easily the best document of grunge's early, pre-Nirvana days. (Steve Huey, All Music Guide)

Woe to those who dismissed Sweden's Dozer as distant, perhaps unimportant satellites to the mostly U.S.-centric, late-'90s stoner rock solar system, for here they are: five years beyond that scene's generally accepted heyday, and ten into their career -- and still they orbit, only now exerting the gravitational pull of a major heavenly body upon the smaller bands that lie scattered across the vast stoner rock asteroid belt. Can you dig? In the event you can't, and prefer less colorful descriptive methods, suffice to say that Dozer's fourth album, Through the Eyes of Heathens, cements the band's gradual transition from perceived followers to acknowledged leaders of this perennially beloved subgenre of underground hard rock. In fact, the ten tracks making up Through the Eyes of Heathens almost serve as a "state of the genre" address, boasting a broad cross section of historic stoner rock hallmarks. Take infectiously stripped-down tunes like "Drawing Dead," "Born a Legend," and "The Roof, the River, the Revolver," for instance -- all of them so timeless they simultaneously fit in with the mid-2000s crop of post-stoner heavy blues-rock bands (Halfway to Gone Alabama Thunderpussy, etc.), and those Harley-on-the-highway, heavy groove-rock anthems laid down by Dozer's original contemporaries, Clutch and Fu Manchu. The apocalyptic "Until Man Exists No More" (featuring guest vocals from Mastodon's Troy Sanders) and the light-and-shade extremes of "Days of Future Past" dredge up massive Black Sabbath power chords from stoner rock's sister subgenre, doom, and the epic "Big Sky Theory" delves in neighboring psychedelic and space rock tendencies, while "From Fire Fell" and "Omega Glory" span the sonic evolution from Kyuss' pounding quasi-thrash to Queens of the Stone Age's driving riff-o-rama and quirky falsettos. There's even a total curve ball in "Man of Fire," where jabbing guitars and grungey vocal tones temporarily have the band sounding like Pearl Jam -- weird! In the end, if there's anything truly dating -- or at least geographically specific -- on this album, it's Dozer's obvious disinterest in any of the Southern rock overtones so prevalent among mid-2000s retro rock combos, but they're never really missed here. Rather, Through the Eyes of Heathens offers top-of-the-line stoner rock at a time when it's sorely needed to revitalize the style. (Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide)

DANKO JONES: New Video Blog Available

Canadian rock 'n' roll trio DANKO JONES has posted a second video blog featuring footage from the recording sessions for the band's new album, "Never Too Loud". Watch it below.

"Never Too Loud" was released on February 29, 2008 via Bad Taste/Soulfood Music. The CD was recorded at Studio 606 in Los Angeles with Grammy Award-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERS, RUSH, STONE SOUR, VELVET REVOLVER).

"Nick's worked on some of my favourite records of the last five years", the band's leader and namesake previously said, "and we're very excited to step into the studio with a producer who has such a great track record and incredible instincts."

The past five years have been a whirlwind for the band, which saw DANKO JONES play virtually every major European festival including Rock Im Park, Rock Am Ring, Wacken Open Air, Hellfest, Leeds, Lowlands, Roskilde, Gurten, Hultsfred, Reading and Ozzfest. In addition to non-stop touring Danko Jones also appeared on the new ANNIHILATOR album "Metal" (released in April 2007), on the track "Couple Suicide", with ARCH ENEMY singer Angela Gossow.
