Song of the Day-Thunderwhip-"High On the Mountain"

"High On the Mountain" is taken off of the band's 4-song demo "Bloodsucker". On this track, this 3-piece from Denmark delivers a thunderous right hook of huge and fuzzy vintage stoner metal riffage. The tune is solidified by a big and burly vocal, a cool clap along rhythm and a laid back groove. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Song of the Day-The Black Guild-"Figure It Out"

"Figure It Out" is taken off of the band's self-titled full-length debut release. This song oozes with elements of classic hard rock, southern rock swagger and a blues appeal. Add to that a gritty, rough around the edges vocal and a pedal to the metal hammond organ grind and you have one hell of a good thing going. This is just some damn good time, beer chuggin' rock n' roll. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Song of the Day-Matte Black-"Dust of This Planet"

"Dust of This Planet" is taken off of the latest full-length release of the same name. I'm in a bit of a chilled mood today and for that reason I have chosen this exquisite piece of work. This song from this Brooklyn 3-piece is a despondent dirge of deep and somber melody, slow and brooding rhythm and a heaviness that crushes your psyche. New Band To Burn One To: Never

Australian five-piece Never have delivered a swift kick to the bollocks with their demo EP. Three tracks of huge riffs, growling vocals, and heavy as hell percussion that smack you into next week. You listen to tracks like ‘Serpent Woman’ and ‘Trampled Like A Goat’ and can see the five Melbourne guys in a sweaty, dingy, badly lit bar, sweating the beer through their hair, ripping you a new one as your neck snaps from over use. This is pure rock and roll, and we love it! Get it at their Bandcamp.

Song of the Day-Burn Thee Insects-"Hydroponics"

"Hydroponics" is taken off of the upcoming release "Droid Intelligence" due out December 12, 2015 on Twin Earth Records. With a nasally drawn out vocal in similarity to Layne Staley from Alice in Chains, an over abundance of heavily fuzzed-out riffing, and an ethereal drone, this song is a nebulous jaunt through a hazy and starry sky. You will never feel the same again. The fuzz is abuzz! For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Song of the Day-Blue Snaggletooth-"The Last Voyage of Amra"

"The Last Voyage of Amra" is taken off of the band's latest 3-song EP of the same name. This song is six plus minutes of sonic pleasure. Maybe a little more epic than previous efforts, this awesome all-instrumental track from the band weaves in and out of jaw-dropping riffs, harmonious guitar work and head-banging metal rage. As the band states,"hop on board their spacecraft while there's still room for new riders." For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp | Soundcloud

Song of the Day-Space Guerilla-"Supercluster"

"Supercluster" is a new single release from the band and is a little "teaser" of sorts with the band hinting of a new full-length release "coming soon". Last year's "Boundless" EP was clearly one of my favorite instrumental releases from last year. The band's signature sound breeds an abundance of heavy cosmic riffing, intensified spaced-out soloing and that oh-so-clever use of astronaut vocal samplings. Goddamn is this fucking good! Song of the Day-Life Line-"The Loser and the Thief of Your Life"

"The Loser and the Thief of Your Life" is taken off of the band's 5-song EP "The Opener". Well, here is something you don't see too often, a stoner rock band from Shanghai, China and it is quite good. This song is a nice introduction to the band's free flowing fuzzy sound vaguely reminiscent of QOTSA. With a very righteous groove, intense build up and an absolutely outstanding and passionate vocalist, this song's infectious melody with be ingrained in your head for daze. Song of the Day-Waingro-"Van Sant"

"Van Sant" is taken off of the band's latest full-length release "Mt. Hood". Surprising to me is the fact that more people haven't jumped all over this band. This song is a potent mix of heavy doom riffs, stoner rock groove and hardcore punk that manages to be very aggressive but still maintain it's melody. Ear-shredding vocals scream out as the music crawls under your skin and burns deep into your soul. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Song of the Day-Saturna-"All Has Been Great"

"All Has Been Great" is the first single taken from the band's self-titled third full-length release due out March 11, 2016 through PRC Music /4ONE8. After settling in with a new singer and drummer, the band has unequivocally defined their brand of vintage heaviness with a more mature, structured and expansive sound. Song of the Day-Ironaut-"Acid Wash"

"Acid Wash" is taken off of the recently released self-titled 5-song EP". Originally hailing from the midwest this three-piece decided to take their sonic devastation to the west coast. The song starts off with an ear-grabbing riff and then unleash this beast with a demonic snarl. Gritty, unapologetic, and tight as hell, this song rages with harmonic duel guitar, furious drumming and surprising melody. I can't stop listening to this shit! For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Song of the Day-Ruff Majik-"Dioboli Musica"

"Dioboli Musica" is taken from the band's EP "The Bear". This 3-piece from South Africa set forth to create the nastiest, rawest, and unintelligible garage-rock possible, and I'll be damned if they didn't succeed. This song is a mixed bag of filthy blues-drenched sludge rock, an organic soulful feel and a downright raunchy groove. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

LP Review: Throneless - 'Throneless'

Sweden - a hot-bed of doom metal - have spawned another band determined to deliver monolithic slabs of heavy. Throneless, a 3-piece who hail from Malmö, are the latest signing by Italian imprint Heavy Psyche Sounds whose roster includes Black Rainbows, Karma To Burn & Ape Machine. Their self-titled debut recorded by the band themselves features 4 tracks of slow BPM, head-banging, down-tuned drones, that leaves you hypnotised and beaten into submission by the sheer power of their sound.

Sonically, Throneless here sound fucking huge and you’d be mistaken to think this is a three guitar attack, with such dense, chewy fuzz and layered guitars. There’s a great organic ‘live' feel to the record too which puts you inside the room with the band, most probably alone, and in the dark...

They’ve captured a real brooding menace that seeps its presence across every track, epitomised by the distant howls of the vocals. Like a long, dark, cold Scandinavian winter, there’s a gloomy shadow which casts long over this record. There are moments when I wanted to hear a bit more of the drop-out parts where the clean sounds build again to drown you in a huge wave of sound, but that’s a minor quibble.

This is a solid debut which will earn Throneless fans into the likes of Ufomammut, Bongripper, Conan and Yob, and offers enough to suggest that they will explore new ground in the future for the genre. But it can’t get any heavier than this, can it...?

Throneless are:

Johan Burman - drums
Johan Sundén - guitar
Patrik Sundberg - bass

New Band To Burn One To: Oak

Heavy, greasy, thick slabs of hard rocking stoner grooves from London four-piece Oak are massaging our guts today with their self-titled record hitting you full-force in the nut sack with a 2x4. The four tracks on offer are covered in nasty whisky-soaked vocals, as hoarse as they are sexy, and guitar riffs that are heavy enough to punch a hole in the earth. Massive things could well be coming from these guys in the future, we think you’ll hear it coming before we do! Check out the band’s Bandcamp for the record.

Song of the Day-Palm Desert-"Shoutstone"

"Shoutstone" is one of 4 new songs off of the re-release of "Adayoff + 4 Songs". The album was originally released in 2013 but the band is set to release it as a limited edition Blood Red vinyl on or around November 30, 2015 via HeviSike Records. This song is a great addition to an already stellar release. It expands upon the groove heavy desert rock riffage that has made Palm Desert a top notch imprint on the Stoner Rock scene. Song of the Day-Big Bad-"Fuzzed Up"

"Fuzzed Up" is taken off of the new self-titled full-length release. A few things about this band that are for damn sure...they like fuzz, they like riffs, and they like to rock, and this song is no exception. This song is a no-brainer. Jump into your seventies muscle car of choice, roll down the windows and crank this shit up! Blacktop fuzz you up, blacktop fuzz you up...don't believe me just watch (Sorry, I couldn't resist). For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Song of the Day-Moon Curse-"Vicious Sky"

"Vicious Sky" is taken off of the upcoming release "Spirit Remains" due out November 30, 2015 on Kozmik Artifactz Records. Foot-stomping fuzzed-out riff obsessed dudes paying homage to the likes of Black Sabbath amongst others. This song is meant to be played at a loud volume and nothing more, albeit in a psychedelic haze of billowing smoke. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Song of the Day-Mother Mooch-"Misery Hill"

"Misery Hill" is taken off of the band's latest release "Nocturnes". Some of you may have caught on to the band earlier this year with their killer 3-song sampler release "Preludes". Well, the full-length has finally arrived and it does not disappoint. Many would tend to lump the band into the female-fronted occult rock trending right now, but I think otherwise. The band has a "classic rock" sound that blends many different styles from heavy psych to 90's grunge. If you ask me, I think the vocal sounds a bit like Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders, which is a good thing. That artwork is astonishing! Song of the Day-Raedon Kong-"Invasion of Minds"

"Invasion of Minds" is taken off of the latest full-length release "Critical Paths" out now on Hell Comes Home Records. On this song, the two-piece from Louisiana shred with sludgy post-metal layering, proggy experimentation, heavy amounts of fuzz and a raging battle cry.  For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Song of the Day-Ape Machine-"Under This Face"

"Under This Face" is taken off of the upcoming new album "Coalition of the Unwilling" due out soon on Heavy Psych Sounds. This is a straight-forward rocker that represents the band in all aspects. Heavy, fuzzed-out riff-driven freak out with brawny vocals, rampant drumming, odd time signatures and ear-grabbing melody. Love this band!  For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp | Pre-sale

Song of the Day-Endless Taile-"Lazer Face"

"Lazer Face" is taken off of the band's latest 4-song EP release "Telemetry". This song glides along with a breezy sway and hard-driving hypnotic rhythm. The band mates channel their collective soul with tons of fuzzy tone and endless stoner rock groove. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

LP Review: Dying Surfer Meets His Maker by All Them Witches

“Call Me Star” soothes the soul and invites the listener into Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, the newest recording by Nashville’s own, All Them Witches. You can almost see the band playing their acoustic instruments on the front porch overlooking the Tennessee Valley. But don’t be fooled by the backwoods, mellow vibe on the opening track. All Them Witches delivers on both atmospheric beauty as well as driving riffs.

The Witches are Charles Michael Parks, Jr. on vocals and bass, Ben McLeod on guitar, Allan Van Cleave on keys and Robby Staebler on drums. From their Facebook page, “Heavy, heady and hypnotic, All Them Witches concoct a powerful and potent psychedelic sound that fuses bluesy soul, Southern swagger and thunderous hard rock.”

With obvious influences ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Kyuss, these guys take the soundscape and extend it beyond convention. “El Centro” leads with a mesmerizing riff and feeds a spooky dynamic while “Dirt Preachers” brings a more straight-up hard rock vibe. “This is Where it Falls Apart” will remind you of the loose, bluesy jams of the Allman Brothers while “Mellowing” has more of a “No Quarter”/Led Zeppelin feel. “Blood and Sand” closes the record with a seven-minute-plus heavy jam that will leave you wanting more.

Dying Surfer Meets His Maker is a fundamentally diverse and polished recording that somehow still captures the vibrant essence of the open jam. All Them Witches deliver an exotic mix of experiences that are so interesting that you’ll want to spin the record over and over again, listening for the little gems you missed on the previous pass.

Dying Surfer Meets His Maker is now available from the band’s website and you can listen to cuts in the usual places, including the Bandcamp embed at the top of this review. As of fall 2015, All Them Witches is on tour so make sure you get to a show. I’ll see you there.

Song of the Day-Famyne-"Tower"

"Tower" is taken off of the band's debut 3-song EP "Famyne". This song is a hair-raising homage to traditional doom with riffs so heavy that even the goosebumps on your skin are afraid to come out. The vocals are utterly chilling. Consider yourself warned. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

LP Review: He Dreams of Lions by The Heavy Eyes

You know that feeling you get when you’ve been longing for something, so passionately, for such a length of time, that a fear creeps into your conscious that it couldn’t possibly match your expectations? It’s a feeling that’s sadly all too few and far between in appearances, but it’s one that is to cherished. It’s fair to say that we here at Heavy Planet have been waiting with baited breath for Memphis Tennessee’s The Heavy Eyes’ third record to drop, the worry was whether it would meet expectations, but it didn’t, it exceeded it!

2011’s self-titled record laid the foundations for The Heavy Eyes on the heavy blues scene, adding elements of stoner rock into a hazy, riff loaded album which hit us like a freight train. The follow up, 2012’s Maera was an improvement still on the bands already solid foundations, keeping the blues at the forefront of their playing. So where were they to go next? Three years later and the band have found a heavier button than “loud” and used it with a fuzz pedal to make gigantic noises. He Dreams of Lions is a record that drips fuzzy blues riffs through every gap they can find around Tripp Shumake’s greater defined and vibrant vocals, while still being as laid back as the floor.

Opening track ‘Shadow Shaker’ lays the foundations for the album, with pounding drums and heavy, hypnotic guitar riffs, and a driving song structure, galloping the listener forward into a blues future that the band are writing themselves. The song qualifies every genre bracket the band are currently tearing open, showing the direction blues, fuzz, and hard rock could well take. By the time second track ‘Saint’ kicks in to immediate flow, the record has your entire attention as you thrash your head and mosh with yourself over the top of the frenetic riffs and heavy-ass percussion section.

The band have a fantastic ability to write a song, with hooks that’ll make you wet and want to hear all day long (seriously, the riffs are killer). Each song is a well thought-out construction: ‘Old Satlilo Road’ is a layered fuzz fest encouraging you to blast along, ‘He Dreams of Lions’ is a surf rock cum fuzzed stoner pop song, and it’s great to see the band giving it everything they’ve got. ‘Smoke Signals’ shows off the excitement that comes with following the band in all genre formats, and it’s a song which is going to win over many people unfamiliar with the sound.

By the time the record closes with the (yes you’ve guessed it)fuzz heavy blues of the slightly downtuned 'Modern Shells', you realise that you’ve been on a journey with the band, over the course of three albums, a sound which has become louder and more defined for a band who don’t just write great songs, but execute them musically to perfection, and it has led us to He Dreams of Lions, a record which is almost perfect with what it intends to do; rock your balls off! This is a superb album which needs to be in your collection alongside every other quality stoner/fuzz/blues record you cherish.
