New Band To Burn One To: BURWEED

HEAVY PLANET presents...BURWEED!

BAND BIO:

The area of Karhula in South-East Finland is the origin of numerous metal acts such as Omnium Gatherum, Total Devastation, Domination Black, and Demonic Death Judge just to name a few. Musically, however, Burweed dives in the murkier waters introducing a thick atmosphere, a sense of ever-present danger, and ocean-sized melodies to the genre of alternative metal: their brand new EP “Eyes Down South” is a strong display of this.

The first foundations of Burweed were cast in 2008 when Toni and Eetu began to experiment with post-metallish soundscapes in the legacy of bands such as Neurosis and Callisto. In 2009 the line-up was reinforced with Lauri on drums and a bit later with Sakari Salonen on guitar. Soon the recordings of the self-titled debut EP were on the way. “Burweed”-EP was released in April 2010 and it was immediately recognized by listeners and received gratifying reviews in media. The sound of the EP was described as sad, atmospheric and crushing; yet with glimpses of hope here and there.

After touring in support of their self-titled debut, Burweed has been trimmed into a three-piece band as guitarist Sakari left the band. The new release “Eyes Down South” will mark the first live shows of this new line-up. Working as a trio opened up completely new approaches to songwriting. By writing new material with the trio base in mind, the songs became more versatile, coarse, and, surprisingly, more melodic. It also gave space to more adventurous arrangements, giving more room for each band member to perform. With “Eyes Down South” Burweed has truly found its own voice.

THOUGHTS:

"Wave after wave of crushing riffs unmercifully bludgeon your ears until eventually giving way to a calming lull only giving you time to catch your breath only to get slapped in the face again. This Finnish 3-piece known as Burweed plants an abundance of deeply rooted post-metal sludge into the mind of the listener. Using wonderwall atmosphere and shapeshifting layers of sound, the music settles into a mind-numbing psychedelic experience. Vocals bark amongst the seismic riffing on EP opener "Less To Come" then tears into a fuzzy breakdown eventually leading back into the bone crushing mayhem. The madness continues despite the title of the opening track and does so with reckless abandon eventually culminating into the epic EP closer "Eyes Down South". Take notice because Burweed is a band to watch."

New Band To Burn One To- Gniyrg Gnaarg

The "New Band To Burn One To" today is Gniyrg Gnaarg.

Bio:

"Hello. We are Gniyrg Gnaarg. You can pronounce it in any way you wish, and it means absolutely nothing. Well, other than being the name of a ferocious troll.

What do you get when you combine doom, grunge and stoner? The answer is Dungeon. We play dungeon.

The idea of creating a dungeon band was sprung up in the minds of native Helsinkians Tommy and Leo in the early summer of 2008, probably at one of the many bars in Kallio, Helsinki. The band remained a brainchild of the two bassists (one of which had never touched a bass in his life) for over a year, until one night in early september when we found out that Inés, a Kallio-based spaniard, wanted an excuse to reincarnate the drummer inside of her. A band was born."

A Few Words:

Gniyrg Gnaarg is as unique as their name suggests. Citing influences ranging from the likes of Black Sabbath (esp. Master of Reality), Kyuss, Electric Wizard, early Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Fu Manchu, Joy Division and several 60/70s hard rock/psychedelic bands the band lumbers through four doomy tortured psych jams on their latest CD "From Mother Sun". As each song clocks in at over 9 minutes plus, the music has a nice flow and exudes pure evil. Self-proclaiming their style of music as "dungeon" , that is exactly where you feel you are, in a cold, dank dungeon with no hope of escape. Some may say that the vocals are rather weak, I feel that they are perfect for their style of music as they sound as if one has lost all hope and is crying out in pain. This genre of music is not for everyone, but for those that do enjoy it, this is a fine debut.

Tracklist:

1. Awaiting the Sunlight (10:20)
2. Enter the Dungeon (10:02)
3. Earth Fire (10:56)
4. Big Bang (9:14)

New Band To Burn One To-Stream Of Sorrow

The "New Band To Burn One To" today is Stream Of Sorrow.

Stream Of Sorrow (S.O.S.), is a Finnish stoner rock band. The band originally started out as Occupied, and formed sometime in 2006. The band started out playing a Nu-metal style. As the band progressed as musicians, they ditched the nu-metal crap, changed their band name and moved on to a more rock-like direction. Stream Of Sorrow formed in 26.2.08 (accurate date). So far they've had gigs here and there and recorded a lot of demos.

The dudes from Finnish band Stream Of Sorrow blast their way through your speakers with a fuzzed out groove inflicted brand of psychedelic desert rock. Tracks such as "Burnin' Up", "Fever", and "The Trip" are pretty killer. It will be interesting to see where the band goes from here. Keep an ear out for them. The band has made a link available for free download of their latest collection of songs.

New Band To Burn One To-Vinum Sabbatum

The "New Band To Burn One To" today is Vinum Sabbatum.

"For the last few years the late 60's and early 70's Hard Rock experience has been getting revisited by literally hundreds of bands, most of them have created some real quality music while a few have been doing nothing much more than simply jumping upon some kind of Psychedelic bandwagon. Another band that has seemed to hitched its wagon to the Psychedelic era is Finnish retro-rockers Vinum Sabbatum who have signed a 3 album deal with Eyes Like Snow Records which has made a name for themselves by specializing in various fields of Doom, Classic Heavy Rock/Metal and Psychedelic Rock. This limited edition digipak release is a 5 track demo but with the production of a official release and overall its a good 26 minutes of Psyched out Doomy Rock in the late 60's/early 70's vein. They have already been given the Doom Metal tag by some which to me seems a bit misleading as for the most part this band is more in-tune with the sounds of Atomic Rooster than Black Sabbath not that there is anything wrong with that." - Doommantia

My 2 Cents:

If your music tastes lean more towards 70's hard rock a la Uriah Heep, Atomic Rooster, Grand Funk, etc. then you should give this band a listen. The band throws in a few doomy riffs here and there for good measure. Keep an ear out for these Finnish psychedelic groove doomsters.
