ZOROASTER, THE GATES OF SLUMBER, SERPENTCULT To Team Up For North American Tour

Avant-garde psych metal band ZOROASTER, Indianapolis doom metal trio THE GATES OF SLUMBER and Belgian "über doom" unit SERPENTCULT will team up for the "North America is Doomed" tour this summer. The 14-city trek will kick off on August 1 in Chicago, Illinois and will hit major markets, including New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Cleveland, Toronto and Montreal.

Already being called "one of the most anticipated underground metal packages of 2009," the tour spotlights three of metal's most talked about new bands and will be headlined by ZOROASTER, the Atlanta-based group who has most recently been turning heads with its new album, "Voice of Saturn". Fresh from a number of high-energy gigs at SXSW 2009 and a headlining appearance at the inaugural Scion Rock Fest alongside like-minded peers HIGH ON FIRE, MASTODON and NEUROSIS, ZOROASTER continues to bring its revered live show — described as "an obliteration of the senses" — to every city it can.

Special guests on the tour include THE GATES OF SLUMBER, whose high-potency live performances have garnered serious word-of-mouth kudos and built it a cult following amongst the die-hard traditional metal/doom community and the Belgian band SERPENTCULT, whose massive sound, self-described as a "neck-breaking, down tuned riffing apocalypse," has drawn parallels to CELTIC FROST, CATHEDRAL and ELECTRIC WIZARD and met with much critical acclaim within underground metal circles.

ZOROASTER guitarist/vocalist Will Fiore states, "This tour is going to be so heavy, it's scary! Each and every show is going to feature an amazing night of massive riffs, so come out and get lost. This is going to hurt…in all the right ways."

"North America Is Doomed" tour dates:

Aug. 01 - Chicago, IL - The Metal Shaker
Aug. 02 - Lansing, MI - Mac's Bar
Aug. 03 - Toronto, ON - Wreck Room
Aug. 04 - Ottawa, ON - Rainbow Bistro
Aug. 05 - Montreal, QC - Katacombes
Aug. 06 - Danbury, CT - Billy Baloney's
Aug. 07 - Boston, MA - O'Brien's
Aug. 08 - Baltimore, MD - Talking Head Club
Aug. 09 - New York, NY - The Studio at Webster Hall
Aug. 10 - Philadelphia, PA - Kung Fu Necktie
Aug. 11 - Pittsburgh, PA - Howler's Café

ZOROASTER: New Song Featuring MASTODON's HINDS Available For Download

Avant-garde psych-metal trio ZOROASTER has completed work on its new album, "Voice of Saturn". The follow up to "Dog Magic" is scheduled for release on March 10 via Terminal Doom Records. The track "White Dwarf", taken from the upcoming CD, premiered online today via Brooklyn Vegan. Check out the song, which features a searing guitar solo and backing vocals from fellow Atlanta rocker Brent Hinds of MASTODON, at this location.

ZOROASTER will launch a U.S. tour in support of "Voice of Saturn" tonight in Hickory, North Carlina. The trek will include an appearance at the Scion Rock Fest on February 28 in Atlanta, where the band will share the stage with like-minded acts NEUROSIS, HIGH ON FIRE, BORIS and more.

Recorded at The Living Room (THE BLACK LIPS, MASTODON) in Atlanta with engineer Ed Rawls, "Voice of Saturn" pushes ZOROASTER's heady mix of mammoth metal and psychotropic shoegaze to skyscraping new heights. From the galloping post-SABBATH rock of the roll out track "Spirit Molecule" to the concrete street cleaning of "Lamen of the Master Therion" and through to the tribal percussive vertebrae of the album's "hidden" closer, "Voice of Saturn" administers in-the-red levels of both the band's mysticism and barbarism in spades. The record features a guest appearance from friend and fellow Atlantean Brent Hinds of MASTODON, who contributes a searing guitar solo to the song "White Dwarf".

ZOROASTER, who has been called "one of the U.S.'s most promising underground metal bands," formed in Atlanta in 2003 out of the need for "sedation by high volumes and low frequencies." The group has met to shining praise from both metal and indie rock press alike since its formation, receiving accolade for its deafening power, use of left-of-center instrumentation (which has included Moog synths, theremins, ominous vocal choirs and even brass sections) and unique take on heavy music. ZOROASTER features a live show that has been described as "an obliteration of the senses," earning the three piece the title of "Atlanta's loudest band."

When asked for a comment on "Voice of Saturn", ZOROASTER guitarist/vocalist Will Fiore stated, "With 'Voice of Saturn', we've continued to expand on our sound, while still keeping that heavy base we started with. The new album is another step in our ongoing evolution."

As some of you may know already, Zoroaster has begun working on their follow up full length album, Voice of Saturn. After locking them selves in a cabin for a week in the middle of the northern mountains of Georgia, they are putting the finishing touches on the songs. Hopefully Voice of Saturn will be out in early fall.

Zoroaster`s previous album, Dog Magic, was released last year on Battle Kommand Records.

Album Of The Day-Zoroaster-"Dog Magic" (2007)

The Album Of The Day is "Dog Magic" by Zoroaster.

Reviews:

The Atlanta-based band's follow-up, Dog Magic, starts off practically thrashing with the ornery “The Book,” but there's still that tangible aspect to Zoroaster's music. Whether they amp it up or slow it to an ungodly crawl, it's fiercely oppressive. It's also a lot more expressive – there's more to Zoroaster than just the usual trappings of the genre. Actually, “intense” is probably the best way of describing Dog Magic. It's one of those sonic whallops to the side of the head. You'll never recover from it, and you better believe you'll never forget it."(Arzgarth, StonerRock.com)

Dog Magic is a full-on art move by erstwhile doom metal merchants Zoroaster. The Atlanta trio has always had an artsy, proggy edge to its Melvins-inspired sludge, but the epic Dog Magic turns the corner from slow-as-molasses thud-rock to something entirely different. The hugely long songs (half of the six tracks break the ten-minute mark) stagger back and forth between riff-heavy thrash and ominous low-register hums punctuated by Dan Scanlan's monolithic drum thwacks. But the edges of these songs are filigreed with unexpected textures like spacy sci-fi theremins and burbling vintage synthesizers, group vocal parts that sound like the indistinct chanting of shadowy, disreputable monks, and — most unexpectedly — woozy brass parts that sound like a Balkan brass band being tortured in the very bowels of Hades. In other words, rather than the cartoony venom of most contemporary metal, Zoroaster have graduated into something closer to the epic post-rock of heavy but cerebral acts like Mono and Godspeed You Black Emperor! Is there such a thing as post-metal? There may be now. (Stewart Mason, AMG)

Track Listing:

02. Brazen Bull (Free MP3)
