LP Review: 'Restarter' by Torche

Restarter explodes straight into “Annihilation Affair” just to remind us all that Torche is back. With a driving, sharp riff and droning vocals, the band that has become so hard to categorize again defies labels. Fans of metal, stoner rock, shoegaze and sludge lay claim to Torche and they’re all legit. With three full albums and a handful of EPs, Torche is a band on the cusp of becoming one of the premiere heavy bands of the past decade. The current lineup includes founding members Steve Brooks, Jonathan Nuñez and Rick Smith joined by Andrew Elstne.

Restarter doesn’t let you rest. From the driving beat of “Bishop in Arms” to the hooky melody of “Blasted,” Torche thankfully doesn’t stray far from their heavy, melodic compositions. Every song is a gem with nary a filler tune in sight. Don’t bother buying the individual songs. Opt for the entire album and you won’t be disappointed.

And if you thought Torche was just a band, think again. They are also out to save the world (or at least Miami) from bloodthirsty robots in their homage to classic 16-bit video gaming, TORCHE VS ROBOTS. Pick a band member and set off to collect orbs, annihilate robots and save us all – to the tune of “Annihilation Affair,” of course.

Restarter comes out on February 24th and is available for pre-order from the band’s website - http://www.torchemusic.com/.

Torche continues to deliver highly refined yet organic, heavy music. They know what their fans want and they deliver it – with earbleeding intensity. Restarter is already on my list for best albums of 2015.

LP Review "Estron" by Slomatics

Ireland's Slomatics have been around since 2004 and in that time they have put out numerous releases and have appeared on splits with the likes of Conan. Their fourth full length LP "Estron" shows that Belfast born Slomatics are easily as heavy as any of the heaviest bands you are ever likely to hear. Slomatics are bone breakingly low-end and have mastered the art of boiling their riffs down into simple yet extremely heavy weight drones that give a few nods to Torche/Floor in a rumbling earthquake of bomb strings.

The 7 tracks that make up "Estron" give you little time to catch your breath from the chest crushing freqs that are delivered in punishing waves of massive and explosive doom riffs, except that is for the 6th track "Red Dawn" which serves as a kind of retreat from the storm of pulverizing heaviness. That is not to say that every track on "Estron" is a relentless barrage of lowness as there are captivating moments of psychedelic droning atmospheres and experimental use of effects and synthesizers that show Slowmatics are about far more than just playing the biggest and heaviest riffs that 3 humans can possibly produce together without causing serious injury to themselves and anyone who is listening. "Estron" is very close to being dangerously heavy and this is at the core of Slomatics' sound but the futuristic psychedelic sound-scapes produced by these 3 Irishmen make this album one of the most enjoyable listening experiences so far this year.

New Band To Burn One To: NIXA

HEAVY PLANET presents...NIXA!

BAND BIO:

We just recorded a live demo at Pinecrust studio in Miami (Ryan Haft of Capsule and Jonathan Nunez of Torche tracked, mixed and mastered it) and are getting ready to start playing out soon. You might recognize our vocalist Valentin Maelstrom from a Swedish band called Deathwolf who shares members with the black metal band Marduk. I also play drums in a post hardcore band called Secret Arms which has been reviewed quite a bit. Our bassist and guitarist have been in multiple bands from Long Island, NY down to Miami. We are currently writing and rehearsing for recordings and shows.

Members:
Valentin Mellstrom-vocals
Anthony Mendolia-guitar
Mike Rodriguez-drums
Andrew Herrero-Bass

THOUGHTS:

"Well, there goes my speakers...THIS is some really HEAVY shit, and when I say heavy, I mean heavy. South Florida riff-merchants Nixa wrap a chain around their burly fist and punch you right in the jaw with this two song sludgefest. This is not music for the weak of heart as is evidenced by the first track "Bound in Troth". From the first riff and high hat bashing you are firmly planted into the muddy swamp with a fuzzy and crawling tempo. The creepy overtones and chilling vocal harmony gives off a black metal vibe, but that adds to the mood the band has set out to achieve. The skull-bashing continues amongst a flurry of volcanic drum fills and a murky haze on the second track called "Superior". The vocals on this track lean more towards the hardcore variety and is filled with more ambience and dynamics. The riff is absolutely devastating. This two-song demo did exactly what it intended to do...leave the listener wanting more!

LP Review - Take The Potion by ROMERO

ROMERO are a 3 piece hailing from Madison, WI, and with "Take the Potion", their debut LP, they come with 7 tracks packed with hugely pleasing and mightily infectious Stoner metal consisting of thick pungent riffs, low down doomy sludge, raw heavy rock energetics, passionately shouted post hardcore style vocals alongside harmonious outpourings and smart drumming played with a precision that drives the songs on here in a blazing fury of out and out Stoner metal mastership.

From the opening track of "Compliments & Cocktails" with its Torche inspired catchiness, balls-out riffage and drizzles of Hammond for good measure, ROMERO show from the outset that they are no noobz to the stoner metal game. With an entrance like this ROMERO make their presence immediately known making them impossible to ignore and I can only apologize to these 3 gents for not jumping on their brilliant album sooner.

Following is "Couch Lock" with a trad-doom nod and post hardcore vocals adding an element of freshness to their sound but soon enough the heavy rock is added to the furnace leaving this track oozing with a blend of smelted white hot metal.

"One Means Four" is a near post-metal monolith from the off but soon develops into an anthemic riff laden Stoner metal monster without losing a touch of a Neurosis tinged organic mysticism and solemn introspection that this track delivers in thick waves of spine tingling pleasure.

The album's title track of "Take the Potion" falls upon you in a fist clenched and air punching Clutch-like barrage of groovy riffs that are broken up with melodic sections that don't dwell too long before a continuous amping up of the riffs hit you full force in the chest leaving you breathless.

"Distraction Tree" brings us back to a Torche inspired sound showing that ROMERO are big fans, but they are by no means imitators. Plunging down-tuned sludge metal digs around the depths before another anthemic monster surges forward at a tearing pace to bring the track into a many levelled slice of audio art which is my favorite of the 7 tracks on offer.

"Wheeling Deervish" continues with a nod to Kyuss and a spaced out desert groove mixed with growling sludge and howled vocals. The Hammond is wheeled out again towards the end of the track adding some welcome funk to the sludge.

Last is "In the Heather" that lays on a jam that reminds me of Colour Haze at the beginning but soon turns into the baked riffs of Sleep that build to yet more anthemic and blinding Stoner metal brilliance leaving me gasping for air and desperate for more.

This is a truly epically solid debut album from ROMERO and it is available now from their bandcamp, name your price for the digital download, $6.66 \m/ for the CD and $16.66 for the vinyl.

Toby's Top Ten of 2012

Well here we are again at the precipice of a new year, which of course means that it’s time to reflect on the past 12 months and ponder those albums that evoked the most emotion within each of us. As you read through these “best of 2012” lists, you’ll undoubtedly notice a variety of artists and albums from each member of the Heavy Planet staff. And that my friends, is a good thing. In fact, it’s what I love so much about music and why I find it to be such a beautiful thing…the sheer variety to be found in it…its openness to interpretation…and most of all, the art of it. Keep in mind that even though these are all amazing collections of music that I thoroughly recommend checking out, this list should be taken with a grain of salt as it would likely look completely different if I put it together tomorrow. With that, I give you my greatest hits from 2012.

10) Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight – Going Home

On Going Home, this UK three-piece delivered a massive slab of fuzz n roll that featured captivating melodies, powerful vocals, crunchy guitars and…trumpets? Yep, just when you thought the album’s eight minute title track couldn’t get any more epic, Trippy Wicked broke out the horns (mellotron?) and elevated their sound from standard, everyday riff-rock to the type of soaring, metal anthems that have been known to induce goose-bumps in many a listener. Whether it was the intense vibe of songs like “Up the Stakes” and “Go Outside” or the more carefree odes to self medication that made up the album’s mid-section, the band displayed a unique knack for mixing bluesy grit with low end groove and the result was an album that drilled its way into my cranium and stayed there throughout 2012.

9) Band of Skulls - Sweet Sour

I figure I'll probably get all sorts of shit for this one, but I can't lie to you, I was mesmerized by the mixture of heavy blues and sticky sweet harmonies that this UK trio laid down on Sweet Sour. In fact, I'm kind of shocked that the "indie rock" community has seemingly embraced this band while the "stoner rock" faithful have largely ignored them. Maybe I'm missing something, but fuck it…I dig this shit. You can hear what I mean on the title track, which opens the album with a guitar lick reminiscent of Hendrix and builds in intensity into a full-on blooze-fest. "Bruises" opens with an admittedly poppy male/female sing along, but transitions into a straight-up head nodding, foot stomping rock song. "Wanderluster" is similar in it's build up and when it hits its stride, you'd be lying if you said you weren't moving to it. But it's the riffs that ultimately landed Band of Skulls in my top 10 of 2012. Just check out "The Devil Takes Care of His Own", "Lies" or the final couple of minutes of "Lay My Head Down" and you'll see…yeah you'll see.

8) Orange Goblin – A Eulogy for the Damned

Another UK band, the mighty Orange Goblin finally resurfaced this year and unleashed album number seven after what seemed like an eternity since we’d last heard from them. Beginning with the buzz saw guitars and thunderous rhythm section of “Red Tide Rising”, Ben Ward and company wasted no time reintroducing us to the psychedelic biker metal that’s helped to build the Goblin a legion of fans over the last fifteen plus years. From the galloping riffs of “The Fog” to the soulful, southern rock of “Save Me from Myself”, Eulogy was like listening to Skynyrd riff on Sabbath after a night of binge drinking. Throw in a dose of experimentation, like on “Return to Mars” where the band grooves out enough to almost be considered funky and vocals that sound like a boozed up Lemmy after gargling with broken glass, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a record.

7) Deftones - Koi No Yokan

Some will likely argue that Deftones have no business being on a top ten list of the best stoner, doom, sludge and psychedelic rock albums of the year. I would counter that their noisy experimentations with everything from nu-metal to post-metal and from drone to shoegaze makes them a perfect candidate for what we do here at Heavy Planet. Furthermore, after surviving possibly the worst casualty a band can undergo (their original bassist Chi Cheng has yet to fully recover from a 2008 car accident that left him comatose), Deftones retooled with Sergio Vega of Quicksand fame, released the phenomenal 2010 album Diamond Eyes and toured with the likes of Baroness, Alice in Chains and Mastodon. If none of that whets your appetite for Koi No Yokan, then go ahead and skip ahead to number six. Songs like "Romantic Dreams" and "Poltergeist" feature overwhelmingly heavy riffs and crisp drumming combined with vocalist Chino Moreno's signature blend of aggressive screeching and blissful crooning. And songs like "Swerve City" and "Tempest" keep the riffs monolithic while introducing an ethereal, Cure-like feel to the album. Going on twenty-five years as a band, Deftones continue to push the envelope and reinvent themselves and with Koi No Yokan, they stay well within the heavy music spotlight and are well deserving of a spot on this list.

6) Greenleaf – Nest of Vipers

It’s hard to believe that Greenleaf started as a side-project of sorts for various members of the Swedish bands Dozer and Truckfighters. The lineup has changed since their inception, but this incarnation still maintains former members of both bands and after hearing Nest of Vipers, we can only hope that this "project" has become their priority. Paying homage to the likes of Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple and even Zeppelin (tell me that guitar solo on "Dream Catcher" doesn't remind you of Jimmy Page) while staying true to the desert rock sound that originally put each of these guys on the map, Greenleaf have created a true gem with Nest of Vipers. It doesn't get much better than album opener "Jack Staff" where the guitars are the musical equivalent of cotton candy, the percussion a symphony of rolling toms and crash cymbals and the vocals a display of range and register all the while staying appropriately buried in the overall mix. From moody and atmospheric ("Tree of Life") to radio ready alt-rock ("Sunken Ships"), Greenleaf leaves no stone unturned, no matter how small.

5) King Giant - Dismal Hollow

It's a tribute to how good Dismal Hollow is that it was released way back in January 2012 and now, a year later, it still finds a well deserved place on this list. Essentially laying the foundation for King Giant's music is the land they call home, which happens to be the Appalachian foothills of Virginia. The album melds a slew of harrowing tales, including Civil War battles, vengeful victims of spousal abuse and old Southern bootleggers with bluesy dual guitar work, a gut busting rhythm section and vocals raspier than your granddad after a pack of smokes. Dismal Hollow puts Virginia on the southern metal map kind of like Crowbar, Down and their ilk did for NOLA. After the release of this album, the band was hit with a streak of bad luck as both guitarists suffered violent injuries in unrelated incidents that essentially rendered the band out of commission for most of the year. Here's to a healthier 2013 for King Giant and to finally getting the slow southern steel that is Dismal Hollow out on the road.

4) Summoner - Phoenix

Boston's Summoner (formerly Riff Cannon) play a wonderfully loud blend of doom, stoner and psychedelic on their latest album Phoenix and it is not to be missed. Dual guitars that simultaneously interweave heavy-as-fuck riffing with dreamy noodling (check out "Winged Hessians") combine with thunderous drums, pummeling bass and throat wrenching vocals. The band stops and starts on a dime (see "Conjuring") and they aren't afraid to experiment with tempo shifts and a variety of dynamics within any one particular song. Furthermore, Summoner can kick your ass quickly, such as "The Interloper" which fires out of the gates…well…like a cannon. Or they can take their time in doing so, like they do on the epic "Let the Light In" which patiently builds, then batters you unmercifully and then evolves into a beautiful coda that carries the song through its nine minute run time. Look, when I found out Heavy Planet would be hosting a CMJ Showcase in New York City in 2012, it only took one listen of this masterpiece before I extended an invitation for Summoner to play it. That's probably all you need to know about Phoenix.

3) Witchcraft - Legend

It's been five years since we last heard from Sweden's Witchcraft and in that time they've shaken up their lineup (only two of the five band members return from 2007's The Alchemist) and more importantly they've re-tooled their sound. Seemingly tired of the "new wave of analog-rock" that they practically invented with their self-titled debut back in 2004, Witchcraft went in a new direction with Legend and the result was a crisp, clean and refreshing album that threw a noticeable twist in the band's impressive legacy. Unlike previous albums, this one features overtly catchy riffs (see "Deconstruction"), lyrical content dealing with "real world" issues (see "Democracy") and a mind blowing dual guitar attack (see "An Alternative to Freedom"). I understand that some people are disappointed with the new direction…aren't they always…but if you'd prefer the pseudo-vintage sound of the band's past, there are plenty of other artists dabbling in that genre for you to fall back on. Witchcraft on the other hand have decided to eschew convention and to strike out in a new direction. I find that incredibly admirable and I found Legend in my constant rotation in 2012.

2) Baroness - Yellow & Green

Speaking of catchy…and speaking of defying convention…Baroness completely blew the doors off of expectations with their latest effort, Yellow & Green. In this instant gratification, pay what you want/steal if you can't society, who the fuck puts out a near flawless double album? I don't want to go overboard here, but this thing is quite frankly like stoner rock's version of The Wall. Divided into two equally impressive halves, Yellow & Green is extensive, it's gratifying…it's phenomenal. Baroness have completely evolved from the little, old Savannah, Georgia sludge metal quartet that we once knew into a progressive and wholly interesting rock band. If Witchcraft evolved "their" sound on Legend, then Baroness evolved the sound of rock music as a whole with Yellow & Green. Songs like "Take My Bones Away" and "Board Up the House" will literally have you singing along while pondering their meaning. With that said, there's a sense of melancholy permeating this entire body of work (listen to "Twinkler" or "Eula") a sort of ethereal sadness. But emotions are the truest inspiration for art and what emotion is more powerful than pain? With Yellow & Green, Baroness have created music that makes you think, it makes you long for something and most importantly, it makes you feel. That's what good music (and all good art) is supposed to do and that makes Yellow & Green infinitely successful.

1) Torche - Harmonicraft

And that brings me to my number one record of 2012. Similar to Baroness, Miami, Florida's Torche have written an album chock-full of hooks, sing-along choruses and other contagious musical moments that will have you returning to have your head bashed time and again. The difference here is that Harmonicraft strips away the instrumental mood pieces (the lone exception being the riff infested title track) in favor of a lean, mean approach that clocks in at under 40 minutes. Not a second is wasted here and the band's signature sound, which is often described as "sludge pop"…cute…is apparent after the first five minutes wherein you'll have already experienced the album's first two tracks. Songs like "Snakes Are Charmed" and "Kiss Me Dudely" sound like Helmet jamming with the Melvins on some Beach Boys tunes…heavy, slow and so damn catchy it'll have you puking rainbows (speaking of which…did you see the excellent cover artwork?). Want atmosphere? Look no further than "Solitary Traveler" which bares down on you like the weight of the world. I can't quite describe to you how I feel or what I take from the latest Torche LP, I just know that I can't stop listening to it and that's why it deserves this spot on my list. Perhaps the band themselves best described their sound with the made up word that they chose for the album's title. Harmonicraft indeed.

New Band To Burn One To: THUNDERBEAR

HEAVY PLANET presents . . . THUNDERBEAR!

Band Bio:

Thunderbear is a 3 piece sludge/doom metal band based out of Wilmington, MA. We are heavily influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Sleep, Kyuss, High on Fire, Torche, and really any band from the stoner/sludge/doom genre. We formed in 2009 under various different names, and actually started as a classic rock cover band, which changed once we discovered Sleep and decided to start to write songs in C tuning and make them slow and heavy. We have been jamming with heavy riffs and exploring the endless possibilities within the genre. We began listening to bands like High on Fire and the sludge/doom metal scene and began to explore those realms as well.

Thunderbear consist of:

John Grealish - Bass, Vocals
Peter Ammon - Guitar
Aristide Palm - Drums

THOUGHTS:

I love Thunderbear's BIO. They began as a cover band of classic rock standards until they stumbled across the shadowy underground world of sludge/doom/stoner music. Okay, I've embellished it a bit, but this tells a story familiar to many who frequent our awesome site, or who are purveyors of this wonderful music. We all love rock, and we love it on the heavy side, and once stoner/doom/sludge music is discovered we are hooked for eternity. Thunderbear made the change from covering music to making music, such was their inspiration. And make it they do, very well. They have stayed with one cover on this EP, the assumption being it is their favorite, their most inspiring song, Sleep's "Dragonaut", but the original tunes on this EP are very well constructed and equally as well executed, adept and forceful in delivery. Grealish's vocals are magnificently suited to this style of music. Ammon's guitar, both in solo and in riff refrain are tribal and severe. Palm's drums and Grealish's bass are huge, frenetic, and thoroughly enjoyable. There are hooks, there is melody, there is heart, and there is a fresh, honest, worthy addition to the type of music lovers of Sleep, Black Sabbath . . . Hell, all of Stonerville, Doomasschusetts crave.

Stallone: The Heavy Planet Interview

October 30th was the official release date for Stallone's "American Baby", an album we were pleased and excited to review a month previously to the release on September 28th. The excitement came first from learning MonstrO's laser beam axe wielder Juan Montoya was pulling double duty and again taking on the lead guitar role for his 'side job', the new band Stallone. It turns out all members of Stallone have other gigs as musicians in addition to this one. The thing about Stallone is they play sans vocals, something a significant number of Stoner/Doom/Sludge/Psych bands are wont to do. Those instrumental bands all tend to lay down music that is deeply compelling, a sheer joy to experience, and Stallone's debut is no exception. They play hugely and intensely and brilliantly, laying out a multitude of razor tinged riffs that generate a deep and sludgy fuzz, stitched together with a bright laser tapestry of quality sound that propels you along on wings of distortion and intensity.

Heavy planet breathlessly caught up to ultra busy and uber gifted Juan Montoya and C.J. Ridings for a few questions about the affairs of this newly formed rock force:

HP: "American Baby" was just released this past week on October 30th. Do you have any indication what type of interest or reception this album will generate?

Juan: This album has plenty of high energy and creativeness for everyone. It is oozing with riffs. It just depends on how we can get it into people's hands.

HP: Stallone are an instrumental band, no one sings. Who were/are your main instrumental influences, especially those from the Stoner/Doom world?

Juan: The older Black Sabbath instrumentals were unique and very odd and were a big influence. I would say years of listening to Aphex Twin, Trans Am, and John Zorn's Naked City would have been my biggest influences.

HP: Because Stallone are an instrumental band do you feel the songs have to be more interesting, or contain more meat, so to speak, than more traditional songs like those from Juan's other band, MonstrO?

Juan: Good question. As long as there is memorable melody guiding the song, that's what people are going to be moved by. For example, the bell intro to Rush's "YYZ".

HP: Who handles song writing duties for Stallone? How collaborative is the process?

Juan:  We all come in with ideas and throw them into the stew. But it's great when we all get the ball rolling together. We've been lucky to finish some of our best songs in three runs.

HP:  Is the primary method for spreading the word about "American Baby" through touring and live shows?

Juan: Hell yeah! Our show is a must see. Even though we play at high speeds the 'rock show' is there. No standing around looking at our fretboards. We are going to jump on your table, take a swig of your beer, take a quick toke, all while shredding our jams. Haha!

HP: How much do the stoner/doom blog sites such as Heavy Planet and Soda Shop help in getting the word out to the true rock lovers that will enjoy this music?

Juan: The word gets out there, but the bands have to do the leg work. Try to release live vids. People have to get a whiff of your live energy.

HP:  Does anyone other than Juan have a second playing gig?

Juan: All three of my band bros from Stallone are in a band named Big Jesus. They are currently looking for a singer/guitarist. Evan is playing drums on tour with Royal Thunder, who are supporting a new record out on Relapse Records.

HP: Juan, how would you describe the experiences and differences of playing in two bands simultaneously?

Juan: So far it's been working out without too much headache. When MonstO takes breaks from touring I go back to the practice room and keep the creative juices flowing. I barely sleep. I'm at a time in my life where it's Ride or Die, as a good friend put it. I'm involved in both band's artwork, as well as writing, and collaborating on many projects. The only thing that suffers is my home life. It's difficult to be a good boyfriend when your heart is into the arts.

HP: What is Stallone's touring future? Any plans to hit the road in the near future? Have you been touring at all, or just playing locally in Atlanta and surrounding areas?

Juan:  With Stallone we are looking for a booking agent. I want to take the group to Europe, the U.K., and Japan. My mates have to see the wonders of the world as it inspires the soul, leading to great music in the long run.

HP:  CJ has a side gig as a music recorder. He did the mixing for the song "Beyond" on "American Baby". Are there other tracks on the album you mixed?

CJ: Yeah, I actually mixed the whole album. I sat in my room and got all the tracks to a place I thought was close and then we all sat together as a band and did some final tweeks.

HP: How is the recording gig going? Are bands beginning to recognize your work and send music your way?

CJ: I'm starting to get a heavier flow of recording work, little by little. It's all word of mouth, so like a new band, it takes time to get out there. I cut my teeth in my first bands in the Atlanta hardcore/punk scene, so that's who I record a lot, because it's who I know, but I've been getting a few projects from Alabama bands and even as far out as Pittsburgh. I imagine I'll always be working with mostly heavy bands, but I'm starting to get my share of other genres as well, which I love.

So, there you have it folks, a brief glimpse into the glamorous life of the hard working members of Stallone, who quite obviously put in a ton of effort into what they do, and love every bit of the process. "American Baby" is their debut and will rock your face off, but hopefully it'll grow back in time for any subsequent releases from these new and exciting purveyors of Stoner/Doom riffage.

Album Of The Day-Torche-"Meanderthal" (2008)

The Album Of The Day is "Meanderthal" by Torche.

Review:

Metal isn't particularly known for its sense of humor. Yet, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Take for instance Mastodon's intro to the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie. That's pretty damn funny. And the title of Torche's new album, Meanderthal, is worth a chuckle or two, as well. More than a shining bit of wordplay, its etymology seems to suggest a combination of metal's biggest stereotypes, one of primitive brutality and the other of endless wankery. It takes a particularly notable group to have a less heavy-handed outlook on a heavy genre, but that's precisely what makes Torche unique.

With a vast majority of Meanderthal's songs coming in at less than three minutes, and many shorter than two minutes long, Torche swiftly proves themselves to be the antithesis of knuckle-dragging noodlers. A crisp and powerful extension of the dirty grooves and sunny harmonies of their debut, Meanderthal is a prime example of how well metal and pop go together when balanced just right. Too far in one direction, and you're too muddy for a party, but too much of a tilt to the other leaves one at grunge. What Torche does is find that perfect line at which hooks and low end carnage can coexist harmoniously.

The album begins with "Triumph of Venus," the one track in which the band lets their riffs fly into oblivion, but even then, they're circling in formation, never floating aimlessly toward unknown galaxies. With "Grenades," however, frontman Steve Brooks opens his mouth to unleash a mighty baritone over a sludgy and epic melody. It is in this song where the tone for the album is really set, with the group's `doom-pop' sound in full effect. It may be metal in its sonic accoutrements, but it's rock `n' roll at heart.

From there, the Floridian band wastes no time in delivering heavy riffs, grooves and catchy-as-hell melodies at record speeds. "Piraña" is 92 seconds of punk-fueled thrash, charging at full speed but optimized for good times and hedonistic road trips. "Sandstorm," though slower and sludgier, still gets its vicious progression in and out before wearing out its welcome, though another minute wouldn't be any less awesome. "Speed of the Nail" best sums up its careening assault in its title, as this thing is deadly sharp. But "Healer," good lord, what a set of hooks this song has! Those jagged bastards just mercilessly dig in and never let go. Queens of the Stone Age should be so lucky to write a song like this.

"Across the Shields" is even sunnier on the pop side, going for a major key explosion that speaks more of Dinosaur Jr. than Mötörhead. And yet there's "Amnesian," as well, a six-minute epic beast that reveals the group's more expansive side. Torche refuses to be one-dimensional in their approach, to the point where calling it by one genre seems wrong. Never before has a pop song sounded so gargantuan. (Jeff Terich, Treblezine.com)
