Album Review: The Freeks - "Shattered"
Taste is a funny thing. There is a lot of brouhaha coming from Atlanta that baffles me, which, of course, just showcases my own shortcomings I suppose. It does come at a time when I am able to sort of play Atlanta off of Rome, in an untypical way. I go back and forth between the oldest profession and their precious metals of the southern U.S. and those strange but hep cats from the heart of both the Unholy and Holy Roman Empires, The Freeks, and their newly released "Shattered". I find I favor, and love, the Roman outpourings hands down. Here's an opportunity for you to do the same.
A very cool thing about The Freeks is their stoner history. Band front man, Ruben Romano, was a founding member of both Fu Manchu and Nebula. Whoa. He has again surrounded himself with quality, as shown below:
Ruben Romano - Vocals, Lead Guitar (formerly of Fu Manchu, Nebula)
Bob Lee - Drums (formerly of Claw Hammer, Backbiter, Mike Watt)
Tom Davies - Bass (formerly of Nebula)
Esteban Chavez - Keyboards
Jonathan Hall - Guitar (Angry Samoans, Backbiter)
"Shattered" is their third full LP release, again chock full of incredible concoctions of uniqueness and wonder. The blend of styles and sounds is so profound, so varied, so pregnant, you might find from one moment to the next a sense and a snippet of style and sound from any of a dozen rock genres. The Freeks manage to blend these variances into a cohesive blanket of melodic noise, a fuzz stubble quilt of pure astonishment. There is nothing but magnificence on this album, from song construction and rendition, to a binding melodic sense of destiny. It's more than a garage rock, punk rock, stoner rock amalgam. It manages to deliver something that soars on a level above all that, held aloft by their magnetic underpinnings but propelled forward at breakneck speed on a newly composited sound of pure energy and fun. You'll hear something familiar in each song - a snippet of stoner fuzz, a clang of punk rock riffing, a run of psychedelic mind meld, a retro/blues reminiscence - that will initially and immediately pull you in. Once there you'll likely stay as the mesmerizing concoction of it all is a strong and heady brew of intoxifying wonderment.

Full On by The Freeks
I'm going to get this out of the way right now. The members of The Freeks were in other famous bands. This will come up in all the other reviews, and some time will be paid bowing to the alter of the past- but in this review I won't focus on those bands, because what The Freeks are doing now is great and important. This isn't some last ditch effort by musicians hoping to capitalize on the cool they peddled years ago. This is the real deal folks. The band sounds energized, with the grit of the Stooges and the space of Hawkwind and twists that can only be described as freeky.
Full On kicks off with Big Black Chunk, a heavy spaced rager with vocals that lay the framework for the spaced and psychedelic tunes that dominate the album. The next track, Weirdness offers the contrast to the spaced jam the preceded it. The Punkish vox sound like they are straight from Detroit Rock City circa 1968 and wake you up before yer pulled back to space, down The Secret Pathway which could be the soundtrack to a journey through a wormhole in some odd galaxy. Splitting Atoms is a pastoral pysch jam, which could be sung around a campfire on Mars. On a Whim offers stabbing keys and the intense punk vocals of Weirdness, and their appearance is a helluva way to keep you grounded, lest you float off into he ether forever.
This album can't be recommended enough. The spaced jams are free and tight. The punk jams are tight but loose. The whole thing is fun, and if you've been thinking of a way to play your Stooges records at the same time as yer playing your Hawkwing records, just put this one on and save yourself all the trouble that thinking can cause.
And for those of you who are sitting there, pulling out your hair, wondering to yerself "what are those original bands he talking bout?"
Fu Manchu, Nebula, Roadsaw, The Angry Samoans. Now hail The Freeks.
Here's an older tune that shows their Psychedelic proclivities.

Flashback Friday - Nebula

I'm quite sure that most Heavy Planet readers are already well aware of Nebula. But since the band officially called it quits just over a year ago, I figure its high time (see what I did there?) they get their very own Flashback Friday feature. So if you're already familiar with this power trio who seamlessly blended 60's psychedelia, 70's riffage, 80's punk and 90's grunge into a cosmic concoction of stoner rock goodness, then this should be a fun little refresher course. For those of you not familiar with them…prepare to be enlightened.
Nebula got their start back in 1997 when Eddie Glass (guitars/vocals) and Ruben Romano (drums) split from legendary SoCal stoner outfit Fu Manchu to explore their own musical direction. At that time, the Fu's had just released what was, in my personal opinion, their finest album, 1996's In Search Of…. Despite that fact, both Glass and Romano expressed personal and musical differences with Fu head honcho Scott Hill and ultimately decided to head out on their own. The duo teamed up with Mark Abshire (bass), himself a Fu Manchu vet, having played on the band's 1994 debut album No One Rides For Free, and alas Nebula was born.
The newly formed band got right to work on what would become their first EP Let it Burn, which they released in 1998. The songs featured a much more fluid, jam-based, psychedelic sound than the straight up wall of fuzz that was Fu Manchu. And that sound would be expanded upon on two additional EP releases, Sun Creature and a split with fellow stoner rockers Lowrider, both of which were released in 1999. In 2002, both of these EPs would be combined with three new songs and re-released by MeteorCity Records under the name Dos EPs. Before eventual lineup changes began to occur, this original version of the band would also record two full length albums, their 1999 debut To the Center and its 2001 followup Charged. Both are considered by many to be staples in the stoner rock genre as they're chock full of big drums, even bigger riffs, roaring guitar solos, a shitload of feedback and Eddie Glass' super chill vocal style.
But lest you think Nebula was just a studio sensation, I should mention that they were probably best known for their incessant touring, for being true road warriors and for flat out stealing the show from a very impressive roster of headliners. Just ask anyone who had an opportunity to see these guys how visceral the experience was. And the sheer number of shows they played was astounding! From the time of the band's formation in 1997 to the release of Charged in 2001, Nebula had played literally hundreds of shows, sharing the stage with a virtual who's who from the stoner rock, doom and grunge genres…including Clutch, Corrosion of Conformity, Sixty Watt Shaman, The Atomic Bitchwax, Mudhoney and Orange Goblin just to name a few.
Prior to the release of their next album Atomic Ritual, Mark Abshire left the band and was replaced by Simon Moon on the bass. For Ritual, the band enlisted the services of desert rock legend Chris Goss for production duties and the results were fantastic. The album was praised by critics and fans alike, leaving Nebula with no other choice than to take the show back on the road. The Atomic Ritual tour again led to some impressive opening slots, none more notable than the Clutch/Mastodon tour of 2004 (a tour that also included Hidden Hand and Suplecs).
That same year, the band experienced another lineup shift as Moon was replaced on the bass with self-described "English geezer" Tom Davies. 2006 saw the band release another full length album, Apollo, which still maintained the SoCal desert rock essence for which Nebula had become known, but also saw the band delving into more classic 70's rock territory. Gone was the heavy guitar crunch in favor of a more atmospheric sound. More touring followed (of course), including a high profile jaunt through Europe with The Sword.
The following year saw the lineup changes continue, as drummer and founding member Ruben Romano left the band. Fortunately, Rob Oswald of Karma to Burn and Mondo Generator fame quickly stepped in to fill his seat and the new lineup did…what else…tour! Finally, in 2008 Nebula settled back into the studio to record what would ultimately be their final album, Heavy Psych. As the name suggests, this one saw the band delving heavily into psychedelic territory, not something they had altogether shunned in the past, but never their primary focus either.
On the ensuing tour, by the time the band made it as far as Baltimore, Oswald had decided he'd had enough. Being true road warriors and absolutely refusing to cancel a show, Nebula contacted their buddy Adam Kriney that very night about filling in on drums for the rest of the tour. The drummer subsequently packed his kit into a U-Haul trailer and drove overnight from his home in New Jersey to meet the band for their show the very next evening. No less than 24 hours after losing their drummer, Nebula took the stage at The Black Cat in Washington DC as the headliners on a bill that included fellow stoners Naam and psyche rockers The Entrance Band. The date was August 25th, 2009…I know because I was there. As the band walked onstage, Tom Davies quickly informed the crowd of the situation…that instead of canceling the gig, they'd rather struggle through the five or six songs that their new drummer had spent all day (after driving all night) trying to learn, just to make sure their fans got to see what they'd paid to see.
Kriney stuck with Nebula for the rest of the tour…the ultimate pinch hitter in music terms. In February 2010, the band introduced their new permanent drummer Jimmy Sweet, but no more than a month after that announcement, Nebula broke up. I have to say that I've seen more shows in my lifetime than I can even begin to recount and I can think of dozens that were unbelievable, unforgettable and just flat out amazing for various reasons. With that said, never have I seen anything like what I saw back in August of 2009 when Nebula took the stage with an unseasoned drummer…Eddie Glass literally coaching the man through the songs as the band played! That story should tell you all you need to know about Nebula. I'm grateful that I got to witness them in all their glory that one time…even if they were essentially a man down. If you haven't done so already, do yourself a favor and check out what was truly one of the hardest working bands in this genre we call stoner rock.

NEBULA To Release New Album In July
Los Angeles power trio NEBULA, whose cosmic cocktail of heavy riffs, electric blues and psychedelic space rock has earned the band international (and, dare we say, universal) acclaim, has returned to Tee Pee Records and will release its new album, "Heavy Psych", on July 7.
NEBULA released its first album on Tee Pee in 1998 titled "Let It Burn". "Let It Burn" is being reissued on vinyl later this year and will be released as a limited edition double LP, the first LP containing the original "Let It Burn" album plus two bonus tracks and a second LP will contain the original demos from the "Let It Burn" sessions.
The great swirling, electrical ball of dynamism and potential known as NEBULA formed in the mythical abyss of Los Angeles in 1997. In its current incarnation the band is comprised of Eddie Glass (guitar/vocals), Rob Oswald (drums) and Tom Davies (bass/vocals).
NEBULA creates pure guitar-driven, conscious expanding rock for the 21st century and "Heavy Psych" has everything you could want and need to start the ceremony. They are a culmination of their rock forbearers such as JIMI HENDRIX, MC5, THE STOOGES and MUDHONEY turned up a notch, taken to the next level and blasting through space. NEBULA spread their gospel through their music and what they are preaching will leave the congregation on the floor.
Combining the combustibility of the sun with the mysticism of the moon, "Heavy Psych" lives up to its name, no matter your preferred definition, and reaffirms NEBULA's reputation as one of rock's brightest stars — in this galaxy or any other.
"Heavy Psych" track listing:
01. Pulse
02. The Dagger
03. Aphrodite
04. Dream Submarine
05. In The Depths
06. The Other Side
07. Crown Of Thorns
08. Lead Sky
09. Little Yellow Pill
"The Dagger" is available for free download at this location.

Album Of The Day-Nebula-"To The Center" (1999)
The Album Of The Day is "To The Center" by Nebula.

Review:
There's some debate as to the release date of this album on SUBPOP... as in... 'if ever'.
If the powers who are debating the issue could just sssssiitt baaack and zzzzonnnne ouuut with this album, some cushy headphones and one's refreshment of choice-choice-choice-choice-hoice-oice-ce... there would be no questions. Let everything melt away into the tracers and trails of this, one of the best rock albums since "Spine of God".
It took me a short while to understand what they were shooting for, as with the aforementioned masterpiece. Once I GOT it, I was drawn into it. The first four songs blend into a moment of brilliance... I was destroyed before I knew it. Gravity kicked in at an increased level. "Freedom" opens it all back up with a 60's jam (replete with their infamous percussion via Ruben) a la demon-Blues. "Antigone" continues with a large and filthy groove... to the STOOGES cover "I Need Somebody" which (from what I hear) has the illustrious Mark Arm of Mudhoney on vocals. Actually, the feel of the best Stooges and MC5 (and Mudhoney, for that matter) albums permeates every song on this recording. "So Low" brings me to a place somewhere between EASY RIDER and SKYNYRD. "Fields of Psilocybin" has enough tension and melody still to make or break your trip. "Between Time" and "You Mean Nothing" bring it all together with The Riffs of The Album, fuckin' brilliant solos included. The only time that production "tricks" come into play is when they space you right the fuck out. This is raw, even with the acoustic guitar overdubs. The layering serves only to create atmosphere, NOT to polish. In fact, on my first few listens, I was taken aback at what I perceived as a rather rough portrayal of a band I loved. I was worried that they hadn't taken enough time with the whole record. I now hear what made me love Nebula in the first place... emotional jams with strong riffing and NO money-driven bullshit.
In my opinion, this is the epitome of what this fuzzed out genre has become, and should be. While their contemporaries often border safely on mersh metal, this band chooses the dirt-rock approach every time. Stoned and droning, this record is a fucked up freak out, just like I like it.
