Video Premier of Destroyer of Light's "Forbidden Zombi Ritual" with an Interview Thrown in For Good Measure

Since their appearance on the original Bong Hits From the Astral Basement, Austin's Destroyer of Light have slowly and steadily, in true zombie fashion, overrun the underground metal scene. Blending Candlemass wail with well placed death growls, Destroyer of Light bridge the gap between traditional metal and the more extreme sub genres, while wisely never going full cookie monster. I spoke with Steve (guitar/vox/mastermind) about the lineup changes, touring plans, and their new video, which makes its world premier at the bottom of this page.

Justin- Can you tell me about the lineup change? Have you found a new bassist?
Steve- Well, the line-up changed happened because we didn't see eye to eye in what it is to be a touring musician. This is a business to us as we want to get to the point that we can make money on tour and invest a lot into this band. Nothing against Mark, he is a great bassist and hope he continues to play music in other projects, we are still his friends. However, we are entering our second year as a band, and want to take things further than we did since our inception in 2012. As far as a new bassist, we have tried out a couple of guys, and while we haven't made any confirmation on a new bass player, the search has been going well. And I expect that we will be back playing shows by February.

J- Tell me about the new EP. How do you compare it to the previous release?
S- Bizarre Tales Vol. 2 was recorded at the same studio as the Self-Titled, Yellow Dog Studios in Austin, TX. The engineer, Matt Meli, really liked working with us on the first EP, and he wanted to record us again. This time though, we were able to take more time to make sure that we got everything to sound the way we wanted. Some of these songs we wrote way back when we first started, and then a couple of the songs were written right before we decided to record in the studio. On this album too, it features more material that was written more so by Keegan, and then there is a song that was also written by Mark. Where on the first record, I wrote most of the material. So, it's cool because this EP shows how diverse we can be as a band, and presents a different side to us than the S/T. Most of the lyrics are still the same, as they are fictional tales of horror, sci-fi, and the Greeks.

J- The video is cool as hell, who did the animation and put it all together?
S- Thanks! Well, the guy who made the video is Erik Bredthauer, and we posted on our Facebook page looking for someone to do animation for us to promote our new single. He contacted me, and said that he had never done this for a band, but does these kind of projects for work. And as a fan of the band, he wanted to help us out and have fun with the project. So, it was really cool that he wanted to take time out of his day to help us get a pretty cool animation to go along with this song. What we were looking for was a Tales From the Crypt comic style kind of animation. As most of my lyrics delve into horror, and this song is about Zombies, we thought it would be perfect to do that kind of match. I am really happy with it, and can't wait to premiere "Forbidden Zombi Ritual" to the world. The record has been done since October; so, it'll be great to get this out.

J- What are your touring plans and how soon before you get on the road?
S- As of right now, we are discussing when we will be back on the road, but we are going to shoot for early April. First, we need to solidify our new line-up, practice through our new setlist, and another thing we are really looking to do before we tour is release our new EP on vinyl. So, we will be trying to find ways to put out this vinyl because the artwork is fantastic and it would look really good. Plus, the more mercy we can sell on the road, the better.

J- Anything else you want to add?
S- Lastly, I would like to thank everybody for the support so far, we don't plan on stopping anytime soon. If anything, we plan on coming through your town more and more, and have plans for more releases, etc. I hope you enjoy the new song, "Forbidden Zombi Ritual." You can find us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/destroyeroflight), Twitter (dolaustindoom), Instagram, and band camp (www.destroyeroflight.bandcamp.com). Thank you again, and we will see you soon in your town! Cheers!

And now that you are up to speed on the happenings in the Destroyer of Light camp, please enjoy the premier of their new video, "Forbidden Zombi Ritual". Duuuude.

Album Review: Desperate Souls of Tortured Times by Age of Taurus

If you're like me, the album cover of Desperate Souls of Tortured Times by Age of Taurus will trigger something in your leathered brain.Your Candlemass sector will light up, you'll start to think of all those early albums, and salivate. You might not even notice till a half minute later that the name of the band on this album is different and this thing came out in 2013.

Said album is the debut from Age of Taurus, and it was meant to be a studio exercise. But I'm sure that when the band heard the dark magic they were making they decided to get this behemoth out of the studio and into the real world, where they can stand on stage and let the music roll over audiences like a tidal wave of tar.

A Rush of Power kicks the album off with drums, but the poor things are quickly set upon by the baying guitars of Toby Wright and Alastair Riddell. Their six stringers wail for a bit before they lock into a groove that can't scare away the bass guitar of Richard Bruce, who gallops along his slender brothers into the muck and mire. Sinking City is next up, and it manages to be heavier and slower than the track that came before. The vocals are clean, like the NWOBHM bands, (but not operatic) and two songs in you know you're listening to a classic record in the best possible sense. This isn't a derivative album, this isn't simply a slightly altered copy of the classics you have in your collection; this the rare new album that can stand next to them and not be nervous.

I've included Embrace the Stone at the bottom of this page, which is a stand out track. Coming in at a little over eight minutes, the tune walks a slinky baseline and boasts monkish chanted vocals. There is a choir in there too, who float upon the riffs when the mad monk isn't doing his thing.

This is a great headphone album and the fact that the album was intended as a studio project is evident in the choirs and the spoken word pieces that pop up from song to song. Those of a psychedelic bent or who enjoy a bit of prog now and again will appreciate the clear sounding but complex lyrics and the simple flourishes added to the voices. There's a story in here somewhere, like the concept records of yore, but I'm in no shape to go down that path. Check 'em out. ---And because I didn't mention him elsewhere, Daurius Claydon on drums! Well done!

LP Review: Bloodbath by Vestal Claret

Vestal Claret have just released their first proper full length CD, Bloodbath, on Nine Records. For the uninitiated, Vestal Claret (VC) play a tradtional style of doom with heavy occult influences. They sound like those second wave of doom bands (Candlemass and St. Vitus) and VC proudly flies the dark flag of these beloved bands, proudly stating on their label's web page that "there is no influence or inspiration from anything of the past 2 decades that provoked this release or it's ideas and concepts".
So that said, let's dive into some of the tunes on this album.

The album kicks off with a nearly nine and a half minute track, Hex of Harm, which offers up nearly two minutes of moody guitar until a stuttering guitar riff rattles your puny brainy in its candy shell. And don't look to the vocals for relief, here you get traditional doom vocal stylings with lyrics like "Suffer them as they may live/And if by chance they should die/Torment theirs souls in simple rhyme".  Seven minutes into the track the solos start, and they dance in flame and brimstone, while you nod and tap your cloven hoof.

Next up is Devil's Daughters, a short track by doom standards, that boasts vocals which sound more than a lil' like vocalist emeritus of the doom genre, Ozzy. And don't think this is meant to call the tune derivative. It ain't. Keep your ears peeled towards the end of this one for a drum break down with solo to follow. Oh yeah.

The Correlation starts like with drums a bangin' and somehow manges to work the lyrics "Malevolent the illuminist/Nepharious in secret society" into the tune. Say it aloud, then imagine how in the hell it could be sung. With all those syllables, the lines could have come off alien or forced, all credit to vocalist Philip Swanson.

And there's more. There is over seventy minutes of slow doom and gloom on this album. Fans of the genre will welcome this collection of straight up solid interpreation of classic doom. Doomheads! I command you to crawl from your dungeons and check this one out.

Zac's "Double Dose": Tombstones / Void Moon

Tombstones: Year of the Burial

An all Scandinavian Double Dose can't be a bad thing! First up are Norway's Tombstones with their pure doom record Year of the Burial. Our compadre Toby introduced us to this leviathan back in 2010 with their release Volume II. Well, needless to say Tombstones is back and with a darker demeanor. The trio have taken their fine skills, polished them and added some solid song writing for this sophomore release. Within the first moments of listening the most noticeable sounds are the truly earth-shattering bass lines. Honestly Mr. [Ole] Helstad is emitting enough bass through these speakers to rattle the teeth from your jaw, and you being a Heavy Planet reader know this is a good thing. Vocal duties are shared between guitarist Bjørn and Ole. These vocals at times are chant-like, fogged by the immense vibrations and create an uneasy atmosphere. Other times they over-power, ablaze in fury, like being shouted down in abuse. In the end I just call it doom... and damn good doom. Get your copy from Soulseller Records!

Void Moon: On the Blackest of Nights

That's right 'Planet-heads...Scandinavia strikes again! Well, properly... Sweden does with Void Moon and their soon-to-be released On the Blackest of Nights. Void Moon are a classic doom four-piece that kneel at the altar of Sabbath and Candlemass. Void Moon crush with a steady pace of bass heavy riff-age. If you are looking for something a little more traditional to add to your playlist check out the single Hammer of Eden below and if you need a copy head you will have to wait. On the Blackest of Nights will be officially released and available November 6th courtesy of Cruz Del Sur Music.

CANDLEMASS Mastermind LEIF EDLING To Release Solo Album Next Month

"Songs of Torment - Songs of Joy", the first solo album from CANDLEMASS and KRUX mastermind Leif Edling, is scheduled for release on March 10 via Candlelight Records.

Edling has always been unique in his songwriting, and "Songs of Torment - Songs of Joy" is, of course, no exception. The CD consists of eight monumental tracks, something Leif Edling calls minimalistic organ doom. It's slow and beautiful, but also black and epic like the album opener The Scar", and the colossal "It Is Not There". "Nautilus" is inspired by the Jules Verne classic "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea". And "On The Edge Of Time" is a poetic reflection over some old but fantastic HAWKWIND album cover art.

"Songs of Torment - Songs of Joy" was created in periods during the last year. Edling has nursed his moments of inspiration, which has lead to recording sessions in several different studios. Leif's vocals were laid down in mixer Stefan Fandén's bedroom, keyboard among colourful exotic fish in KRUX keyboardist Carl Westholm's studio, and bass and drums (by TIAMAT's Lars Sköld) in a more traditional studio environment. The guitars on the CD were tracked by Björn Eriksson and Chris Laney.

"You don't need an expensive studio to make cool music. Some friends and a creative perspective is enough," says Leif.

"Songs of Torment - Songs of Joy" track listing:

01. The Scar (05:55)
02. It Is Not There (04:26)
03. Angelic 'Til I Die (04:54)
04. On the Edge of Time (06:17)
05. Butterfly (00:57)
06. My Black Birthday (05:39)
07. Space Killer (05:40)
08. Nautilus (09:33)

ST. VITUS, TROUBLE, CANDLEMASS Among Top 10 Doom Metal Bands

Carlos Ramirez of IGN.com has compiled a list of the 10 best doom metal bands. Ramirez writes, "Doom metal is one of metal's many offshoots and it hasn't ever achieved the kind of commercial or even, critical praise that a lot of the lesser interesting ones have. The bands within this smaller scene bow to the altar of Tony Iommi and BLACK SABBATH. Some just go out and outright ape every characteristic of their sound while most simply focus on the slower paced, death-marches the band showcased on songs like 'Black Sabbath' and the funeral opening of 'War Pigs'.

"We've out together a list of the ten best bands in doom-metal history. We wanted the list to reflect the scene's rich diversity so we tried to pick bands from every stylistic pocket of that world. You'll see BLACK SABBATH referenced a lot throughout the picks but even the bands would admit they wouldn't play the way they play if it weren't for Osbourne, Iommi, Butler, and Ward."

Top 10 doom metal bands, according to IGN.com:

ST. VITUS
TROUBLE
CANDLEMASS
WITCHFINDER GENERAL
TYPE O NEGATIVE
PARADISE LOST
EARTH
SLEEP
PENTAGRAM
MY DYING BRIDE

CANDLEMASS Completes Work On New Album

Legendary Swedish doom metallers CANDLEMASS have completed work on their new album for an early 2009 release.

Commented bassist/songwriter Leif Edling: "We've worked on [the CD] all autumn and it feels really good that it is completed. The sound is superfat, heavy as hell, and very organic/dynamic at the same time. Our friend Chris [Laney; RANDY PIPER, ZAN CLAN] has done a great job mixing it!! I personally think this album is the best one of the three we have released in the new millennium, easy!! It is bigger, better, louder and a bit more mature, I must say!! It is our 'Heaven And Hell', hehe. And if you guys behave and eat your vegetables, we just might be able to add a couple of sound bits on the C-MASS site. Maybe the wait for the release in May next year will be easier. Check this page sometime before X-mas. The only thing that pisses me off is the fact that we can't call it 'Hammer Of Doom', after one of the songs on it. A brand new stupid festival in Germany calls themselves that! Who spilled the beans??? Well, well… the album absolutely KILLS and we will surely come up with a suitable name for it."

Fan-filmed video footage of CANDLEMASS performing at the Sweden Rock Cruise, which was held October 9-10, can be viewed below (clips uploaded by "blackopalrough").

CANDLEMASS has been confirmed for next year's Bloodstock Open Air festival, set to take place August 14-16, 2009 at Catton Hall in Derbyshire, England.

"Lucifer Rising", the new EP from CANDLEMASS, in October entered the Greek International Repertoire Chart at position No. 31.

"Lucifer Rising" includes two brand new tracks — "Lucifer Rising" and "The White God" — plus re-recorded version of "Demon's Gate" live in the studio. As a bonus, you get an audio recording of most of last year's gig from Athens, Greece: "At The Gallows End", "Solitude", "Emperor Of The Void", "Devil Seed", "Under The Oak", "Mirror Mirror", "Of Stars And Smoke", "Black Dwarf" and "Samarithan".

CANDLEMASS' last CD, "King of the Grey Islands", was released June 22, 2007 via Nuclear Blast Records.

The buyer will also get a signed photo with Mappe and the guitar.

CANDLEMASS Guitarist Selling 'Piece Of Doom Metal History'

CANDLEMASS guitarist Mats "Mappe" Björkman is selling the white "Candlemass skull" Gibson Les Paul Junior guitar that he used on the band's Grammis award-winning (Swedish Grammy equivalent) comeback album in 2005. The axe, which was also used at a number of live shows that year, comes with a Seymour Duncan Invader microphone plus the original mic. The buyer will also get a signed photo with Mappe and the guitar.

The guitar will be auctioned via eBay beginning on July 31.

Björkman was sentenced in March 2008 to two years in a Swedish prison for grand theft. He was convicted of stealing CDs worth approximately $490,000 from the distribution warehouse of Entertainment Network Scandinavia AB, where he and an accomplice shipped the CDs to Stockholm retail outlets.

In a recent interview with Metal-Rules.com, CANDLEMASS bassist/main songwriter Leif Edling addressed Mats' current legal status, explaining, "There will be a hearing when he comes back from [the recently completed U.S.] tour, but it was totally OK for him to go on tour and things in the papers have been so exaggerated. I feel really sorry for him. It's really unfair to him, what's been said in the papers and on the Internet. I'm pretty convinced, you know, nothing will come out of this. He will be totally freed and we can go on and record the album and continue with CANDLEMASS. I don't see a problem there. If there was a problem, he wouldn't be allowed to go on tour. He wouldn't be allowed to go abroad. That's how it is, you know."

In an April 2008 interview with Sweden Rock magazine, Mats commented on his theft conviction by saying, "I am not a criminal, but sure, just like I've sold some CDs, I've helped [Mats' alleged accomplice] sell CDs. But these are CDs that I've been given or gotten through my dealings within the music business. It's not a secret that record label people in Stockholm sell boxes of CDs to different stores, but it's nothing people like to talk about."

CANDLEMASS: Albuquerque Concert Cancelled

CANDLEMASS' previously announced June 4 concert at Launchpad in Albuquerque, New Mexico has been cancelled due to a fire at the venue. No further details are currently available.

CANDLEMASS Mainman Says Atmosphere In Band Is 'Much Better' Since MESSIAH MARCOLIN's Departure

Dimitris Kontogeorgakos of Metal Temple recently conducted an interview with CANDLEMASS mainman/bassist Leif Edling. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

Metal Temple: I read on your website that you [were going to] film yesterday's [May 20] show in New York, so how did it go?

Leif Edling: Actually, we did not film the show.

Metal Temple: Why?

Leif Edling: Mmm, I think there were some "problems" with the negotiations with the camera crew that did not show up! I guest that it might have been some misunderstanding between them and the manager or the record label. To be honest with you, I don't know what actually happened, and I was pretty disappointed when the cameras weren't there.

Metal Temple: Will you make another attempt to film a U.S. show?

Leif Edling: No, it supposed to be done in New York and the camera crew was from there. So we cannot afford to get on the road. There won't be a DVD shooting in this tour. Well, apart from our own cameras and stuff.

Metal Temple: So, Rob's [Lowe, vocals] addition to the lineup changed the atmosphere in the band?

Leif Edling: Yeah, we definitely have much better atmosphere in the band. We have more fun as a band and I think this is the way it should be. Everyone seems to have more fun and actually feels more relaxed. With Messiah [Marcolin, former singer] things were difficult because he made it that way. Now it is totally a different thing like night and day. It's like walk in the park being in CANDLEMASS!

Metal Temple: What about the next album, do you have any thoughts about it?

Leif Edling: Most of the tracks are ready and when we return home after the U.S. tour in the middle of June, we will do some more live dates, then we will have some vacation time during July and finally on August get on the studio to record it.

Metal Temple: Musically, where does it stand?

Leif Edling: Well, I think it will be better than the "King Of The Grey Islands" that was better than the white album. So, we will continue in this pattern (laughs). Basically, it is pretty much in the same vein and I can surely say that I am very pleased with it.
