LP Review "Alunah - White Hoarhound"

The sprawling and pollution stained concrete of Birmingham city, which lies in the appropriately named area of the UK known as the Black Country, can be considered the great womb of heavy metal and its splintering genres, having spawned such ground breaking and brain quaking bands as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Witchfinder General, Napalm Death and, a personal favorite of mine, Godflesh. But those are just some of the more well known bands from Brum (as it's affectionately known here), and with this latest release from Alunah, Brum has yet again spawned a band who have a direct link to the heavy current that flows through the dark land of the Black Country.

This past few years has seen a flurry of female fronted doom and stoner bands, none of which I'll mention here as you will probably know at least a couple of the more well known and successful ones. The lead singer of Alunah however, gives those particular bands a real run for their money. Her voice is simply exquisite and is a nigh on perfect accompaniment for the sound that Alunah make.

White Hoarhound is Alunah's second full length release, with 6 tunes of crunchy fuzzed out, down tuned and shroomy pagan inspired Doom Metal (and one acoustic dark folk jam) released on vinyl by Napalm Records.

From the opener, Demeter's Grief, Alunah come with spaced out psychedelia preceding mighty doom riffs of low-end fuzz conjured from the earth as if tapping a vein of ancient bardic energy that has lain dormant for time immeasurable. I can almost taste the soil and the stone when the thick fuzz hits me. When I close my eyes I see hoards of robed up wizards carrying oaken staffs, a sacrament of psilocybin brews consumed and chanting huge bass tones at a towering monolith, drawing mother Gaia's nurturing flow of life giving energy to ensure a bountiful crop and a strong and healthy tribe. This is doom but it is natural earthy doom and it's very laid back in its delivery.

Track 2 is White Hoarhound and Alunah do not mess about here. They slam you immediately with chunky stoner grooves, the solid fuzz tickling the core of your brain and guitar licks of stupendous mind expanding proportions. The singers lyrics are delivered with sumptuous earthy vibes that put the listener in a trance; telling a story that could well have been penned by some vastly ancient scribe. It is spiritual stuff indeed; an ode to the old ways of pre-Roman Britain, ways that never really went away because they are recorded in the ground and in the rocks and in the forests.

Belial's Fjord, the third track, reinforces the pagan vibe that Alunah create with this album. We are treated to yet more low-end fuzziness and stomping drums and riffs of doom with vocals that drift through unexplored mountains and valleys filled with long stretches of deep dark water. What lies beneath nobody knows, but this must be the sound the  ancients used to move their huge stones vast numbers of miles.

Next is The Offering where Alunah offer up a slow dirge of fuzz and other worldly chanting followed by spine wrenching stoner rock riffage and a hymn to the pagan gods. It traverses huge expanses of sacred land and echoes around the temple of Gaia. It is indeed an offering and one that Alunah make in earnest showing where their heavy hearts truly lie.

The Chester Summer is track 5 which opens with sounds of an ominous wind blowing until a bass tuned to doom and stepping drums herald a plunging of thick warm fuzz and Sabbathian riffs cover you from head to toe entombing you in a cocoon of doom metal and words of praise to the solstice day of summer. The pagan tribes gather around a circle of stones to honor and pay tribute to the rising sun where they celebrate the longest day of light and the shortest dark of night.

Oak Ritual I breaks the flow of shroomy doomy fuzz with a psychedelic acoustic jam sounding like a pagan lullaby to an ancient forest of oaks. The robed up wizards gather again, walking in line towards the father of all oak trees that lies within the center, the vocalist singing a soft ethereal chant to awaken the forest spirits. Hypnotic acoustic guitar riffs sound a homage to the oak trees with an organ adding to the invocating vibrations. The ritual has begun.

Oak Ritual II follows where the riffs fall thick and heavy with stoner doom grooves that penetrate the earth, waking the ancient ones; the echoed airy voice of the mother goddess drifts around the darkness of the oak forest and over the empty fields forging an electric connection to the essence of soil, stone and wood. The track evolves into psychedelic drifts of sound until it builds to celebratory uplifting guitar licks and thudding totemic drums. The energy from the earth is now invoked and passes through those that are gathered for the supreme ritual of the oak.
But there is something hidden that comes after the ritual is complete so listen out for it.

Alunah are fast shaping up to be one the UK's best paganistic Doom-Metal bands and if laid back earthy fuzzed out grooves are what lifts your spirit to unexplored dimensions then this is an essential addition to your collection.

White Hoarhound is now available in green or white vinyl from Napalm Records or as a digital download from their bandcamp.

Album Review - Alunah: Call of Avernus

It seems like a lazy comparison to say that Alunah sounds kind of like a female fronted Black Sabbath, but dammit the shoe fits, so that’s what I’m going with. This foursome from Birmingham, England dabbles in doom metal of the slow and low variety, with equal parts fuzzed out and groovy psychedelic rock thrown into the mix. Guitarist David Day, bassist Gaz Imber and drummer Jake Mason make enough noise to truly awaken the unholy spirits as the name of their album implies (Avernus is an Italian crater lake that was considered to be the entrance to the underworld in ancient Roman lore), but what really sets Alunah apart from their peers is the ethereal voice of singer Sophie Willett. The combination of her delicately powerful vocals with the sheer immensity of the band’s sound is best described as…well, let’s call it majestically heavy.

Call of Avernus begins with a trudging bass line from Imber that is slowly built upon by a wall of feedback and riffage from Willett (she also plays rhythm guitar) and Day, until Mason unloads on his drum set and the band explodes into the up-tempo album opener “Living Fast in an Ancient Land”. Willett’s vocals then enter the fray for the first time and they’re like a vapor swirling all around you…it’s impossible to know which direction they’re coming from as they envelope you like a mist. Check out the song's bridge at around the four and a half minute mark for an example…beautiful!

The title track follows with another trance inducing riff and flat out catchy drum beat. This one is an eerie ode to the place called Avernus as it finds Willett crooning “and the birds fall from the sky”, an obvious nod to the legend that any bird that dared fly near the crater would fall dead (in fact the English translation of Avernus is “without birds”). And I can’t tell if it’s the guitars or the vocals, but Alunah seems to be using some kind effect here that gives the song a weird sort of submersed quality as Willet appropriately sings the line “the water’s deep, I can feel it now”. Whatever it is, it works. And once you get to “Song of the Sun” the band has really hit their stride as they crank their Iommi worship to eleven with solid riffs, a nice little psychedelic guitar solo and more lyrics of the mystic variety.

Speaking of psychedelic…“Magick Lantyrn” is a hazy, trippy sort of breather if you will…a mellow interlude that ultimately delivers the listener into the clutches of the heaviest groove on Call of Avernus…the epic “Eternal Sea”. This one starts off as a fairly standard doom number with Willett's ghostly vocals residing just under the surface of the music, but then it begins a metamorphosis of sorts, first into a scorching guitar solo, then slowing to an extended, almost proggy jam and finally changing pace into a pure sludge-fest that sees Alunah slowing things down…and down…and down until all that's left is a blanket of feedback. And just as you begin to wrap your head around that devolution in sound, the band ramps everything right back into a fast paced, punk beat as they jam out on "Dance of Dionysus", by far the catchiest song on the album.

"Circle of Stone" almost feels like two different songs as it begins with subtle interplay between the guitar and bass and then sees the rest of the band pick up on the groove and transition into a smooth instrumental jam…well not really I guess, as Sophie interrupts briefly to add a line or two of prose. But the steady groove completely transitions at about the five minute mark and Alunah are off and running again. "Higher" is Alunah at their doomiest, as it sees them mining Electric Wizard territory in the down tuned, evil-tastic riff department…but again, its their vocals that separate them from the others, giving Call of Avernus a sound all its own. The album concludes with "Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn" another heavy, chugging monster of a song that will leave your head bouncing to its solid groove.

With Call of Avernus, Alunah has created an album that, in my opinion, moves them right alongside a lot of the doom bands from whom they so obviously draw their inspiration. The difference is that they actually manage to strip away the filler some bands tend to use as a crutch when recording a full length. Add to that a sincerely original vocal approach courtesy of Sophie Willett and you have something fresh and exciting in a genre that prides itself on minimalism. They're doom without being too gloomy…they're riff rock without becoming stale or monotonous…and they manage to explore different sounds and textures without being too experimental. Go ahead...give Alunah a listen…the Call of Avernus beckons.

New Band To Burn One To-Alunah

The band formally known as Aluna combines elements of Stoner, Doom, and Psychedelic grooves, pair that with inspired female vocals and you have the aptly named Alunah. The band has been around for a few years and has participated in such compilations as Stonerrock.com Vol. 8 (2008), Droning Earth Vol. 13, (2008), and  Planet Doom Vol.1 (Doomanoid Records 2010) amongst many others. The band has also toured with the likes of  Trouble, Orange Goblin, Nebula, etc. On December 6, 2010, the band will release its debut album  "Call of Avernus" for Catacombs Records. Right now you can pick up your very own copy of their latest EP "Fall to Earth" to wet your whistle.

Review of "Fall to Earth" by Tobias Beament, Planetfuzz.net

Wow!... Acid king has a twin sister!!!

If you love Acid king and worship Black Sabbath you will jump up and down from joy when you hear what Alunah has to offer on this three tracker!

This UK army of four fronted by female singer Olivia (Soph) is very hot indeed, it's like getting laid. On Alunah's debut ep 'Fall from earth' you get three reasons why you need

to get this as soon as possible, heavy, fuzz laden, down tuned and sexy... yeeeeaaah yeeeeaaah!

I got amazed when the first track started to spin, the beautiful 'Spend my time' opened my heart and i fell in love with this band right away. Alunah's gift to the riff gods are superior, this is first class, basic and grinding riffings (which i adore) with a tasteful psychedelic mix of fuzz rock and doom. 'Fall to earth' is a love session from start to finish... simply once you're in it you're hooked.

Please 'Show me how' you do this (last song) cause this is fabulous and this is definitely my favourite on this ep, i can't get enough of it and i'll keep spinning it over and over again, what a great start on this crusade toward the high mountains. (Read more...)
