Headbuzz-Your Daily Dose of Heavy and Fuzzed Out Sonic Submissions From Heavy Planet

We hope you are as serious about your band as we are, because we are about to do something unprecedented. Our goal since our inception was to get the word out about bands from around the world that otherwise may have never gotten heard. We have helped many bands in our 8-plus years of existence get noticed by labels, sell more merchandise and gain a growing fan base. Our new band submission page will be changing format. We will feature every, yes I said every band that submits to us as long as the form is filled out completely and professionally. One thing to understand however, is that not every band submitted will be reviewed. Our review process will still remain the same. This new form will be available on April 1 (no this is not an April Fool's joke) Let's say you submit on April 1, your band will be featured on April 2, that is unless there are 5 or more submissions on any given day. We will only feature a limit of 5 bands per day. In that case the bands will roll over to get queued up to the next day. The initial post will be on our main page and will then be archived on a dedicated page called HEADBUZZ. We are sorry, but if you have recently submitted your band, you will have to re-submit using the new form to get featured. We hope you are excited about this and hope we can rattle the skulls of more music fans around the world.

Zac's "Double Dose": Lilium / Skeletons In The Piano

Lilium: Black, Dear 

Italy is a growing power-house in the down-tuned and ethereal music department. Most notable of the Italians are Ufomammut and their perfected vision of doom, drone, and psychedelic metal through the 2012 dual releases Oro. Here to carry another beacon of the Italian interpretation is Lilium, a band that has a snug-fitting form of post-metal influenced sludge that leaves the listener inseparable from the piece of music they've just experienced. Not so much like the mud caked sludge that needs a pressure wash for removal. Lilium leaves more of a warm, in utero ooze, which although can be wiped away easily, leaves an enduring and psycho-emotional bruise that lingers. 

Now, word in the underground is that Lilium will be releasing their debut record, entitled Black, Dear, through Taxi Driver Store sometime this year. However, the band decided to issue a couple singles along the road to release, starting with the track Solitude last October. Toting some sincere lyrical content behind an eerie intro Solitude packs a post-metal punch through a gravely style of singing in the vein of Isis. The use of synths on this four minute song accentuate the atmosphere immensely surrounding the guitars and rhythym instruments. More recently Lilium released a second single entitled Oak Tree. Like watching an inescapable storm steadily toil over the open sea Oak Tree approaches with a distant and peaceful thunder concealed by a pleasantly picked measure. More so, adding to the peaceful inception, lead singer Filippo's softly whispered and over-dubbed lyrics broadcast a Deftones, Chino Moreno vibe. By the time three minutes of Oak Tree have elapsed the outer walls of the storm have suddenly appeared at your head, pouring sonic waves through your body. Skeletons In The Piano: Please Don't Die 

This weeks second 'Dose are a full five-piece ensemble (plus two belly-dancers) and call themselves Skeletons In The Piano. Performing one of the most diverse forms of rock 'n roll I've ever heard, Skeletons incorporate haunting lyrics and melodies in a strange operatic circus full of contrasting sounds. As their belly-dancers, Katarra [Peterson] and Tatiana [Morales], hypnotize on looking fans the musical foundation of Skeletons parallel these actions with dense sound waves. The convergence of the guitars, banjo, and violin erupt in an authentic gypsy celebration while lead-man Elijah [Hargrave] conjures his inner Mike Patton. It's not all cheery and psychedelic fun though. Skeletons dig deep with an extra measure of heavy and progressive metal character. Zac's "Double Dose": KATLA / New Keepers of the Water Towers

 

KATLA: "I Will Hunt You / Foaming Waters" 

Surprise, surprise, surprise... More excellent tunes from Sweden. Here at the 'Dose this Wednesday we have a shot from Sweden, Stockholm centered and swelling with dark psych, acid blues, and a touch of folk inspiration. This is KATLA, a quartet layered with distortion, fuzz, loads of melody, and topped off with a gorgeous set of female vocals. The group describe their sound as, "...like having your brain smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick". Although I do agree with the gold and the lemon, I do not get the "smashed out" sensation after jammin' to their latest 7" release entitled I Will Hunt You / Foaming Waters. Here KATLA's attack is covert and clandestine. This isn't your smash and grab, get pummeled style of rock. Within moments of spinning side one,the I Will Hunt You single side, your ears are quickly aware of this dragon's cunning intellect. KATLA aren't here to overpower you and take you against your will, (no smashing necessary) they are here with a sonic lure that will have you freely walking into their lair. This attraction, through seduction, begins with a beautifully toned blues guitar measure. There is a slight surf rock vibe coming from the electric guitar once the enticement has initiated and before you know it you've been struck powerless in the sonic field reverberating from the vocals. Flip the 7" to the opposite side and you will immediately notice more of that appealing guitar tone. This mated to the perfect lo-fi, analog style production bring an authenticity to KATLA's sound. Here we are now fully immersed in Foaming Waters, and that rich guitar tone is really what drive KATLA's fruit deep into my conscious. The track is elevated in grandeur as the dark and reminiscent strings of a violin enter the room and graze your mind. This classy and tasteful addition to Foaming Waters soon disappears as that tonal guitar steps to the fore-front with what is quickly becoming my favorite guitar solo of 2013. The violin appears again only this time joining the guitar for a rich, indulgent outro. Awaking now in silence you are fully aware that KATLA have vanished leaving you with little but a memory, just enough to hold onto until you meet again. So, in the end we return to KATLA's own description... the sound is gold, priceless and the lemon (fruit) we can only hope will multiply in the form of a full-length album in the near future. New Keepers of the Water Towers: Cosmic Child 

New Keepers of the Water Towers aren't new to the 'Planet. I reviewed their sophomore release The Calydonian Hunt back in the summer of 2011. There we found a young band, full of aggression and spewing some heavy stoner-focused sludge metal. With this latest release, entitled Cosmic Child, New Keepers... have dropped the sludge moniker almost entirely, all while opening the gate-way for their music to drift into a psychedelic and much more progressive spectrum. It is truly magnificent to see a group of musicians grow so much over the course of a few years. Here Cosmic Child has taken what was good song writing and arrangements within the confines of The Calydonian Hunt and transformed those basic characteristics into genuine brilliance through more concentrated song writing and a spacey atmosphere. 

Cosmic Child begins with opening song, and the albums first single, The Great Leveller. This opener acclimates previous listeners gradually into the Keepers... new sound. All you first time listeners out there, just enjoy the ride. The Great Leveller sounds most like its predecessor through the thunderous and tribal stomp of the percussion and the shear mass of the rhythm section. The chanting styled vocalization brings an eerie sensation upon you while the guitars taunt you to come just a step closer. The Great Leveller disperses abruptly through a swirling flush and is soon all but a memory. Here the music doesn't only transform, it is revolutionized with the entrance of track two, Visions of Death. Greeting our ears is a much softer and lighter side of Keepers... The band chose to deceive us through the inviting sound of an acoustic, or possibly even classical, guitar. This very European inspired, medieval folk touch erodes away with the build of a dominant electric ether. That heavy RIFFING clashes with the cleanly sung lyrics creating a beautiful emission, something that reminds me of Alcest, although by a completely different musical path. With the close of Visions of Death we find ourselves evolving with the band once again. Now, in a very melancholy and retrospective state the Keepers... carry us through the dark by careful acoustic plucking and some murky notes played on a piano. Welcome to Pyre for the Red Sage. Full of some of the most textured Pink Floyd style soundscapes Pyre for the Red Sage further unfolds by the wailing of a pained guitar. The final twenty minutes will transport you higher into Cosmic Child's astral plane and leave us return listeners bewildered at the fact that this was the same band that crushed us with the weight of The Calydonian Hunt. How about a quick drag? Today's New Band To Burn One To is a three minute blaze entitled Void from Cuiaba, Brazil based trio Fuzzly. If the name isn't enough of a hint, listeners can expect a head full of fuzz within seconds of that first breath of Void. The band have been creating some excellent stoner and desert rock for some twelve years now and the static emission from this single shows no signs of Fuzzly lettin' up. Interested in another hit? The band lay it on thick with a lot of distorted bass and percussion taking up a hefty share of the mix, burying the vocals in the Void. Zac's "Double Dose": Empire Escorts / Groan

Empire Escorts: The Weather Single 

Empire Escorts are a Jersey-shore powerhouse building a sound from a stoner rock foundation. Getting started in 2009 the four-some built a following through their accessible sound and balls to the wall performances. Dropping an EP in 2011 the bands public witness increased and they found tunes being played at their local radio station. Well, they are back with their latest single "The Weather", a heavy blues inspired tune that could certainly make radio play. The guitar and bass are layered thick, something welcomed here at Heavy Planet. The video, below, was shot around photogenic Jersey sites, some which have now been washed away by Hurricane Sandy. Its good to know they can still be visited through this crisp produced and well shot video. Groan: The Divine Right of Kings 

67% true doom. Doom 'n' roll. Call it what you may, but Groan have made a hell of a combination of classic rock and the gloomiest of doom. These UK stoners started billowing smoke in late 2009. Since then they have been delivering the goods and, in turn, receiving some worthy praise. Their latest The Divine Right of Kings was released at the end of October [2012], making plenty of friends. You know its worth a listen if it made Bill's Picks over The Soda Shop. Check out the psychedelic video for Atomic Prophets below and you can pick up a copy from Soulseller Records.

New Alice In Chains Single "A Looking In View"

By now most of you have heard the new song "A Looking In View" by Alice In Chains. Frankly, I am pretty anxious to hear the rest of the CD. I know it won't be the same without Layne Staley's devilishly nasaly harmonies, but the music still sounds awesome and new vocalist William Duvall is a nice compliment to Cantrell's vocals. Let me know what you guys think!

Introducing Stone Cold Boys

Stone Cold Boys — a young stoner/psychedelic/southern/whatever band — was born after the participants of another heavy team, Stoner Deffect, broke up. Mr. Tazz (bass), who was the stoner ideologist in SD, and Mr. Big D (drums) continued jamming occasionally though, hoping to find new musicians to create a band based on Kyuss` legacy. After short period of time they were joined by Mr. LBAE (vocals) and, in early October 2007, Mr. Vanish (guitar), and it was clear that they made a perfect match. As soon as the name appeared, the Boys started to work on various material. As all of them were, besides stoner bands, influenced by different music (from 60`s and 70`s classics like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and old blues to Soundgarden, Mr. Bungle, early 90`s hardcore teams and other) the songs they were producing differed from each other a lot, but they all had the same roots. In December 2007 they were also joined by Maul, who became their manager soon. After a period of strange events like flood at one studio and power collapse at the other, Stone Cold Boys managed to record a short demo. The demo can be downloaded here (and the cover here).

Mammoth Volume Launches New Website

Mammoth Volume has launched a new website - www.mammothvolume.com. In honor of the event, they have made available – for free – their 1999 debut album and 2005`s Return of the Mammoth Volume EP. Also on the site is a sound sample of upcoming material, with the promise of more to follow.

NEBULA Recording New Demos

Los Angeles rockers NEBULA have issued the following update:

"NEBULA spent a long day in the studio Monday recording demos. A total of ten new songs were recorded. We would like to thank Zeph, Ian, Kiki and Jordan at The Pass in Los Angeles, CA for all their hard work, and to Karen for making it happen. Check out our MySpace page for some pictures from the session."

NEBULA recently posted a video for the song "Loose Cannon" on YouTube. Watch the clip below.

NEBULA last year announced the addition of drummer Rob Oswald (KARMA TO BURN, MONDO GENERATOR) to the group's ranks.

NEBULA's latest album, "Apollo", was released in 2006 via Liquor and Poker. The CD was produced by Daniel Rey (RAMONES, MISFITS, L7) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (THE MARS VOLTA, SONIC YOUTH, FRANZ FERDINAND).

Former ARTIMUS PYLEDRIVER Members Launch New Project

Vocalist Dave Slocum of the now-defunct Atlanta, Georgia sludge metal band ARTIMUS PYLEDRIVER has issued the following update:

"OK, yes, ARTIMUS PYLEDRIVER is done, has been for some time. Had a great run, and had some great times! Thanks to all y'all that came out to shows, let us crash, and all that hoopla. Not even gonna get into why, but the absurdity of it all would make for an interesting read.

"New things: We have a new band. Kevin Bond, who came on to the last AP tour, learned our songs in two days, and provided a much needed breath of fresh air. Kevin is a true pro, and has music in his veins. He has written some great new songs, and really taken it to the next level. Travis Owen will be doing his thing. Those of y'all that have sen him know what to expect, and lemme tell ya, he's pretty pissed off.

"James Atwell from MOSES JONES has come in and really kicked the intensity up a notch. Slide guitar, soaring vocals, and some really nice leads. I am still doing my thing, learning a lot from James, and having a great time with the new band.

"We have secured Dez Fafara's (DEVILDRIVER) Abaddon Management once again to handle all the business end.

"We need a bass player. We need someone who can tour, write. You have to be able to cut the string, mamma cannot come with you! Think AC/DC, GOV'T MULE, NAZARETH, MC5, ZZ TOP, whiskey bar room brawls.

"If you are interested send me a link to your myspace, and I will send you a track to learn. Must be able to live in Atlanta or thereabouts. MUST GET DOWN! Touring experience a plus.

"Folks, don't waste our time, y'all know what kind of person we need. We like four strings, Ampegs, Fenders, Rickenbacher, Cliff Williams, Lemmy, Cliff Burton etc.

"All that being said, we are having a great time, and look to be on the road again in the spring."
