FREE DOWNLOAD: Bong Hits From the Astral Basement Volume 2

Where'd the time go? Opening on blasts of smoke and fuzz, 2013 offered a fat stash of stoner rock stickiness, nowhere better captured than in Heavy Planet's basement. We sift through countless stems and seeds to share what we believe are the finest sonic buds you haven't heard. Sure, we wax and wince on Sabbath, Kyuss, Sleep, and Clutch as much as the next blog. But our bread and bud-butter is offering you, the tirelessly faithful, an avenue through which to find your new favorite band.

The release of Bong Hits from the Astral Basement: Volume I saw sixty-one vastly underappreciated artists reaching speakers on a scale that transcended language barriers and wet coughs. Since 2008, Heavy Planet has strived to be your go-to, crafting easy introductions between bands and listeners. With Volume I, our middlemen received a staggering, humbling response in terms of both submissions and downloads. As a new year briskly approaches and promising new sounds emerge from breezeways and back alleys, we're stoked to offer a beefed-up Volume II.

Our repeat offenders are what keep this thing alive. Heavy Planet is proud to be part of a music scene boasting the heaviest purple-fiber jams and most absolutely loyal fans. These hand-picked nugs embody just a fraction of our gratitude to those of you who keep coming back and never fail in spreading the good word. Clear a spot on the couch and strap on some headphones. Here's to you, comrade.

Thank you and Happy New Year,

Heavy Planet

For the next 24 hours, Heavy Planet is proud to offer to you a free download of "Lumbo Rock" from Ripple Music artist Mos Generator's 10th anniversary edition of their debut album. Below is the press release and the free download link. Enjoy!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Port Orchard, WA - Mark it on your calendars, the deluxe edition of the debut Mos Genrator album, featuring a full length LP, a CD with previously unreleased tracks and a full incendiary live concert, and a digital download of further live, demo, and jam tracks will be available throughout North America on April 10th, 2012! In conjunction with Nail Distribution, Ripple Music is proud to announce that this quintessential debut album and amazing musical package will now be available to a wider market of insatiable rock n’ roll fans.

And this Thursday, March 22nd, 2012, Ripple Music will make the lead track from the album, "Lumbo Rock!", available for free download exclusively at Heavy Planet! The free download will only be available for 24 hours, so if you haven't heard Mos Generator before and want to know what's what, now is the perfect time to dive in!

“This Mos Generator package is one of those sets that speaks to the lifelong Mos fan, as well as those who are discovering the band for the first time,” states Tony Reed, singer and guitarist for the band. “It was a goal for myself and the label to create a package that was affordable, something that looked cool, and was packed with some special moments from the bands ten year history.”

Featuring over two and a half hours of music, the Mos Generator 10th Anniversary Edition was designed with the music fan in mind. The package includes three popular formats for listening to the bands 70’s-inspired hard rock in the way of 12” vinyl, CD, and digital download, and all packaged in an eye-popping 12” gatefold jacket.

Here’s what the press is saying:

“ . . . like the rampaging inhabitants of a sonic Jurassic Park; thunderously heavy, jaw droppingly magnificent and maybe just a little bit scary. This is music that went extinct many years ago, but against all expectation and logic, here it is alive and thriving in the modern age. 4/5” -- The BCFM Sunday Rockshow

"Of all the second-wave Sabbath types, these guys were and remain by far the most original, with tricky prog tempos, tunefully sludgy Tony Iommi-style lo-register riffage and a sense of humor to rival their sense of purpose. If metal is your thing and you slept on this stuff when it first came out – and a lot of people did, this was before myspace, let alone youtube – now’s a good time to rediscover them." -- Lucid Culture

“Really a fantastic package all around. Once again Ripple Music not only delivers the goods, but they go the extra and exceed all my expectations on this one." -- Heavy Metal Time Machine

Doom As Fuck: Rorcal

Swiss Drone/Doom band Rorcal offers up their latest opus Heliogabalus for FREE download.

RORCAL sees the light in Geneva (Switzerland) in 2006.
After four efforts between 2007 and 2008 and about fifty shows through Europe, the band is now ready to release its fifth block : HELIOGABALUS.

This one marks a radical change in the band’s music. Obsessively dark and heavy, this 70 minutes monolithic piece sees RORCAL sink deeper into the abysses of sound.

Somewhere between Drone and Doom, let yourself go into the bowels of the whale.

Going right out of inferno, HLGBLS is a 70 minutes song which illustrates
the decadence of the Roman emperor, Heliogabalus.
This time Rorcal is going ways further than before, with crushing doom parts,
including long hellish droning fields.
This album is scary, really aggressive, completely gloomy.
Be sure, you never heard something like that, and you never will.
If you’re looking for something really extreme, this is exactly what you need.
CD packed in special limited edition!
- CD presented in an A6 digifile, including an 8 pages color booklet.
Limited to 500 copies. Hand-assembled and hand-numbered
Booklet inserted into a black envelope. Sealed with blood-red wax.

Review:

by Zak Vargus, ScenePointBlank.com

Rorcal, from Switzerland, present Heliogabalus , a near-perfect doom/drone album. This record is so dark that the cover can’t even be seen on a computer. Hell, the music is so dark that some may not even be able to listen it. It takes a valiant effort to listen to a 1 song album that clocks in at 70 minutes, especially an album of this caliber. Good thing Rorcal make it worth your while. Heavy,  dissonant, painful, menacing, depressing, dark, terrifying, are all words that immediately come to mind upon first listen. (Read more...)

Free Music Download-Deaf Proof

Bio:

Deaf Proof were formed in late 2006 by Pedro (d), Holger (b) and Fredo (v/g), later reinforced by Til (g). From that point of time they started jamming and working out their ideas. The result was a mix of stonerrock, metal, 70s-rock, r'n'r, psychedelic and a dash of progressive, in other words: Down-tuned and based on a diversified drum and bass groove, the fat riffs are varied by tons of cutting melodies, crying soli and twin guitar attacks, on top raw and powerful vocals. In autumn 2007 the band split up with guitar-player Til who was replaced by Phil. Quickly after that, the band had to postpone their plans because of Phil's tinnitus. In early 2008 the band decided to substitute Holger and to search for a new bassplayer. But nevertheless Deaf Proof recorded their first demo that was released in April 2008. The bass on the demo was played by Phil. Deaf Proof found the new four stringer Angus in june 2008. In december the band unfortunately had to search for a new bassplayer again and in march 2009 JP joined the gang. Together they recorded a 2-track live-demo in july. The combo is recording their first album (including 2 brandnew tracks) since autumn 2009 likely to be released in late 2011. They live-debut was in february 2010 supporting the famous Stonewall Noise Orchestra from Sweden.

This German band offers up some pretty down and dirty blues heavy rifff-oriented jams. The band is currently in the studio working on a full-length and has generously offered the readers of Heavy Planet their previous 2 demos and a live track for free download. A few pre-production demos of  2 songs off the new album can be found on their MySpace page. Free Music: Fister-Bronsonic

On August 30, 2003 Charles Bronson died of pneumonia and went to Hell. Bronson entered the first level of Hell with a chip on his shoulder. He demanded to speak to the Devil himself about his stay. Upon entering the Devil’s chamber, he pulled out a .44 Magnum and blew his teeth out the back of his skull. He now rules Hell under his new name, Lucifer Bronson. His first assignment as King of Hell was to write the most evil music ever to be heard by human ears. He wrote countless hours of music and hid it in a secret dimension.

In Saint Louis, Missouri, four guys were smoking a combination of marijuana and salvia. They uncovered Bronson’s sheet music and decided to document it for mankind.

This music can only be recorded under the influence of black weed during Bronsonic rituals. The only people on Earth that can understand the workings of Bronson’s sheet music are the Ambassadors of Hell, Fister.

The band is selling these cassettes at their show Jan. 21st @ The Firebird in St. Louis, MO and  are limited to only 30 copies. If you are not lucky enough to get to the show the band will sell the remaining copies at Pissfork.net. Free E-Book Downloads From Ryan Bartek

If anyone is looking for some interesting reading, this dude named Ryan Bartek has made available a couple of books he wrote as free downloads. The first book is "The Big Shiny Prison" which is a nonfiction road epic about fringe subculture & extreme metal journalism and the second is "The Silent Burning" which is about as metal a book could ever be without directly being “about” metal, per se.

Some of you might already be familiar with Ryan's writing anyway, as he has long been a metal journalist (Metal Maniacs, PIT Magazine, Hails & Horns + dozens of international webzines). He's also been in a slew of metal bands over the years and has toured nationally.

On surface “THE SILENT BURNING” is basically a scattered anthology about growing up in Detroit, but at core, it’s an anti-speech for the ages. No stone is left unturned – Columbine, occultism, pan-tribalism, zombies, psychedelics, madness, drug abuse, black comedy, al Qaeda, anarchism, punk rock, lunatic cops, bullshit cinema, heavy metal – all presented in a surrealistic fashion that will appeal to fans of Burroughs, Celine, Bukowski, Pessoa, Henry Miller, Lautreamont, etc.

It’s a tough book to describe because it has no direct comparison. It is also an extremely “hard sell” because it is so fanatically anti-commercial & jarringly shocking (to some). Furthermore, its audience are those who rarely read – but the second this book is put in front of them and they just skim through the pages, 9 times out of 10 they read half the book in one sitting. Honestly, no propagandizing.

Originally released on January 5th 2005 by Elitist Publications, “THE SILENT BURNING” was quickly pulled from stores because of its highly confrontational, raw & offensive nature. “THE SILENT BURNING” went on to become a legitimate cult phenomenon, with original copies appearing on e-bay for an upwards of $80.

Written for the sole purpose of brutal self therapy, “THE SILENT BURNING” is a take no prisoners account of bi-polar depression from the grim bowels of Detroit. Created during supreme hopelessness (circa 1998-2002), “THE SILENT BURNING” is a ruthless anti-speech that supremely capsizes the Post-Cobain/Pre-Columbine “Dark Generation” who soon grew into adulthood watching “Fight Club” one too many times.

Somewhere between “The Wall,” “The Downward Spiral” & every Napalm Death album, “THE SILENT BURNING” is a nexus of black humor so callous no one is quite sure if they are even supposed to laugh. It is essentially a mammoth poem fragmented into a quasi-anthology, featuring over 70 vignettes, soliloquies, dream narratives, journal entries, poems, rants & misanthropic outbursts.

On July 4th Ryan released his entire music discography for free (5 albums), all of which were Detroit-centric groups: A.K.A. MABUS, SASQUATCH AGNOSTIC & his acoustic project JACK CASSADY, which he nationally tours as.

What others are saying:

“One of the most interesting, and perhaps honest, books of the last decade."-1340MAG.com

“This deeply personal memoir, one of many, as well as his views on racism, abortion, and drugs speak volumes about Bartek’s ability to analyze society from the perspective of someone who isn’t from the privileged class. From his disadvantageous upbringing, he has developed a brutal style of analysis, buttressed by an in-depth knowledge about innumerable subjects, qualifying him to speak for his generation…”-The Satanic Inquisition

“In many ways, ‘The Silent Burning’ reads like a counter-culture manifesto, an underground guide to the rebellion. Paranoia, anger and self-preservation guide Ryan Bartek’s decrees, which he operates in the same clobbering, sarcastic vein of Kerouac as he does Chuck D. Bartek rants to his hearts content, and his heart is blackened like the underbelly of hell.”-PIT Magazine

“Bartek slams you upon entering and like the ball in a pinball machine you are flicked aggressively from heartrending childhood story to barely coherent hate filled manifesto to disjointed poem to intelligently articulated commentary… This book is for those who are simmering with the anger of repression and persecution, and for those who want to understand them without judging. It also touches those of us who maintain a less hostile attitude towards society, but are just as disgusted with the mainstream version of reality.”-Clamor Magazine

“The Silent Burning is a postmodern polemic, a schizophrenic society, and a hyper charged imagination reflected in a funhouse mirror, populated by a narrator looking for something approaching understanding, but finding a head-on-collision with the world instead… You’re left with blood on the floor and screams ringing in your ears- but also a great deal of truth, if you can stand to look at it.”-JAM RAG
