Two For Tuesday-"New Bands To Burn One(Two) To"-Behind The Sun/Sihr

Today I have two very incredible bands for you guys to hear. The first "New Band To Burn One To" is Behind The Sun. Behind the Sun are five musicians writing and performing heavy rock music in Israel. Gad Erez, vocals. Saar Gur, drums. Yoram Allouche, guitars. Dan Levy, bass. Aaron Lieber, guitars and vocals. The band was formed on the edges of the vast Negev desert. The music and lyrics speak of their personal trials and tribulations living in this heavenly but harsh land. Behind The Sun has just released their self-titled debut album. The contents: heavy, electric, tube driven riffing, blended with progressive styles and sensibilities and their own skeptical, cynical, but in the end positive philosophy as written word and amplified sound. Influences range from Queens of the Stone Age and Opeth, to Baroness and Rush.

Heavy Planet Needs Your Help

Over the past couple years I have come across some of the best bands that I have ever heard by writing this blog. When I started this blog I really had no idea what to expect. I knew that others shared my love for music, but I guess I was a bit naive because there are a lot of bands from overseas that have found my little blog to help promote their bands. Also, when I started this blog I had a ton of time and would post news, reviews, etc. everyday. Now I am lucky if I have the time to post once or twice per week. Please do not get discouraged if I do not post a feature on your band right away, I will eventually get to it. Also, if I do post a feature on your band the least you can do is reply with a simple thank you. I truly appreciate all the e-mails that I get stating how much you enjoy the blog. A few things that I hope to do in the future are 1) making an archive of the "New Bands To Burn One To" and 2) getting back to posting an "Album Of The Week" along with an archive for that as well.

I have a few questions for you guys and be honest.

1. Would you like to have new release info. posted here or do you go elsewhere?
2. Would you like news stories to be posted here or do you go elsewhere?
3. How often do you buy from Amazon.com or iTunes or do you just prefer to find elsewhere and if so where?
4. Do you ever click on banner ads or advertisements?
5. Would any of you be interested in helping out by posting reviews, news, etc.?

Thanks for your time and honesty.

Two For Tuesday-Two Bands To Burn One(Two) To-Cosmic Android/Bull Dyke Rodeo

Todays "Two Band(s) To Burn One(Two) To" are Cosmic Android from Amsterdam and Bull Dyke Rodeo from Wisconsin.

Let's start with Cosmic Android. Cosmic Android is an Amsterdam based stoner-grunge-rock trio consisting of dutch rock'n'roll poet Tjø van Zuijlen on vocals and bass, guitarist Paul Geerts and Suzan Rooijers (Facehugger, Unabomber) on drums. Influences include bands such as Fu Manchu, Kyuss, the Melvins and Alice in Chains.

Next up is Bull Dyke Rodeo:

Scumbags. A blue sky. A jungle. Emerging from the Midwest, 80’s sci-fi movies, and obscene levels of volume, BULL DYKE RODEO have been penning doom rock hymns since the release of 2005’s tech-sludge The Murphy EP. A full length Robocop-themed album showed up two years later in the form of Jailbreak. Recorded at their own zlobStudios and featuring five tracks of hazy, pummeling time-signature grooves (“Bitches Leave,” “State of the Art Bang-Bang”), Sabbath-by-way-of-Kyuss structures and riffs (“Scumbags See the Judge on Monday Morning”), and stoner metal post-rock (“Directive 4,” “Love Theme From Delta City”), the instrumental Jailbreak made way for the band’s masterpiece: bull dyke rodeo II: dykefuge.

Also recorded at the illustrious zlobStudios, 2009’s bdrII found the band calling on yet another Paul Verhoeven film for inspiration—the monstrous Total Recall. In addition to calling on the power of Arnold, the band embraced their inner Thin Lizzy, letting the twin leads of Werner and Cody Sand to run amok and strike at will, on anything from the scorching, hook-laden “See You At the Party, Richter” to the sprawling doom epic “Sue Me, Dickhead.” Proving himself to be as versatile as he is solid, drummer Kurt Urbain goes from tender to terror in the gigantic closing track “Three Breasted Ballad” and even gets a little funky on the bouncing, catchy fuzz-anthem “Pyramid Mine.” Perhaps the track “Blue Sky On Mars” is a representation of the album itself: space, ADDoom thrash, and—above all else—density.

BULL DYKE RODEO are currently working on their third album, tentatively about the film Predator, and an EP of up-tempo boogie-metal about the movie Kingpin.

Heavy Planet Updates

First off, I want to thank everyone for being loyal readers. Secondly, thanks for your patience as I am not able to post as frequently as I would like. Since I have a backlog of bands in dire need of free promotion, I am going to run a feature called "Two For Tuesday" every Tuesday , it will feature not one but two bands to burn one to. You may burn one for each band if you so desire. In the meantime, here is a free MP3 to check out.

A Heavy Metal Salute to Heavy Metal Band Name Origins

Ever wonder how or why your favorite band is named what it is? This dude named Blair Gibson just released a book titled "A Heavy Metal Salute to Heavy Metal Band Name Origins". The book has 542 bands ranging from Black Metal to Stoner Rock. The author contacted each band through their MySpace and other personal websites to get each band name's origin. Here is page 1 from the book:

"13TH FLOOR EVELATORS

The 13th Floor Elevators were a combination of two groups from Texas, the Lingsmen and the Spades. The name was chosen as a result of an attempt on the part of Tommy Hall, who played electric jug and wrote most of the lyrics, to project the idea of "Christ consciousness" and a higher level of awareness. There is also an Eastern religion reference such as Buddhism for enlightenment and finally the Masonic pyramid includes 13 levels on the reverse of the U.S. one dollar. Also, buildings in the U.S. do not include a 13th floor which implies a level yet to be defined or that does not yet exist. Danny Thomas

18 SPEED TRANNY

At the time, we were called Mind Charger but we were not content with that. We were in Toronto to do a show at Club 360, and we got in a day early. A woman named Deanna who we had been in contact with through her website stonerrockchick.com, had offered to show us around town. She took us to a bar called the Bovine Sex Club to see some punk bands. At the club we noticed this huge muscle bound woman/man, we weren't sure because it was dressed like a woman, but we started messing with our bass player, saying stuff like "it's checking you out man" and "it digs you" you know, just fucking around. Anyway, back at the hotel when we were all fucked up, and high, the subject of that chick/dude came up again, and our bass player who at the time had a job moving heavy equipment with a semi, had blurted out in broken English (he's Polish) something about that chick/dude at the bar being an 18 Speed Tranny, and we almost pissed ourselves laughing. We thought it had a ring to it, so we made it our name. Ken

3 INCHES OF BLOOD

One of the band member's brothers cut himself and exaggerated the story in regards to how much blood there was. Someone heard him say “three inches of blood,” and thought it be a good band name.

35007

35007 was first called A Loose Conspiracy, a loose group of people making loose music. The band was simply called Loose and if you read that upside down, it spells 35007. Sander"

A very interesting read.

New Band To Burn One To-Dirt Communion

"For some bands, metal is nothing more than a career move, a uniform to gain fame. That isn’t the case with Dirt Communion, a groove-meets-doom band from Reno Nevada that write and play like true fans. Dirt Communion plays what they would want to hear themselves if they were in the audience. Because of that, they are standing out among the metal-by-numbers crowd.

Luckily for them, others agree. This includes fellow fans and the local press. As the Reno News and Review said, “Any listener who appreciates pure, unadulterated, classic metal riffage, can’t do anything but bang his head with approval.”

This group of Reno vets started in fall 2007 when guitarist Tony Ashworth and drummer Logan Spurling decided to form a band with Southern drive and a dirty downbeat. There wasn’t really a band like that in Reno. Tony asked friend and prominent local guitarist Eric Stangeland to join up and the trio started writing songs soon after.

It took well over a year to find others committed to Dirt Communion, but things settled in fall 2008. That summer, Eric’s friend, vocalist Mark Earnest, was singing Sabbath covers with another local metal band. Eric and Tony then asked him to join. Still needing a bassist, Mark asked his friend Dan Bishop to complete the lineup. As it turned out, Dan also wanted to play this style of metal.

From the get-go, Dirt Communion brought together catchy riffage, earthshaking tone and a dynamic stage show to quickly earn a devoted Reno following. Encouraged by this galloping start, Dirt Communion recorded with local engineer Chris Finley and decided to release a digital EP in summer 2009, with another digital-only EP to follow later in the year. Both EPs will be on a combined CD release in early 2010. Dirt Communion also plans to play outside of Reno, with California, Nebraska and Colorado shows already on the books."

Therefore, Dirt Communion is the "New Band To Burn One To" today. Check it! This is some killer shit!

Review:

"Good southern sludge from western Nevada seems about as likely as a new Michael Jackson/Edward Kennedy duet album, but goldarnit, I can't deny the soul evinced by Reno's Dirt Communion. The band's bluesy sludge touchstones -- Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Kyuss -- are pretty obvious. So is their talent. This stuff requires a tightrope walk down the line between behind-the-beat sloppiness and deep-pocket groove, and Dirt Communion get it right. They specialize in dirty rhythmic swagger -- songs like "A Trip to the Slaughterhouse," "Bombed (Last Call)" and "Rebuilt for Speed" swing titanium ballsack riffs low and slow, with a ragged guitar solo 3/4 of the way through the latter that twirls frantically and dissolves into distortion. Dirt Communion write better boogies than songs, and singer Mark Earnest (discovered while singing "Fairies Wear Boots" in a Reno cover band, natch) occasionally lives up to his last name too well, considering the nastiness of the music. Didn't you heed pappy Anselmo's lessons about the benefits of cigarettes and thick coatings of phlegm? But ya know, if I ran into Dirt Communion playing in a bar somewhere, I'd stick around to listen to their whole set. That's more than I can say for a lot of signed metal bands that I'd pay to see. I like my sludge metal like I like my women: with a fat bottom end. Hey-o!!!" (Etan Rosenbloom - Cerebral Metalhead.com)

New Band To Burn One To-Domes Of Silence

The "New Band To Burn One To" is Domes Of Silence from the U.K.

After the exploratory period of acclaimed first album, "Mescaline", the UK based Domes of Silence have got cozy with riff based brutality. Vocalist Sean Parkin has embraced the raw unpleasant truth giving a message of personal pain backed up with sludge roots grind rock. This deep stone core sits astride a raw garage template and hollers defiance and indifference.

Domes of Silence formed in the last year of the 20th century but the important thing is in 2009 the Domes have distilled down to the purest form. A simple drum kit locks Alex Lane into the grind bass of brother Charles. Long time producer and collaborator Richard Aitken joins Carl Bickley on guitar via two fuzzbass amps for a final 15 inch coned assault on the deep.

Domes of Silence have survived. Conflict, indifference, illness, addiction and multiple lineups. Issues. The truth is that before 2009 the Domes were searching.
Now they have found. Hot and bruised. The veneer of studio gizmos have been stripped back to reveal a grown up, honest and heavier sound. Since their first album - Domes of Silence have concentrated on developing a steady, unflinching and dead eyed live sound. It was only after this live "right of passage" and enlightenment that they decided to go back into the studio. They sit in the same stone circle as Lowrider, Clutch and Kyuss but with no designs on cloning. They take cues from the Doors and, fuck it, let's throw in Raw Power era Stooges - but they aren't retro wannabes. Eclectic? You bet - but these sounds are what you'll find on the Domes of Silence'
turntable ...... psalmic psychedelia? brutal beat? hot heat?........... the Domes of Silence.
