New Releases For Tuesday 3/16/2010

Here are today's new releases.

Landmine Marathon-"Sovereign Descent" (Prosthetic)

"2010 album from Phoenix, Arizona's Landmine Marathon. Sovereign Descent is a sonic representation of their world: scorched, desolate, and angry as hell. The album was recorded at guitarist Ryan Butler's Arcane Digital Recording Studios, where he's recorded past efforts from the band, as well as Misery Index, Phobia, The Funeral Pyre and many others. The album was mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (Converge, Hatebreed, Dillinger Escape Plan) and features cover art by acclaimed artist Dan Seagrove (entombed, Dismember, Morbid Angel, Suffocation)."

16-"Drop Out" (Relapse)

"The beastly, throbbing riffs and tortured screams of 16's now-legendary Drop Out album sent shockwaves through the international music scene upon its '96 release. It's obvious why over a decade later; the band made visceral anguish, angst, and disillusionment sound downright anthemic. 16 put an ugly, angry face on disenfranchised youth and Drop Out became a touchstone and soundtrack for the next generation of heavy rock trail blazers and trendsetters."

16-"Curves That Kick" (Relapse)

"Curves That Kick, the long out-of-print debut album from SoCal quartet 16, threw the doors open to a new, post-Helmet/AmRep sound of discordance and discontent. Originally released on Pushead's Bacteria Sour label in '93, the album exposed the nascent beginnings of the soon-to-be infamous quartet. As Curves That Kick proved then and underscores now in its remixed and remastered form, 16 is its own unique, belligerent human animal."

Fireball Ministry-"Self-Titled" (RED)

"From the beginning, Fireball Ministry have aggressively steered clear of all manner of trends and cliques, opting instead to follow the rock n roll heart that has been the core for over a decade. Their analog-soaked, bottom-heavy swirl of tunes that tips a hat toward the best of the past without sounding like a mere retread or novelty. Famously described as Sabbath partying with Priest and Grand Funk Railroad, there's no nonsense in the Fireball camp."

Triclops!-"Helpers On The Other Side" (Alternative Tentacle)

"2010 release from the Bay Area Prog Acid Punk rockers. Adding flourishes to the formula established on their debut Out of Africa, Triclops! continues its assault on all pretenders to the Punk/Psych/Prog throne. The sound on this album is varied, but one might say it's akin to Firehose crossing streams with Goblin in an acid vat. There's even an acoustic bridge in "With SARS, I'll Ride the Wind" that sounds like a fever-warbled Classic Rock jammer. Triclops! is an Acid-Punk version of avant-garde classical composition with cinematic textures--an absurdist soundscape replete with comedic relief that acknowledges its own pure ridiculousness"

New Releases For 3/9/2010

Here is the only new release that I saw this week.

Year Long Disaster-"Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed" (Volcom)

"On its second full-length, this Cali trio makes a convincing claim to be a modern Soundgarden, consistently locating both deep pockets and trippy cloud-patterns for their blooze-howled sludge. Following a brief but doomful instrumental title intro, "Show Me Your Teeth" kicks things off celebrating the carrying of firearms in the city. Six-minute centerpiece "Sparrow Hill" locks into the set's most Sabbath-like swing; "Seven of Swords" and "Foggy Bottom" pastorally search for black holes in the winter sun. They save their fastest riffing for the aptly named "Cyclone," at album's end." (Chuck Eddy)

New Releases For Tuesday February 23, 2010

Here are a few new releases for February 23, 2010.

High On Fire-"Snakes For The Divine" (Koch)

High On Fire return with one of the most highly anticipated release of 2010. Called 'one of 50 records you must hear in 2010' by Kerrang! Magazine, Snakes For The Divine is High On Fire's finest release to date and the one that will catapult them to the next level of their career. Pre-release touring with Dethklock has lit the fuse for the band who are poised to be one of the biggest stories in Hard music in 2010.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

All Time High-"Friends in High Places" (Small Stone Records)

If you were to take one thing away from their debut album, Seattle's All Time High would want it to be this: Seattle rock is not dead! Formed in 2005, the men of All Time High are veterans of considerable pedigree. Having spent the last decade cutting their teeth playing in bands (VALIS, Kitty Kitty, Gardener) alongside some of the biggest and most recognizable names in the Northwest's music scene--and having released albums on labels as notable as Sub Pop, Man's Ruin, and Small Stone--All Time High aren't content to rest on their laurels. Since their inception All Time High have been steadfast in the trenches, playing shows with the likes of Helios Creed/Chrome, Sound of Urchin, The Spores, Mos Generator, and The Valley. Their debut long-player, the aptly titled 12-song Friends in High Places, was recorded in an unadulterated 5-day session with legendary Seattle producer Jack Endino and features more than a few surprise guests.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Church Of Misery-"Live At Roadburn" (Import)

2010 live release from Japan's premier Stoner/Sludge rockers. The night was recorded in multi track and was mixed and mastered by Marcel van de Vondervoort of Torture Garden Studio fame. After releases by Wolves In the Throne Room (2008) and Year Of No Light (2008), Church Of Misery Live at Roadburn 2009 is the third installment in our live series. Eight tracks. Roadburn.

New Releases For 2/2/2010

Here are the new releases for 2/2/2010.

Priestess-"Prior To The Fire"

"After much industry ballyhoo Priestess released in 2004 what is widely regarded as one of Canada's greatest hard rock debuts ever Hello Master. Unlike most hard rock/metal bands that relied solely on ballast and blast to sear their message into gray matter Priestess had a special trick up their sleeve they could actually write a song that could walk the rope between being infectious and downright viscous."

---------------------------------------------------------------
Skullflower-"Strange Keys to Untune Gods' Firmament"

"2010 two CD release from the British Industrial/Experimental band led by Matthew Bower. Strange Keys To Untune Gods' Firmament evokes Wagnerian sonic bombast, a Nietzchean worldview, and a warlike cry of rebellion against the false, encased in a whirlwind both psychotropic and psychoacoustic. Each spin brings new themes to the forefront. Not easy listening by anyone's standards, Strange Keys is not for the faint of heart--but those willing to submit and immerse themselves in the deep, thick waters of self-transformation will be greatly rewarded."

---------------------------------------------------------------

Creature With the Atom Brain-"Transylvania"

"Creature with the Atom Brain was founded as a one-man home recording project by Belgian Aldo Struyf in between stints touring with Mark Lanegan and his own band, the Millionaires. Now morphed into a full time project, Creature s sophomore album, Transylvania, it is actually their debut North American release. Transylvania finds the band going in a more melodic and reflective direction by while simultaneously maintaining their musical core as defined by references to psychedelia, 70s prog, Hawkwind, 13th Floor Elevators, July and Erkin Koray, as paired with African rhythms; a striking stand-out from most contemporary independent music.

Bringing an additional rock pedigree along with credibility is Chris Goss's mix of Transylvania the man in the producer and engineer s seat for bands like Masters Of Reality, Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. And while the album credits list additional collaborations with Mark Lanegan and Mr. Chris Goss, Transylvania stands on its own merits as well."

---------------------------------------------------------------

Droids Attack-"Must Destroy"

"Droids Attack long anticipated third album. A nine song rift fest of road tested metal anthems previously unmatched."

New Release Tuesday-11/24/2009

There are not too many New Releases out this week due to the fact that it is nearing the end of the year, but here is one that may be of some interest to you guys.

Megasus-Megasus(EP)(20 Buck Spin)

2009 debut from the Providence, Rhode Island outfit. Riding forth like thunderbolts cast from the hammer of Thor, the eight hooves of the Megasus burn a trail of ice across the winter sky. Combining elements of Heavy Metal titans like High On Fire, Slayer, Pentagram, and Karp, Megasus delivers a debut of amazing power and volume with riff after riff of neckbreaking Metal fury.

Review:

"This is the debut album from filling-rattling metal Providence-based supergroup Megasus. "Swords", "Hexes/Szaadek" and "Iron Mountain" all are over six minutes long, combining slow dirge, distorted blood curdling screams, massive riffs and furious double kick pedal mayhem. At some points, I thought of a gonzo Saint Vitus. But on top of the music, this has one of the most impressive vinyl packaging ever to pass through these hands. I doubt I could withstand their live show, as whenever I see the "No Wimps" sign I always turn around and go home"(75orLess)

Super, Ultra, Mega Heavy New Crucial Blast Releases on the Way

Crucial Blast Records is proud to announce the next two additions to their arsenal of aural oppression...

THE HUMAN QUENA ORCHESTRA - The Politics of the Irredeemable CD
Release date: 4/21/2009

We will be releasing The Politics of the Irredeemable, the second album from THE HUMAN QUENA ORCHESTRA in April. Some of you might have heard this pulverizing industrial-doom duo on their first disc, Means Without Ends, that came out a couple of years ago on Daft Alliance. If you did, then you`re already schooled in how bleak and devastating the soundwaves get from the ORCHESTRA. You know us - we like it heavy. And when these guys sent us a copy of their initial recordings for this album, their immense droneological blackness and eschatological nightmares knocked us f`ing flat. Politics is one long, dead stare into the imminent collapse of the human species, and I`m banking on this being one of the heaviest releases - both in tone and in sound - that Crucial Blast will be releasing in 2009.

HUMAN QUENA ORCHESTRA first took shape as a solo project from Ryan Unks, who had previously played guitar in the final lineup of the Pittsburgh metal band CREATION IS CRUCIFIXION. After moving from CIC, Unks began to work on a new project that would incorporate elements of black metal, crushing drone music, extreme psychotropic noise and psychedelic/krautrock influences into a sound that would be much heavier any of his previous projects. The first album from HUMAN QUENA ORCHESTRA was released in 2007 on Daft Alliance; Means Without Ends was a disturbing, introspective slab of blackened industrial doom that stood out in stark contrast from the rest of the slow n` low extreme doom scene, utilizing layers of harsh textured distortion and electronics to create a caustic form of monstrous doom that shared as much of industrial music`s cold, machine-like aesthetic as it did the ultra-slow riffage of the most extreme variants of doom metal. At the same time that the bands debut was taking shape, Unks was joined by another former member of CREATION IS CRUCIFIXION, Nathan Berlinguette (who was also a member of the dark ambient project M.KOURIE and the DEATHDRONE DUO 5/5/2000). With the addition of Berlinguette`s skilled application of dark ambience and expansive soundscapes, HUMAN QUENA ORCHESTRA began to move into even more textured territory which has culminated with the second HQO full-length, The Politics of the Irredeemable, a series of apocalyptic visions and epiphanies of end time realization, prophetic screeds that look to a future rendered pustulent and war-stricken by the failed machinations of the human race, presented as six chapters that enter your consciousness through a delivery system of extreme industrial dread. The Politics of the Irredeemable is crushing and oppressive, a crawl through abstract fields of low-end sound that move from punishing blasts of ultra-heavy machine-doom and earth-shaking tectonic riffs, to thick fogs of black electronic ambiance that shimmer with subsonic pulses and celestial drones, the presence of malevolent electricity crackling in the air around the lumbering, nightmarish electro-sludge monstrosity of the HUMAN QUENA ORCHESTRA. And at the same time, there are passages of immense beauty on this album that lurk at the peripheries of HQO`s malevolent crush; the track "Aspirations" for instance, where pummeling slow-motion industrial percussions grinds in an infinite loop beneath a swirling nightsky of kosmiche synthesizers and heavenly, blissed-out ambiance, the drums becoming like distant mortar blasts heard over the horizon as terrified screams ring out and stars fall dead from the skies. This is seriously apocalyptic deathmachine grind ambiance.

OVERMARS - Born Again CD
Release date: 6/09/2009

Previously released through the French label Appease Me overseen by members of BLUT AUS NORD, Born Again is the latest full length from the French sludge band OVERMARS, a single album-long piece that descends deep into themes of self-immolation, horror, and rebirth. France`s OVERMARS have already established their atmospheric, electronically-tainted sludge-metal sound with their previous splits with DONEFOR,ISCARIOTE, FUGÜE, and ICOS, and their excellent 2005 album Affliction, Endocrine...Vertigo, but Born Again is something new from the band; this forty-minute epic moves from pulverizing industrial dirge blanketed with heavily textured layers of guitar and fearsome guttural roars intermixed with captivating female vocals, to passages of haunting dark ambiance and bottom-heavy churn, and a magisterial finale that stretches gloom-ridden, moody riffage, vaporous electronics and dramatic singing out over the song`s last fifteen minutes, building into an earth-shaking crescendo. Immensely bleak and heavy, Born Again brings together elements of GODFLESH`s industrial pummel, black metal, tribal dirge , the crushing nihilism of SWANS, death metal, and psychedelia into an austere sound of their own that moves them even further away from the NEUROSIS comparisons that have surrounded their earlier releases. As soon as I heard this, it became one of my new favorite French metal albums. We are doing a deluxe CD edition for the US release of the album through Crucial Blast, with different packaging than the original Appease Me release, and we`ll be putting together some other cool stuff for the release of Born Again here in the US. The band is also looking at touring here in the States later in 2009, and I`ll be posting information on that as it comes together. In the meantime, here are a couple of MP3 samples from Born Again for you to check out:
