Band Submission: Ocelot-Psych/Rock/Blues From San Diego, CA

Band Name: Ocelot
Genre: Psych/ Rock/ Blues
Location: San Diego, CA
Brief Bio/Description: Hailing from the inbred musical community of north county San Diego, Ocelot mixes palatable psychedelia and old-attitude rock and roll. Ocelot began with the creative and personal entwining of James Upton, and his ghostly reincarnations of heavy blues riffs, and Stephanie Brown, whose abstracted tales of everyday tribulations are sung in a soulful mezzo-soprano with just a sip of Jack Daniel's.

After a slew of quiet restaurant shows and bar gigs, Ocelot found its rhythmic voice with the interlocking jello-bounce of bassist Kyre Wilcox's dextrous fingers, whose steady groove is covered in the drumstick shards and frenzied sweat of drummer Andrew Ware, and is steeped in the lush, manic soundscapes of Evan Wenskay's keyboard and Echoplex loops. Together they took to local stages, charming the ears of local promoters, and catching the eye of Studio West engineer Daniel Bourget.
Their new EP is from an off-hours live session at Studio West in Rancho Bernardo.
Band Members:
Stephanie Brown- Vocals/ Harmonica
James Upton- Guitar
Kyre Wilcox- Bass
Andrew Ware- Drums

Seven Inches o' Red Wizard

I'm no fidelity purist. Really, I'm not. As my vinyl stacks expand, I'm regularly comforted by that crackle, the persistent "pop and hiss" vinyl produces. And those assholes that say it's just a myth, that digital actually sounds better than the coziest of sonic vehicles because no sound is lost or interrupted... Who knows, maybe they're right. But I know what I hear. And perhaps the pops and hisses only result from nicks and scratches, dusted from ages of sitting at sixty degrees when your old man decided he was tired of your shit and wanted high school out of his memory. I don't care.

I can't argue for or against vinyl or digital. When one sounds mossy and organic, the other sounds crisp and modern. Test convenience versus nostalgia, and it's a matter of preference. But when San Diego's Red Wizard dealt three tracks on seven inches of white wax, I knew digital was getting kicked at its knees. Some tracks, some bands simply can't reach their full scope through a pair of headphones. They need to blast from speakers, beyond greasy beards, between lusterless locks and into your hazy minds. The experience only comes full circle with a velvet sidecar; only vinyl's gonna suffice, brother. So about those seven inches...

On these three tracks o' cock-'n-roll, complete with guitar stutter and thunderous drums cascading under a torrid bass clip, Red Wizard wanna make your panties drip through just a bit more. I've been to San Diego, and the glamorous pussy could inspire any stoner rocker to thrust up a bit. Piledriver is that steadily-driven guitar cruise glazed over with slick plucks. All you need is a barroom drawl and some hard repetition under the guise of throwback, and confidence bulges through tight, beer-soaked denim. Shitbrainz is fuzzier, hastier, shiftier... Guitars sway through decades past as Baucum's pipes let themselves go. Blending classic nods with contemporary middle-finger swagger comes all-too-easily for these dudes, tickling clouds with guitar-tongues and cruising toward a sticky, delicious closing putsch.

But fucking hell, Red Wizard had to pull out their dicks and tackle one of Sabbath's finest. Their slower, more distant homage to Birmingham's pioneers sticks to The Wizard's bare bones, but it also has no problem letting itself drift. There's more space, more expanse, and ultimately more mind-melt. This is just gruff fun, and to do it without losing any edge off the original is no small feat. And oh... that harmonica! Flesh and tendon are all but stripped and draped, but the gaps haven't been merely filled; they've been flattened.

Good luck prying this from your old man's clutches once he gets a taste. In fact, just leave him in the dark for this one. His blood pressure's high enough already. Check out STB Records at noon on March 28th to snag this in red or white.

THREE FOR THURSDAY: Desert Suns, Village, Monsternaut

For whatever the reason, there is that certain something in a band that stands out and makes them a bit unique in their own way. For the most part, the bands in this genre have a lot of similarities and tend to start to sound a lot alike. In this post I have featured three bands that have worked their way deep into my psyche and will not let go. With that being said, please enjoy the following three amazing bands!

Desert Suns-With old school flair and charisma this band from San Diego, CA., summons up a sun-drenched haze of doomy riffs, touches of prog and heavy desert groove. Favorite tracks: "Burning Temples", "Space Pussy" and "Run Through My Roots".

Facebook

Village- Call me a sucker for instrumental stoner music, but this band hailing from Philadelphia, PA does it right. There is a certain beauty in the melodies that perks up and astonishes my ears. The muddied guitar tone is striking and the organ gives the feeling of evil. Only one other band has done it right in recent years as well as these guys and that is Tumbleweed Dealer. Icing on the cake would be a full-length. Favorite tracks: The entire EP.

Monsternaut-How can you go wrong with stoner riffs over a revving motor to introduce you to a band? The fuzz on this EP is fucking glorious. This band hails from Kerava, Finland and is pretty much just straight up Stoner Rock. Obviously influenced by the almighty Fu Manchu amongst others, the band tears up the asphalt with their high octane, riff-driven grooves. The singer for some reason reminds me of Iggy Pop. Favorite tracks: "Dog Town", "Mountain Doom" and "Black Horizon".

New Band To Burn One To: AMIGO

HEAVY PLANET presents...AMIGO!

BAND BIO:

Influenced by the lush palms, rural canyons, undulating landscapes, and little cliffs that make up the pseudo desert that is San Diego, Amigo was born. Led by front man Jeff Podeszwik, Amigo is a riff based rock band with heavy hooks, melodic vocals and fuzz driven guitars. Whether it be a tale of tragedy, a practice in prose, an untold story, or a rumor in the school hall, instructions have been given to let you in on these secrets. After all....that's what friends do. THOUGHTS:

"As the sweltering heat of the California sunshine warms your skin, the heavy desert groove of San Diego rockers Amigo rattles your skull. With an abundance of sun-kissed riffs and catchy hooks, the band hits cruise control and settles into a nice mid-tempo groove on their latest self-titled EP. Opener "Cosmo Blaster" is a fuzz-heavy romp that immediately gained my attention with their ode to desert/stoner kings Kyuss and Fu Manchu. "Mojave Sol" is a slick swaying rocker with a sound reminiscent of lets say, Urge Overkill? "How Wet Can You Get?" has a light and airy feel but the warm heavy fuzz ultimately steals the show. The EP ends with a killer live version of fan favorite "Cosmo Blaster". Very cool band with huge upside!"

Zac's "Double Dose": Howl / Tar Halos

Howl: Bloodlines

Howl are a five piece band from Rhode Island who have transformed the sub-conscious brain waves that our meager minds use to create nightmares into sound-waves... burdened, doom-laden, sludgy sound-waves. This isn't Howl's first rodeo though, they released a respectable full length LP (with some of the best cover art ever) a few years ago entitled Full Of Hell. If you aren't familar with that release, now is the time to check it out. Why? Because the Rhode Island boys will be releasing their sophomore follow up at the end of April, entitled Bloodlines, and this will give you, as a listener, just enough time to become familar with what Howl has done and where they are headed.

Immediately upon pushing play I realize that Bloodlines is a completely new, faster paced, monster that has grown apart from Full Of Hell. Howl certainly have changed their style, everything is more extreme, although not necessarily heavier. You see, to this listener, Full Of Hell had an ancient, medieval, dark ages sort of feel... stones, fire and brimstone style of heavy (which I greatly enjoyed, Full Of Hell was on my Top 2010 list). Bloodlines blasts through those stones from ages ago with the intensity of a mechanized weapon. I guess the guys have departed from the classic doom end of the spectrum and reinforced with doses of thrash, groove and even some blackend metal. Don't let this shy you away from Bloodlines though, Howl stay RIFF-centric. I believe that Howl's dedicated touring schedule with some killer new wave metal bands (Black Tusk, Kylesa, Red Fang and Skeletonwitch) have strongly influenced the Rhode Island quintet aiding in their evolution to Bloodlines. In place of that archaic sound is a clean and clear production. The percussion side has added blast beats to the foregoing ancestral tone and the vocals are more wretched and more angry. So, there you have it a fresh, fast, and scary extreme release from a band that's not afraid to step outside of their box. Check out their lyrical video for Attrition below and if interested Relapse is taking pre-orders here.

Tar Halos: Winehand

This weeks second dose, Tar Halos, are a heavily psychedelic, rock band, whom with the power of disconcerting lyrical passages, harken back to the Syd Barrett days of Pink Floyd. The five-piece call San Diego head-quarters and prefer "old drum machines over young drummers". This becomes plainly noticeable through Winehand. The beat of the percussion and overall electronic nature build an oxymoronic vibe of despondent ecstasy. My favorite track is Arrival of the Second Center Moon, be sure to listen below. The track is immediate, as if your conscience is roused to the chaos of a blasting alarm at the moment your space-craft is losing pressure through a tremendous hole in its hull. This is the track I find the greatest correlation to old 'Floyd's cosmic poetry. The alarm continues to alter your thought process throughout the entire song while a steady beat of percussion inflame a bravery within the depths of your soul. The vocals are buried and glazed over giving the track a truly '60s psych vibe and the guitars have a deserted and arid tone creating a confusing sensation. Quite the unique and excellent track... Quite the unique and excellent album. Get a copy from Volar Records or download at bandcamp and be sure to check out Volar's video for Broken Clocks here.

JOY-New Band To Burn One To

Heavy Planet presents...today's "New Band To Burn One To"-JOY!

Bio:

Joy is the newest, loudest tune meltin' power-trio-trip band to come screaming outta Southern California. Since their formation in 2010, Zachary Oakley (Vox, G), Trevor Mast (B), and Taylor Charter (DR) have dialed in a spaced-out-sonic-groove-ride all their own. Their live shows conjure musical spirits of the past in the form of improv-jams and unapologetic volumes and wild stage energy. Fans of Blue Cheer, Cream, Jimi, acid and freestyle-psych take note: JOY will have their first full-length out early in the year 2012 on San Diegan label Cavepunk Records.

Thoughts:

"One word that truly describes this band: Intense. This power trio from San Diego simply known as JOY steps on the gas and never lets up. With reach for the sun guitar soloing, bouncy moving bass lines, and a hypnotic groove, JOY takes their cue from many of the heavy psych legends of the seventies. I would imagine seeing these guys play live would be an absolutely exhilarating experience."
