Legendary Boston sludge/doom metal band GRIEF has called it quits. Bassist Eric C. Harrison states, "Our reasons for disbanding are our reasons. We have chosen not to get into it but it may or may not include the following reasons.
* Jeff [Hayward; vocals, guitar] has finally become Rip Van Winkle and will be asleep for the next 50 years.
* Ray [McCaffrey; drums] has finally eaten so much that he can not fit out of the door to his house and is unable to leave home
* John [Heidenrich; guitar, vocals] has become so death metal that we' d have to actually be ghosts to jam with him and none of us feel like it.
* Eric finally became an actual dog and has not learned how to play bass or do artwork with his paws.
"We will not be playing the Maryland Deathfest in May of 2009.
"We're sorry for anyone that this disappoints, but whatever. Shit happens."
GRIEF was founded in 1991 by DISRUPT guitarist Terry Savastano and drummer Randy Odierno (who later switched to bass). They broke up in 2001 mainly due to drummer problems. They also cited what they called a "hostile environment for doom metal bands." They reunited for the first time in July 2005 to play a number of live shows.

Album Of The Day-Grief-"Miserably Ever After" (1996)
The Album Of The Day is "Miserably Ever After" by Doom legends Grief.
Review:
These crusty doom legends turned in a sledgehammer to the face with Miserably Ever After. Since way before it was cool to play slow music for fans of the hyper speed worlds of death metal, grindcore, power violence, and crust, Grief have been pounding out slow, doomy, heavy brutality with screaming vocal stylings that borrow heavily from the early grindcore roots of the early members. Laying out the groundwork early on for other early-'90s bands like Cavity, Iron Monkey, Floor, and Eyehategod, Grief had a challenge to live up to -- to attempt equal the strength of each previous album. Well, this album did that, and more. Grief can be credited with heavily impacting the doom scene as well as being inspired by it, with the influence of Black Sabbath and Los Angeles doom kings Saint Vitus more than apparent. And with a telltale Vitus cover ("Angry Man") and a bleak landscape of alienation, drug and alcohol abuse, misanthropy, and betrayal throughout every song, each chord is like a nuclear explosion of depression. (Paul Kott, AMG)
Track Listing:
01. One Of Those Days
02. Low Life
03. Nuisance
04. Angry Man
05. Miserably Ever After
06. Straight-Edge Closed Mind
07. Why Should You Care?
