Doom Hit: "THE WIRING - "WITHDRAWAL FROM CONTINUOUS CIRCULATION"

I'm always amazed when just two musicians are able to pull off the sound of four. This duo from Wiesbsden, Germany lay down some raunchy, ebon tar, paving a road of grim shadows, black cowled fear, and ancient ability while conjuring their magics of amplified, gargantuan doom, thickly clabberous, and darkly spellbinding.

QUICK HIT: Blackbird Hill - MIdday Moonlight (maxi)

May 5th is the official release date for Blackbird Hill's latest EP, "Midday Moonlight (maxi)", but the music is available for streaming a day early on their bandcamp page. This duo from Bordeaux, France are master blues rock craftsmen, expertly cobbling together powerful tunes of melodious amplification with their single guitar, single trap set, two voices, as well as a knack for engaging melodies and powerful hooks. Their songs range from haunting ballads to rip-roaring rockers, all supremely crafted and heartily delivered. If you listen today, hopefully you'll return tomorrow and download this gem of a collection.

New Band To Burn One To: Lousy Riders

Toronto, Canada, duo Lousy Riders are about to be one of your new favourite bands. The stoner blues band have just released an EP Worst Is Yet To Come, and it is a serious joyous assault on your ears. Lead vocalist Snow carries a charging vocal as her voice powers over the chords creating a heavy stoner rock vibe as the driving guitar and drums riffs heavy while entwining with stunning blues-heavy song structures.

Get into Lousy Riders now, as stunning songs like ‘Dead End’ can’t stay unnoticed for long. An excellent band with great things ahead of them.

Song of the Day-The Blue Stones-"Be My Fire"

"Be My Fire" is taken off of the latest release "Black Holes". Sometimes choosing one song off an album to feature can be a daunting task, but due to my short attention span these days that's all that it will allow me. The Blue Stones are a great band and "Be My Fire" is a great song. Reminiscent of other rock duos such as Royal Blood and The Black Keys, this two-piece band has chosen somewhat of a different path. They have chosen a much warmer and fuzzier sound to go along with their escalating, exhilarating and extremely catchy brand of blues-inspired rock. This is hands down one of my favorite rock albums of the year. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

LP Review: Shaft by El Cam

Hailing from the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, this Karma To Burn loving duo have gone full throttle on their second release, Shaft, following 2013’s Orchard, rammed with razor sharp riffs, doused in fuzzed out tones to entice the lovers of the heavy, and lovers of the melodic, these French instrumentalists have created a record which is worth your attention.

Being a duo is no longer a gimmick, and when the noise created by the two people is as loud and as full as these guys, you can never tell that the band are lacking any other instrumentation, and that is a testament to how good a musicians Mat (Drums) and Jey (Guitar) are (plus the record was recorded live). Comparisons will be rife with Karma To Burn (as I’ve already done) because they’re an instrumental stoner band, but the key to El Cam is in the way that they execute their songs, instead of slightly drawn out numbers that take a while to get going, these guys go straight for the kill. The record opens with the fuzz loving ‘Life in The Ruts’ with its downturned guitar riffing slicing you from top to bottom, then ‘Red Guts’ builds up momentum before an almighty devastating implosion of guitar riffs crushes your face with a joyous grin, and ‘Reeks of Firedamp’ has a devastating effect on your already shattered body, and we’re only onto track three!

The rest of the record continues at the gloriously energetic pace that the duo have set from the start, with each of the six songs on show hiding huge riffs hidden behind other riffs, and song structures that keep you following the story of the song, to ride its flow, and that’s what all good instrumental music should do, not to  alienate, bore, or work as background music, El Cam demand that you pay attention to each and every riff, like it was a sermon from the Gods themselves.

New Band To Burn One To: New Valley Wolves

Dublin heavy blues Rock’n’Roll duo New Valley Wolves may have formed in 2012, but they have slowly creeped into the forefront of our consciousness with their mighty riff laden bouncy rock, and now this month sees the release of their debut record Refusal Is Our Weapon, with much interest from our awaited eardrums.

The Irish double act (Jonny Lucey on guitar/vocals, and Baz Joyce on drums) will no doubt be compared to rising UK rockers Royal Blood with their sense of slightly pop orientated rock/stoner/blues songs, but they joyfully throw in elements of Clutch and QOTSA just so you know where their intentions lie. With equal parts riffing, dancing, and head banging, New Valley Wolves are a band to get seriously excited about!

Check out their video for their new song 'Crooked Sea' below.

EP Review: 'Galactic Triceratops' by VAILS

At a quarter of the way through 2015, there has been a large amount of heavy classic rock influenced stoner passing through Heavy Planet towers, and as sweet as a lot of it is, we’ve just been waiting for something to shake things up, tear us a new one, bring us face to face with an otherworldly brutality of sludgyness: thank fuck for VAILS!

It has only been six months since their blistering two song demo was spread thick for us to hear, and now the ever growing superb label When Planets Collide (seriously how good is this label at the moment? Along with VAILS, there’s GURT, Mother Corona, PIST, Wort; seriously exciting stuff fromthe British label) have helped the band release a heavy, sharp, skull smashing EP in the form of the excellently named Galactic Triceratops, and it’s a hell of a beast to behold!

The Welsh duo (bassist/vocals Owen Street, drummer Matthew Ham) kick of the record with ‘Sally’s In Love’, showcasing a combination of doom vocals set over slow burning sludge lines that explode with the force of an army, and considering they’re a duo, that’s a hell of an impressive feet, you couldn’t even guess it was bass guitar led if I hadn’t just spoilt it for you before. Highlight of the record, and probably song title of the year, is ‘Megatron’s Telethon’ (told you) with it’s crushing riffs and suffocating vocals creating a euphoric moshing experience that just feels like adrenaline coarsing through your veins.

Much focus will be put on the fact that VAILS are a duo, which compared to other acts in the same field is an unusual thing, but what they lack in numbers, they make up for in every other aspect; the riffs are heavier, the songs are more brutal than most, and their waves of doom encompass your contorting soul. Galactic Triceratops is just what we needed to kick us right in the face, it’s a record that will make other bands raise their game, and the listeners smash something large.

Get the record for a pay-as-you-like from When PlanetsCollide now!
