Exclusive Premiere Song Stream: HORNSS-"Atrophic"

Today, we are honored to present an exclusive stream of the song "Atrophic" from the upcoming release from HORNSS. Prepare your ears for a short and powerful stab of fuzz-drenched doom with a raw punk attitude. This song absolutely slays, so crank it up and throw them "HORNSS" in the air!

San Francisco heavy rock trio HORNSS have recorded their highly-anticipated second album. Titled Telepath, the band take things to a more psychedelic place, while building on their heavy, fuzzed out punk and doom influenced desert rock sound.

HORNSS have gained a worldwide reputation among the stoner rock and doom scene, taking the stage with fellow heavy hitters such as Ufomammut, YOB, Windhand, Bang, Black Cobra, Fatso Jetson, Lord Dying, Naam and Elder. They also co-headlined a successful 2014 European tour with Vancouver’s Black Wizard.

Formed in 2010, the band includes Mike Moracha and Nick Nava, who originally got their start in the early Palm Desert music scene that spawned the desert rock movement, as part of the band Solarfeast (with Chris Cockrell, formerly of Kyuss) and Jack Saints, along with drummer Bil Bowman (formerly of Zodiac Killers, pioneering Bay Area black metal band blackQueen and Florida sludge heavyweights Scrog).

Telepath is the follow-up to the band’s acclaimed debut album, No Blood, No Sympathy, released in 2013 on Riding Easy Records. Recorded by Tim Green (Saviours, Melvins, KARP, Comets on Fire, Hot Lunch), the guys recorded this one directly to analog tape at Green’s Louder Studios in Grass Valley, CA. The new album will be released on limited vinyl by STB Records and compact disc and digital worldwide by Ripple Music.

Exclusive Track Premiere: Jeremy Irons & The Ratgang Malibus - "Wind Seized"

The earthen, the primitive, the native. There's no doubt a connection between this world and another, but our technology and our mundane motions won't help you find it. Without the benefit of time or a seasoned guide, you'll trip and miss the point. If you've absorbed Sweden's Jeremy Irons & The Ratgang Malibus, you've been, at the very least, introduced to a wormhole leading to a timeless, sprawling expanse of lofted bursts of psychedelia. The patient, the timeless, the hauntingly dry-hung threads of Elefanta and Bloom interwove the heavy with the dusty swirl, promising no limit.

From JIRM's latest trippy 8-track jaunt Spirit Knife comes Wind Seized, a belted free-spirit epic of canyon-dipped vocals glazing an elevated terrace of red rocks and staggering majesty. These guitars sail only to erupt and spray a dusty terrain with gold flakes, stunning with solos, riffing and rolling with sticky cosmic hope. It's impossible to hide the beauty amid the heavy hollows as your head tilts 90ยบ and elemental variance threads spirals due North. This opus accomplishes more than simple seizure.

Small Stone needs your hovered commitment for two weeks, releasing Spirit Knife on April 29th. Just trust us, the album's balance of licks and buzzing hums is gonna drip from the corner of your mouth. But this streamer's an extended hand, an open door to a dimension you won't discover on fucking Pandora. Check it out below and drift... By the time your grip firms and you're carried home, you'll realize how fucking incredible it felt to get away.

Pittsburgh's Progressive Sludge Demons Supervoid Set To Release Debut Album, Stream Exclusive Track

After generating a huge buzz upon the release of their devastating EP "Endless Planets" and scorching live shows with the likes of Borracho, Been Obscene, Windhand, Clamfight and many others, Supervoid is set to release its furious debut "Filaments" on October 26th.

In astronomy, a galaxy filament is the largest known cosmic structure. They are essentially strings of galaxies that form the borders of large voids of nothing in the universe. The concept behind the album is that each track is about an event that takes place on Earth, but is reflected through the cosmos. Each track has a coinciding constellation it is related to. These are listed in the digipak/lyric booklet that will come with the CD.

Here is the cover art. Each icon represents a track. The bear is for The Bear, the snake is for Ride the Snake, etc.

Album title: Filaments

Track listing:

1. Coat of Luminous
2. Braymerian: War Elephant
3. Ride the Snake
4. Wake of the Smoke Jumper
5. Ladders
6. Arcane Groves

8. The Bear

The album will be released Oct 26th, when the band opens at The Rex Theater in Pittsburgh, Pa for the almighty Orange Goblin, Holy Grail and Lazer/Wulf. Anyone who buys an advance ticket through the band will receive the digipak CD for free the night of the show.

Exclusive Stream/Review of Borracho-Oculus

It's no secret that we're big fans of Borracho's heavy riffs and stoner grooves here at Heavy Planet. Hell, we asked the guys to headline our CMJ Showcase in New York City last Fall and we're thrilled to be sponsoring their upcoming album release party at the Rock and Roll Hotel in Washington DC (that's next Friday, July 19th by the way). But perhaps most exciting of all, we're pleased as fucking punch to be offering you the very first taste of the band's new LP, Oculus…right here…right now. Yep, you read that right, the Borracho camp were kind enough to give Heavy Planet readers the exclusive opportunity to hear their new record in its entirety a full week in advance of its release. So settle in, hit play and come trip out with us as we get acquainted with what is sure to be the soundtrack to the rest of your summer. This is Oculus.

Now I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the underlying theme that seems to be infused into every aspect of this release, and that would be one of "addition through subtraction." Don't get me wrong, I mean no disrespect to original vocalist Noah Greenburg, who was excellent on the band's debut album Splitting Sky (and even better if you saw him live), but this marks the official debut of the band's leaner, meaner three-piece lineup that sees guitarist Steve Fisher stepping to the forefront, grabbing the reins so to speak, and taking Noah’s place behind the mic. So there's that.

But then there's also the more intrinsic fact that, despite its 38 minute run time, Oculus is comprised of only five tracks. Now as you and I both know this isn’t a style of music that places a value on quantity over quality and taken as a whole, these five songs combine to form an album that will transport you through a series of musical twists, turns, peaks and valleys all while paying tribute to the most important aspect of the genre…the almighty riff. For those familiar with Borracho this should come as no surprise, because at their heart, they’ve always been a band that demands the undivided attention of their listeners by way of extended jams that feature a multitude of time signatures and stylistic shifts. And from the very first note to the last fading remnant of reverb and through every nuance of the musical journey in between, such is the case with Oculus.

The album opens to the sound of a fluid bass line from Tim Martin that’s then joined by the heavy kick of Mario Trubiano’s bass drum and a delicate, yet psychedelic guitar lick from Fisher. And for what it’s worth, that’ll be the last time I use the word “delicate” in this review. A ghostly female voiceover hovers in the background adding depth to the buildup and then the hammer drops and the trio unleash the first of what will be many killer riffs to come. Collectively, Borracho grind out a solid, mid-tempo groove for the better part of this first track, entitled “Empty”, but then Fisher makes an abrupt turn into the fast lane and the song becomes an altogether different animal. It’s here that we get our first introduction to the guitarist’s vocal register, which you’ll immediately notice to be much cleaner, yet no less commanding than that of Greenburg. Also notable is the surprising range in Fisher’s delivery as he manages to slide up an octave, never quite reaching a scream, but carrying the song’s newfound pace through to its conclusion with an aggressive authority. “Pick up the pieces, try to move ahead…I won’t find my peace, ‘til he’s filled with lead”.

“Know the Score” throws a similar curveball at its start, with Fisher subtly (I told you I wouldn’t say delicate anymore) plucking at his Flying V before the rhythm section joins in and the three are off and running again. Less instrumental than its predecessor, this one will have you grooving to its serpentine rhythm and singing along as the vocalist advises “so light another cigarette…leave a message at the door.” The highlight is the surprising addition of an organ during the song’s bridge, which leads into a bouncing jam session chock full of fuzz and fury. At this point, Borracho are dialed in and assuming you have a pulse, you will be too. The song eventually comes full circle, back to the original rhythm that captivated you in the first place, and by the time it concludes you’ll be left with a sense of compulsive anticipation for what’s yet to come.

By design, the final three tracks flow together as one epic, stoner rock suite, beginning with “Stockpile”, which at nearly eleven minutes, is the album’s lengthiest song. This one rides out a patient pulse of propulsive rhythm laid down by Trubiano and Martin, who combine to unleash a combination of thunderous percussion, deafening crash and the lowest of low end harmonic foundations. But that’s not to say that Fisher’s guitar takes a backseat at any point on the album and in fact, he showcases his playing here with a considerably impromptu and altogether rad solo. Then in true Borracho style, the song shifts gears, becoming another upbeat romp through riff-infested waters before devolving into the haze and confusion of “Eye” (which oh by the way, happens to be the meaning of the word Oculus). Serving as a bridge between “Stockpile” and album closer “I’ve Come for It All,” this one melds static, feedback and ample psychedelic voice effects before the basis of the final song emerges from the chaos.

And oh what a finale it turns out to be. Deftly combining all of the elements that make Borracho what they are…that would be tradesmen in ultra-heavy riffs, rhythms and hooks, in case you haven’t been paying attention…the song opens with a steady build into another solid groove as Fisher croons…”darkness surrounds me, like a long lost friend…there’s no justice, only revenge.” Of course another shift in tempo is always right around the corner and that’s true here as well, when after a series of stop/starts, the band slows it way down…”you better run, you better hide…I’m coming for you.” And then the album concludes amidst the frenetic pandemonium of another monstrous solo from Fisher before the entire ensemble ultimately fades into nothing.

So there you have our take on the latest from Borracho. Now it’s your turn to take a glimpse inside of Oculus and you can’t do that anywhere else but right here at Heavy Planet. Go ahead…hit play and listen to the beginning of a new era for the band. Listen as they cement their status as a bona fide power-trio, all the while maintaining their commanding grasp on the power of the riff. Listen as they prove the timeless old clichรฉ that less can in fact be so much more.-Toby Cole

We hope you enjoy Oculus as much as we do. Be sure to pick up the album when it's released next Thursday and if you're on the East Coast, you don't want to miss Borracho's upcoming tour dates with the mighty Lo-Pan (click the band's Facebook link below for dates). Finally a big thanks to Mario, Steve and Tim of Borracho for giving Heavy Planet the opportunity to showcase their kick ass new tunes.

 Cheers fellas!

EXCLUSIVE STREAM: SWITCHBLADE JESUS

EXCLUSIVE STREAM: SWITCHBLADE JESUS

Since our first introduction to Switchblade Jesus back in 2011 as a "New Band To Burn One To" , this Corpus Christi-based band has found a place in our hearts here at Heavy Planet. This five-piece band has been tearing up the local scene since 2010 with their blistering live shows, been featured on a few killer compilations from Doommantia and The Soda Shop and came in a close second in our March Bandness competition with The Soda Shop back in 2011.

The band has gained some favorable reviews including one from our very own Nuclear Dog. Here is what others have had to say about Switchblade Jesus:

---"all I can say is, what Switchblade Jesus has to offer is some cutting-edge, blood-boiling, head-nodding, riff-rocking beast of a stoner rock strain, distilled from pure-bred trailblazing attitude and adrenaline junkie art. As glorifying as that might sound (or I tried to make it sound) I have no doubt in my mind that Switchblade Jesus will impress us with their full-length. Check these guys out. If you’re into rock at all, you won’t be disappointed, and if you’re into stoner rock, this is your thing, and if you like your stoner rock filth-encrusted and larger-than-life, it’s your drug. 10/10, keep it up."-Sarp Esin, Doommantia

---"The songs on the EP are heavy and hard rock with some metal moments. They’re fast paced and in your face, well in your face if it’s still there after the melting that Switchblade Jesus is capable of doing." Bill Goodman, The Soda Shop

We have been waiting patiently for the band's first full-length debut and are honored to present it to you in its entirety. The album will be available in much better sound quality on their Bandcamp page beginning on Friday June 28th.  Now without further adieu, get ready and crank this mutha up!

Heavy Planet thanks you Switchblade Jesus for letting us be a part of your impending success.

EXCLUSIVE Track Premieres: GODHUNTER & ANAKIM

Didn't we tell you Tucson was heating up? You all remember Godhunter. And Southwest Terror Fest introduced a slew of acts that needed your attention. Well, today Tucson's sludge lords are sharing Heavy Planet's top-billing on a double-barrel blast of southwest heaviness. Godhunter may be fucking hard-asses, but they're not gonna go full-prick and deny their faithful a taste of what lies ahead on the highly-anticipated City Of Dust. And if this is just a glimpse, we can't wait for the full seven-course slaughter.

Check out Vultures' Wake, a fuzzy slab of jagged sludge formed on the scabs of the incredible Wolves and bleeding into the pools of blood that promise to collect on City of Dust. Lick the corners of your mouth and crack open a night of regret. Gritty and riff-laden, you still can't ignore the nod-inducing groove!

Godhunter - Vultures' Wake

Oh! And Anakim provide Tucson with an extended trickle of promise. The haunting sway of The Whimper of Whipped Dogs won't leave your mind anytime soon, and the murky chop only further extends the southwest's hot grip on a scene once thought exclusive to bands from America's east coast. Let this rattle your brain and numb your skull! You're not hearing this ANYWHERE else!

“This Mos Generator package is one of those sets that speaks to the lifelong Mos fan, as well as those who are discovering the band for the first time,” states Tony Reed, singer and guitarist for the band. “It was a goal for myself and the label to create a package that was affordable, something that looked cool, and was packed with some special moments from the bands ten year history.”

Featuring over two and a half hours of music, the Mos Generator 10th Anniversary Edition was designed with the music fan in mind. Here’s what the press is saying:

“ . . . like the rampaging inhabitants of a sonic Jurassic Park; thunderously heavy, jaw droppingly magnificent and maybe just a little bit scary. This is music that went extinct many years ago, but against all expectation and logic, here it is alive and thriving in the modern age. 4/5” -- The BCFM Sunday Rockshow

"Of all the second-wave Sabbath types, these guys were and remain by far the most original, with tricky prog tempos, tunefully sludgy Tony Iommi-style lo-register riffage and a sense of humor to rival their sense of purpose. If metal is your thing and you slept on this stuff when it first came out – and a lot of people did, this was before myspace, let alone youtube – now’s a good time to rediscover them." -- Lucid Culture

“Really a fantastic package all around. Once again Ripple Music not only delivers the goods, but they go the extra and exceed all my expectations on this one." -- Heavy Metal Time Machine

HEAVY PLANET EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE OF NEW FEN VIDEO "MIRACLE"

In January of 1998, in the mountain shadows of Nelson, British Columbia, a creatorship was formed between two recluses. One had long hair, strange tattoos, and rode a motorbike and played guitar. The other was a tall, pale, librarian-type figure, with a voice that as easily terrified as soothed. For more than a decade the pair has been at work, assembling songs of a dark nature, giving refuge to the melancholy, the wanting, and at times, the disturbed. To date four albums have resulted: Surgical Transfusion of Molting Sensory Reflections (2000), Heron Leg (2003), Congenital Fixation (2006), and the Ripple Music released album, Trails out of Gloom (2010).

Their latest masterpiece "Trails out of Gloom", has been critically acclaimed by the media making many Top 20 lists including Heavy Planet's. The band has already released one single from that album called "Find That One". Now the band is releasing their second single off of the album called "Miracle". For a limited time you can watch the video exclusively on Heavy Planet. So without further ado, it is my honor in association with Ripple Music to present the exclusive world premiere video "Miracle" from that brilliant album.
