New Band To Burn One To: DOCTOR DOOM

HEAVY PLANET PRESENTS...

BAND BIO:

DoctoR DooM is a Rock band, based in Ariège (Midi-Pyrénées, France), formed in 2011.

From a Metal background, the guitarists came together through a shared interest in 60s and 70s music, in particular some of the legendary Rock bands. Soon they were joined by a rhythm section, and put together a set comprised of covers and originals, going between Blues and Hard Rock.

After a series of gigs in 2012, DoctoR DooM finished their 1st EP, « the DoomO », featuring the first 3 originals by the band, available in full for streaming and free download on the band’s Bandcamp page.

Greatly inspired by the recent wave of Scandinavian Stoner/Rock bands (Graveyard, Witchcraft, Spiders, Asteroid …) and the foundational bands of this genre (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Coven …), DoctoR DooM’s music is firmly rooted in Rock culture, combining a vintage sound and heavy riffs while using song structures more typical of Progessive Rock.

THOUGHTS:

"Here at Heavy Planet we take a lot of pride in introducing new bands to the throngs of people that make up the Stoner/Doom community. A community that goes without saying simply knows what the rest of the world is missing out on. The band that we introduce to you today is one that we think you will enjoy immensely. The band I am referring to is doomy blues rockers DoctoR DooM. With a devilish affection, the band conjures up a foggy brew of wicked blues and righteous stoner rock on their latest 3-song EP "DoomO".  First track "The Sun" starts out with a sizable fuzzy doom riff which then transcends into a vintage upbeat hard rocking blues rhythm. The roots-rock continues with the frolicking organ-infused epic "Relax You're Dead". This track is absolutely killer! The EP unfortunately comes to an end with "Stuck in the Past" a song with a driving beat and terrific soloing. DoctoR Doom cleverly unite a wide range of influences, creating a sound that sounds both vibrant and refreshing."

New Band To Burn One To: STANGALA

HEAVY PLANET presents...STANGALA!

BAND BIO:

"At first, there was this old Breton wizard, tarnished by the years, wandering the woods of Kemper, in quest of precious herbs to prepare his wicked beverages. He was very much frowned upon with his bizarre stories of goblins, witches and other deranged spirits of the forest. Nevertheless, he managed to get in touch with two fellows whose spirits were just as much burnt by entheogen drugs as his.

Stangala plays rock. Finding inspiration in the roots of occult and psychedelic music, from Black Sabbath to Celtic Frost and from Hawkwind to Queens of the Stone Age, the french trio enhance their vintage liquors with a twist of celtic folklore. After two short-length collections of recipes (« ...Dans les bois » in 2007 and « LSD » in 2008), Stangala released their first occult book « Boued Tousek Hag Traou Mat All » , through Solitude Productions at the end of 2011. The band also produced two videos for the tracks « Doom Rock Glazik » and « Bigoudened an Diaoul », reminiscent of vintage B-movies. Stangala gave quite a few live rituals in company of notorious acts such as Ramesses, The Bottle Doom Lazy Band, Coffin on Tyres and Huata.

Today, the druids teamed up with the mighty StoneBirds from Rostrenen (France) for a split recipe with a high concentration of hydromel and local mind-opening mushrooms, resulting in a bizarre cosmo-fuzzy trip in the countryside. Spread the word."

THOUGHTS:

"Bagpipes and Stoner Rock. You bet your ass! As I fill in for Zac as he makes his way to the Midwest, I thought that I would grace your ears with some pretty interesting Stoner/Occult/Doom rock courtesy of French band Stangala. While not exactly a "new" band, the band may be new to some if not many. Frankly, until receiving the e-mail from the band, I had never heard of them myself. So, with that being said, you should engage in a listen to this wonderfully unique band.

When you think of bagpipes, and without being too stereotypical you think of a Scottish dude in a kilt. I must say that the first time I listened to the track "Doom Rock Glazik", I shuttered in amazement. The music contained within this album is entertainingly diverse. If I could sum it up in one sentence I would, but that just wouldn't serve this band it's due diligence.

If you are a fan of Occult Rock you will love this album as it has that mysterious and eerie vibe throughout. From the macabre and sinister vocal approach, the band uses it's love for seventies riffing to envelope the listener. Evil sounds fill the air as chants and burning sacrifices beckon the heavy guitar as it embraces the screams crying out in pain.

If you are a fan of Stoner/Doom you will love this album for it's groove and layered fuzz. The music rises in it's intensity as the drums blast out and the flames get higher and higher. There are so many different dynamics to this album that it is hard to pinpoint them all. The band even segues effortlessly from surf guitar riffing right into a bagpipe solo. Fucking insane! This is just one of those albums that you have to listen to and hear for yourself to discover all of the nuances. Amazing!"

New Band To Burn One To-Les Guenilles

The "New Band To Burn One To" today is Les Guenilles.

Bio:

"The band was formed in 2008 by David and Francois. They splitted both of they're own bands to form Les Guenilles which means The Rags in french. Their sound is described like a mix of stoner, punk and thrash. They've been compared to The Melvins, Trigger Effects, etc. They released their first EP (5 songs) in 2009. Their first album, Aucun Album, was released in 2010 which contains 11 songs. Produced by Pierre Girard (Malajube, Beast, Karkwa), Aucun Album appeared on the top 40 list of the best canadian albums of 2010 by Bande a Part, Radio-Canada (CBC). Les Guenilles shared the stage with bands like Burning Brides, The Pack AD, Priestess, Bison BC, The Sainte-Catherines and lots more. Lots of people claim that they're the loudest french band in the whole province of Quebec."

The band:

Simon Gauthier: bass

David Guilbault: guitar, vocals
Jonathan Bigras: drums
Francois Gagnon: guitar, vocals

When I think of Canada, I immediately think of two things, Rush and hockey. As I was listening to Les Guenilles the first thing I though was this does not sound anything like Rush and second, this would be the perfect soundtrack to a hockey game. Stoner/Thrash with a punk mentallity. Fast, furious, and blood-soaked. So go grab yourself a Molsen, turn on a hockey game and let the fun begin. Go to the band's Bandcamp site to stream the album for free, if you like it buy it! Word of caution. Everything is in French, but rock 'n roll is the universal language, right. You guys are gonna love this shit!

CD Review:As We Draw-Lines Breaking Circles

As We Draw – Lines Breaking Circles

CD Review courtesy of Zac Boda

I am very lucky to have the chance to review As We Draw’s “Lines Breaking Circles”. First, I want to express that this review will be very different from my past reviews. This style of music and album cannot be broken down into songs. This is not for the slight of heart. This album is a challenge, experience, and a journey through a violent storm. I was introduced to this trio from Laval, France with this subject line, “Review of probably the best post metal release of the year?” Needless to say, my hopes were set high simply from receiving this email. As We Draw brings memories of my early experiences with Pelican, Isis, and Neurosis. If you truly dedicate sometime and attention to listen (I mean really listen) you will walk away fulfilled. I cannot describe a high or low point of the album; it simply flows and crashes against gargantuan waves of a stormy sea. I love the album artwork; it truly fits the adventure you are preparing to set upon. I feel I am looking out the port side window of our ship, and all I see are the waves crashing against us. Enough of my ranting, if you are a fan of post, avant garde, music you absolutely have to give these guys a listen (hell they are giving the album away free). I hope you enjoy as I have. Well done AWD, well done.

If I have to “grade” this album: 4.5 out of 5

Bio:

As if you haven't had enough of these Isis, Cult Of Luna cocksuckers, with their so-called cheesy parts and badass cathartic sonic explosions... Of course, one can wonder about the relevence of playing some post-metal in 2010. But when it's done with such talent, such faith as these three young guys from Laval, either you take your hat off to them, or either your heart is made of dog food. «Lines Breaking Circles», is made for those who are still crying over Breach's split and years when Cult Of Luna still made you have a boner. This is quite a severe reproof to all those who spend more time twitting their promo photos than polishing their art in the studio. These guys are true workaholics and such gifted aesthetes that they're starting to get sickening. Especially knowing that they can kick your ass on stage as well as on your turntable. But you can't really hate them, can you? Not when you listen to these killer choruses sponsored by Kleenex on «Scum Of The Earth» or those huge slaps on «Draft» or again... Alright, enough of this, you already got that it is the same deal as their buddies from Birds In Row : LAVAL EQUALS LIFE.
