Song of the Day-RUKH-"Gloomy Charm"
"Gloomy Charm" is taken off of the recently released full-length "Tickets For a Second Round"by Russian band RUKH. This song has a dark and superbly mysterious aura surrounding it. It feels more gloomy, hence the title, and less doomy. I'm feeling a bit of a Beth Gibbons from Portishead vibe in the vocals. Rapturous, sultry and haunting with a hint of psychedelia lurking in the background. For more information, please check out the following links: Facebook | Bandcamp

Sunday Sludge: Otzepenevshiye/Vir' - "For A Knife"
Countless conversations end with the promise of getting together, collaborating, creating. Too often these promises never reach delivery and the conversation drifts to the back of the mind alongside trivia and repressed memories. So many bands play on so many bills, it's easy to see how these discussions unfold and ultimately lose their steam. When two bands finally make the time to tolerate one another, the results can be one-sided, watered-down, or entirely disappointing.
Moving beyond the tradition of splits and guest appearances, Saint Petersburg's Otzepenevshiye and Vir' shared the stage in Kazan' and drafted a plan to together craft an entire album. The end result is one that smashes pigeonholes and shreds labels, a clinic of sound manipulation and redistribution. At times a shoegazing drone-metal stack of layered guitars, others a crushing amalgam of sludge despair, the seven-track For a Knife rolls downhill and flattens expectations in a slow-motion daydream.
Opening on 1000 Doors, a cold pocket of immobilized breaths grows into a churning drone. But when the sounds emerge from every corner, filtering through a corridor of tin and wood, the guitar splinters advise against prematurely formulating opinions. Sergey Milushkin (Vir') claws at your feet as you pass, countering the awesomely ambient structures. Unfolding into a static whir of broken mist, the track breaks and blends crust with unsteady, glazed warbles. If the bands' intentions were to pull apart your senses, they've already succeeded admirably.
The storm of choppy sludge rhythms on The Black is the disc's mock of your discomfort. Guitar sustain remains, wraps you in moss, and searches the premises with one eye closed. The dicey balances the droney when banshees circle and cackle. The re-emergence of the tortured/torturous vocal after a three-track hiatus is welcome and jarring. The track invites you to join, basking in the discontent of a death rattle until the abrupt closing.
Long, sustained instrumental passages alone won't pique the interest of seasoned drone- or post-metal connoisseurs, and failure to let a tone fully respire will prove costly. Four of For A Knife's tracks present no vocals whatsoever, relying heavily on steady pacing and slow decay. Kotlovan's industrial churn offers a veil of productivity, masking the insidious drone elements. Sonne de Toten stutters and stumbles on technological breakdowns, panning samples with awesome atmospheres. Slicing guitar tapestries evolve via expanding fuzz, growing thicker as your shirt snags on hidden thorns. And when the field of rotting futures demands a glimpse of strange beauty shuffling through this ugliness, we transition into -273°C. The bird's eye perspective provides both relent and clarity, but the haunting soundscape is as post-impressionist as it is post-metal. The whole of the triptych is just one of the album's aching highlights.
Pull the pin on Ce Qui ne Trompe pas and what unfolds is an avalanche of screams and raining ashes. The dual-note piano drone is endless and somber, and it's the perfect lead-in to the closing title track. For A Knife is more primitive than what's led to it, but there are glimmers of life and rebirth contained herein. Sludge and drone again poke through the cleansing as if to say "don't forget us," but the trickle juxtaposes tracks one through six. Rhythmic plod burns, guitar embers crackle, and the ultimate pain of Milushkin's bark, absent far too long, are all washed away in the final gasp of one incredible album.
That two bands can accommodate one another, let alone so well complement one another, is an exercise in mastery. Forget that divergent methods and habits actually sound this amazing together and view the album on its own merits. This was simply a group of musicians sharing and focusing and brilliantly realizing ideas in the form of seven long, beautiful cruisers. Greater than the sum of its parts? Who cares. Call it what you want, but this sound is undeniably captivating.

Zac's "Double Dose": Golden Void / Vice Versa
Shame on me. Here I am again with another fine piece of art that I missed in 2012. Luckily Reg had it covered with his Top 20 list from last year. Golden Void are a soulful space rock group out of the Bay Area, California. Carrying much history between band-mates Golden Void present a well polished sound thanks to the inherent chemistry they share. While listening to their self-titled debut the surrounding vibes become airy, quite a light and pleasant feeling. This in part is due to the cosmic "guitaring" in partnership with aura building keys. The quartet will dive into the depths for bursts of blues driven intervals, held together by the solid (and heavy) bass and drum foundation. Someone studied at Sabbath University. Truly these instruments can go unnoticed, but here a close ear will appreciate the musicianship. Check out Golden Void's music video for Virtue below and order a copy from Thrill Jockey Records while hard-copies (CDs) are still available!

Blazing out of the cold Russian sky's are Vice Versa and their lo-fi recorded demo that contains enough noise and feedback to induce the most mathematically inclined metal head into a serve aneurysm. Once a listener takes the time to decipher through the feedback they will find a root of classic blues. Stepping through the demo we find a melancholy lingering through the second track Stranger. This tracks lengthy run time and steady pace will give droners something to get lost in. My personal favorite track is I'm Going Away. This rhythm driven tune is played in that classic blues style and just as the title states, ...Away, the listeners will find the music and vocals seem to be emitting from some two miles away, quite buried in the mix but giving the track an authentic feel. Give the gentlemen from Moscow a few moments of your time and stream the demo at bandcamp. And hey, if you like it Vice Versa is giving it away. That's right... FREE!

Sunday Sludge: Pressor - "Grave Full Of Weed"
You could randomly select any particular Sunday Sludge feature and bet on black that Weedeater, Bongzilla, or another weed metal act is gonna make an appearance. That stoner-sludge groove is simply too sticky and too sweet to leave alone, and I roll back to it more often than I should. You might call Weedeater the barometer, unfair as it may be, simply because I'll grab a joint with one hand, my dick with the other, and curl into fetal bliss as I scan the countryside for the best shit around.
I'm not gonna drift toward pretentiousness here. Look at Pressor's fucking album cover. Grave Full Of Weed, they called it! Do I need to add a photo of Dixie Dave Collins here and imagine he's immortalized in the disc's artwork? When the rhythms descend, the clouded guitar smoke lifts these five tracks toward stoner-sludge bliss. Cough all you can, but this shit's gonna lace your eardrums as quickly as it pollutes your lungs. It's demonic, it grinds with the buzz of a thousand muttering hillbillies, and it comes to our doorsteps straight from Russia.
On the album's introductory track, They All Deserve To Die, the screeching halt of guitar warble is met with hazy distortion, while a distant riff mangle provides just enough evil to weed out the casual user. The progressive sonic assault is swingin' like dumbbell dicks, and Pressor don't want you hanging around if you're not fully committed. It's instrumental, but you're immediately clued in. God's Forgiveness follows with a fuzzed-out doom sway that plants our feet, sinks our asses, and has no struggle in introducing Alco Tony's growl, a brown cloak of discontent perfectly suited to the smoke amassed in your coworker's car.
The groove is undeniable, but its delivery is where Pressor stand out. The title track's buzzing sludge is organ-grinded comfort, suiting anyone who ever slept on a bed of solid rock. The callous, hollow sound shakes and shifts between burnt rhythms, but it's never burnt out. You'll tune out, but you won't turn off. Your beard grew two inches while you played these songs and you had no fucking idea, did you? Just let go. Pressor steered your day and altered your state. It's okay. No, really... it's okay.
Grave Full Of Weed is loaded with bluesy grooves, but your sludge sensibility is never gonna let 'em peek through. The sped-up onset of Broken Wings is incredibly unsettling and incredibly thick, and that haze is unshakable. But you KNEW this shit was gonna slow down! You KNEW you were gonna look at the clock, tell yourself if was way later than it displayed, and you were gonna jump up from the couch and grab a handful of stuffing mix. The echoed chants notwithstanding, this was the best thing that happened to you and your buddies this week.
The incessant crunch is enough to draw you in, but the stoner sessions are gonna wrap your head and trip your wick. The buzz is never slick, never evasive... it grabs every consciousness and wrings it warped, leaving little more than spent ends and seedy trays to have pockets turned inside out. But all you had to do was sit back, man! The riffs and licks marry atop a crust-rhythm amalgam of mud and fire. Your parents are gonna wonder what happened to their little boy. You're gonna wonder what the fuck their problem is.

Nuclear Dog's Atomic Split: Wheelfall - "Interzone" / Stoner Train - "Hobo From Outerspace"
Today's Atomic Split features two bands unique and disparate in style, but with a common trait of deep, gravelly voiced vocalists. One band is from France and plays excellent stoner/doom music. One band is from Russia with a sound straight out of Alabama or Mississippi. Two different approaches, doubling up on the pleasure of the best rock n' roll in the world.
WHEELFALL - "INTERZONE"
Wheelfall are a very enthusiastic band, excited about playing their version of rock, equally excited about it being an all out assault of stoner/doom tunes, down tuned to the max, underpinned by heavy piledriving bass, and all bracketed up by the snap and thunder of the drums.
Band members include:
Wayne Furter - guitars, vocals
Niko El Moche - bass
Cactus Flo - Guitars
Niko Elbow - Drums
The riffs are determined and fuzzy, rendered with passion by Wayne and Cactus Flo, with Wayne topping the layers off with his deep, gravelly vocals that fit expertly into the groove of these doom tunes. Everything is big and bold, a relentless assault of steady jabs and left hooks, punctuated by an occasional uppercut, each landing a jarring blow that renders you senseless and wobbly from the weight and force, but smiling from the pleasure of the brutal encounter.
Wheelfall take inspiration for their lyrics from science fiction and fantasy, from books and movies alike, naming John Carpenter, HG Wells, and David Cronenberg as some of their favorite influences. Every song is deliberate and devastating, including the opening track "Howling" where they waste no time with a beautifully rendered stoner opening that quickly gives way to the crunch and crack of Wayne's rough hewn vocals. The opener is perhaps the highest tempo song on the album, but it leads eventually into a low down delivery of mud slugging fuzz. "Parasite Ravages" is huge and powerful, evoking the slow but inevitable catapult advance of heavy booted warriors of old. The best is saved for last, with the title track "Interzone" delivering the largest and grandest song in the stack, going over 22 minutes of grind and grit, with cast iron filings flying all over the place from the non-stop riffs grinding it out with the roll and boom of big, powerful bass, along with the pounding fury of the relentless drumwork.
This foursome from Nancy, France bring the metal, all fuzzed out and distorted to the max, with helpings of thunder and doom on the side.

STONER TRAIN - "HOBO FROM THE OUTER SPACE"
Our next full throttle, full throated album comes from a prolific Russian band, Stoner Train. Hailing from Moscow, they have released 3 separate albums in the course of 2 short years, all of which are more than worthy of the time spent getting to know these fun and singular songs. The newest album is "Hobo From the Outer Space", released in June, which more than makes up for a lack of proper English grammar with a huge dose of international rock n fucking roll that has the unmistakable sound of Southern U.S. rock of the seventies, displaying huge, bluesy guitars, along with heavy doses of banjo and harmonica.
Stoner Train consists of:
Serj Gdanian (Burning Beard) - guitars, vocals
Johnny Palchikov (Johnny Basstard) - harmonica/banjo
Vladimir Terterin (Cowboy 'Old Face') - drums
The harmonica is used prolifically throughout "Hobo" as well as on their previous two offerings, "Sluts for the Rebels" and "Rusty Gears", where it is wielded with force and power on many tracks, and while not normally an instrument of choice for music that prides itself on being as heavy and as forged in the high temperature foundries of hard, hot steel, the enthusiastic and crazy members of Stoner Train make the harmonica work, and make it work beautifully. The harmonica slides right in next to the down tuned riffs of Burning Beard's guitar as well as complements the lightning hot blues guitar from Serj.
The opening track, "Cannibal Hobo", is a perfect introduction to this singular collection of music out of the distant, cold capital of Russia. The guitar begins slicing away immediately upon takeoff, and charges straight through to the introduction of the wonderfully guttural, gravelly vocals of Mr. Gdanian. "Land of the Unheard Song" incorporates generous portions of the harmonica, not to mention a deft and incredible vocal rendition from Burning Beard that is worth the price of admission on its own. Both those elements are complementary to the deep and acoustic strumming of the guitar on this track, a feat of unusual accomplishment. Perhaps the best blending of high energy, adept guitar with Stoner Train's unique wielding of harmonica comes on "Dancing on the Grave"
The songs on "Hobo From the Outer Space" are all well written, with beautiful melodies that lend themselves perfectly to the high energy signature of the Stoner Train musicians. With songs that have such titles as "Dogs From The Outer Space", "Coelophysis Stuthiomimus", "Tractor Driver Fred", and "Frozen Booty Jam", there is a dominant theme of huge fun and high energy on their newest release that matches or surpasses their earlier albums, something that is sometimes hard for bands to sustain over the course of several recordings. Stoner Train, though, not only sustain their high energy and superb creativity, they demonstrate on "Hobo" significant growth in their ability to develop their craft, no longer relying upon cover songs of their favorite musical influences, instead developing high quality melodies that incorporate the discipline of good song writing on the collection of tunes on this album.
Music this fun and unique is nothing but pure enjoyment when it comes along once in a blue southern Russian moon.

"As you listen to Russian sludge/post-metal band Cosmonaut's Day, a sense of atmoshperic ambience travels around you while walls of heavy riffing bash into your skull. The music feels more tragic and freespirited and less progressive and dark than other bands within the genre. Utilizing steady transcending rhythms, precise guitar plucking and throbbing bass tones, the shall I say lack of vocals is not even missed. The music speaks loud and clear and transports you to a galaxy above and beyond."

New Band To Burn One To-Sex Type Thing
The "New Band To Burn One To" today is Sex Type Thing.
Bio:
"SEX TYPE THING hail from Saint-Petersburg. The name of the band was adopted in early 2009 after years of development, lineup and style changes. As a matter of fact, vocalist Michael Chigidin and guitarist Pavel Voinov, the core-members of STT, have been playing together since 1998: the first ten years were spent performing under the names AIRBAG, TY COBB, and EBOLA as well as building musical foundation they felt they required. Their first album, Southern Dreams From Northern Reality, came out in spring 2009, and was met with warm local and national critical response. However, the unexpected departure of their drummer and bass player negatively impacted the band's perspective. In the beginning of 2011, the band raised again with a new rhythm section on board."
Combine the best stoner rock elements with 90's grunge influences and some riff heavy blues, add to that great melodies and clean vocals and you get exactly what Sex Type Thing has set out to accomplish. A great rock record! Their new album "Checked Up By Time" is set for release sometime this month. In the meantime you can check out their previous release as well as snippets from the new album on their Bandcamp page.
