New Band To Burn One To: VIRUSES

HEAVY PLANET PRESENTS...VIRUSES!

BAND BIO:

Viruses is M. Vitali (guitars, electronics), Jeffrey Smith (bass, electronics), and Rocco DiDonna (vocals, electronics). Popdust was recorded in Chicago and New York and was released through Magnetic Eye Records (MER018).

THOUGHTS:

"Who says you need riffs and distortion to burn one, eh? I couldn't possibly be succinct in pushing the debut release from VIRUSES, an ambient-electronic three-piece stringing together nine spacey barbs on Popdust. Ethereal, entrancing, and at times deceptively dark, this is one strange, gorgeous detour splintered by arresting digital distractions.

Opening on the tense and lush Glow (Forever Fangs), we're introduced to alternating layers celebrating the organic and the synthetic while child-like distraction grows with every delightfully sporadic blip on the equally taut Earth Family Immortal. The vocal haunt evident on Lago d'Orta (Those Who Feel) channels Isaac Brock, churning and spitting with gorgeous devastation over an atmospheric drone.

Industrialized stomp and primal caution somehow marry here. There are those detectable improvisations, fueled less by mind and more by heart. But just how free is this band? Subjecting themselves to no fine-tuning and relying solely on impulse seems to work pretty well, even when smoothed-out loungescapes (Landmines) evolve into peppered blasts of pixelated shrapnel (Revanans). At the end of the day, we're walking past her house. Reflecting, regretting, and yearning.

The juxtapositions should be impossibly difficult to execute, but somehow they're not. The über-modern and the traditional, the patient and the impulsive, the dark and the hope-laden. Maybe they're not tip-toeing with streetside icy sadness; maybe they're cautiously crossing a frozen pond. Their destinations and motivations matter to them, sure. What matters to us is how captivating such questions can be."

New Band To Burn One To: Molior Superum

HEAVY PLANET presents...MOLIOR SUPERUM!

BAND BIO:

"High-energy tunes inspired by the 70’s heavy, dirty blues rock and mixed with stoner rock’s groove!"

THOUGHTS:

I have no clue how this piece of stoner blues escaped my ears last year... it even landed at #17 on Reg's Top 20 of 2012! So, I believe it is time to give these fellows a proper introduction. Today's New Band To Burn One To is Molior Superum, a blues-filled battalion of Swedes galloping with a triumphant thunder of grooves and an honest "seventies rock vibe". If you're looking for a band to complement your Stubb and Skraeckoedlan playlist, look no further than Molior Superum and their November 2012 release Into The Sun. Spin my personal favorite track Towards The Haze above and get a digital or vinyl copy of Into The Sun at bandcamp

 MEMBERS:
Oskar Öberg - Guitar

New Band To Burn One To: Serenity Broken

HEAVY PLANET presents...Serenity Broken!!

BAND BIO:

"Serenity Broken is another Athenian hard rock band that plays awesome music and has the coolest style and this…and…then…that…WAIT!
Boring bio stuff…who really cares anyway??

A British-raised psychopath singer, a fashion addicted drummer, 2 tube gain freaks and a motocross animal joined forces and Serenity Broken was brewed.  Gigs followed in various clubs in Athens, headlining shows in the local underground scene, intense moments supporting Greek legends Rotting Christ, forged the band’s attitude and experience.
Suddenly out of nowhere the band completes its first self-financed full length album entitled "Commercial Suicide" that released at July 13th 2012!
From hard rock to alternative and backwards to metal, all malted with a grunge aesthetic, the band sets their foundations to the music industry.

By the way, the band formed in Athens/Greece in mid 2010 as a 3 piece act and later on they became 5, simple as that.."

MEMBERS:

Andy - Guitars
Aris - Vocals
Lucas - Bass
Marios - Guitars
Victor - Drums

THOUGHTS:

"Serenity Broken is a Greek quintet who have molded a niche market for themselves inside this Heavy Planet.  The group have found a respectable path of bouncing between mainstream, radio-friendly post grunge and honest heavy metal.  Having joined forces only two years ago the five have created an elegant chemistry that allows guitars to evolve from gritty chuggin' to catchy-pop licks and onto flashy solos expected in classic hard rock.  The vocals are cleanly sung throughout the album and have moments of metalcore-esque screams while the bass and drums hold down the foundation with tight grooves.  Be sure to check out Serenity Broken's latest release Commercial Suicide now streaming in its entirety at bandcamp"

New Band To Burn One To: HOGG

BAND BIO:

Other than their lineup, Hogg must allow the tunes to speak for themselves. No fucking bio anywhere, which only adds to their allure. This four-piece from Salonika, Greece clearly loves their beer. It's safe to say, judging by their track titles, they also hit the green. Lucky for us, they also love crunchy stoner jams.

THOUGHTS:

It's not gonna take you long to fall in love with HOGG. Loaded with thick, flowing jams nodding due East to acts like Orange Goblin, Fu Manchu, and Kyuss, you're sure to twist your chin-pubes and bob your buzzing skull to these ten tracks. I stumbled upon these guys and immediately choked on fuzz, nonchalance, and groove woven within the album's endless forest of rhythm and flattened enchantment. Loaded Dice is straight-up Fu Manchu style, while the thick Orange Goblin-esque Forest of Despair oozes Coup de Grace rhythms and channels an inner cloud-jumper. Sounding campy when they want and pensive when they need, Hogg churn and roll like yesterday's bad decision. Put these Greeks on your radar. There's an expectation stoner-rock carries, and Hogg crumple the expectation and beat-off with it. We love a band that isn't in any hurry. And these dudes, as evidenced on jams like Catapult, are clearly in no rush to slow the fuck down and take it all in. Thank fucking Hogg for bands like this. That "Name Your Price" invitation means you should stop being a cheap cunt and buck up on the props. I want Hogg playing in my backyard.

Lineup:

Cobas G: Vox & Donkey Farts
Snail B: Guitars & Incoherent Behavior
Panos: Bass & Fluid Excretions
Dead M: Drums & Mule Kicks

New Band To Burn One To: FiNSKA

Heavy Planet presents...FiNSKA

Today's "New Band To Burn One To" is from Bjelovar, Croatia.

Band Bio:

"FiNSKA is an instrumental trio from Bjelovar, Croatia. The creative process started in June 2011. when the band began with instrumental sessions to see what kind of music would satisfy all band members. The basic philosophy behind FiNSKA's music is that songs should be relatively short, unusually structured and with enough groove."

Thoughts:

In a matter of fifteen minutes Croatia's FiNSKA manage to travel through multiple states of being, leaving the listener with one option.. to spin the tracks again and decode what has just been experienced. The artists music is unstructured, proving their creative cortex. If you are looking for moments of haunting terror, industrial chaos, and anything to let your imagination run wild check out their EP Perverted Lollipops at bandcamp.

New Band To Burn One To: The Lone Crows

Heavy Planet presents . . . today’s “New Band To Burn One To”, The Lone Crows, from Minneapolis, MN.

Bio:

"Formerly known as Heart of Bristol, with the release of our new Self-produced Demo CD we have changed the name to "The Lone Crows." We are a Blues Rock Band based in Minneapolis, MN. Our music draws upon many influences, chiefly Blues, Jazz, R&B, Classic Rock, as well as Grunge and Alternative Rock, all coming together for High energy stage performances and tasty riffs."

Thoughts:

A big thanks to Andre up in Minnesota for bringing these blues crows to my attention.  That's right The Lone Crows are a blues band through and through, with tasteful additions of rock, jazz, and some stoner riffage, our favorite medicine.  The Lone Crows have a sick obsession 'soul', a 'soul' only the truest blues rock can deliver.  The band mixes a fair share of toe tapping and catchy with enigmatic and somber blues rock and memorable lyrics like that of the track Moonshine, "....Cause you got sunshine in your heart and moonshine in mine...".  The recording is available for streaming over at bandcamp, be sure to give them a listen.   If you dig contact the band for a physical copy.

New Band to Burn One To: Satellite Beaver

Heavy Planet presents . . . today’s “New Band To Burn One To”, Satellite Beaver, hailing from Warsaw, Poland.

Band Bio:

Satellite Beaver are a hard rocking Sludge/Stoner Metal Band from Poland.

The members are:

Simon the beaver – vocals, guitars
Tom the beaver – guitars
Mad the beaver - drums
[place your name here] – bass guitar (searching for new one at the moment)

Satellite Beaver play a hard hitting blend of Stoner, Sludge, Doom and Hard Rock to brilliant head-banging effect.

From the band (paraphrased):

"Have you ever tried to imagine yourself as a hairy space dozer furious enough to destroy planets? Not very likely, but now the time has come to confront one face to face.

Formed in Warsaw in 2008, Satellite Beaver search for their own style and they are more stubborn than Sisyphus himself. Inspired and influenced by traditional grunge and stoner rock genres, the band has come a long way to the point where now they are searching for the thickest guitar strings and biggest crash cymbals ever created. What’s more, they have dared to spread their “tune it lower” philosophy during live performances with local and foreign stoner bands such as Belzebong, Luna Negra / Tres Perros, Karma To Burn, and Mars Red Sky.

Satellite Beaver are preparing brand new material for their debut album release, but before that happens, some chapters have to be closed. That’s why “The Last Bow” EP has been released. It contains 4 tracks composed in 2010-2011, which provide a point of view at the direction the band now moves toward: from the catchy, rock’n’rollin’ ‘Way before’, through the classic stoner track ‘Pershing’ and the slower ‘Urania’ to the gloomy and massive ‘Roadtrip’ track, which is closest to the style the band’s digging at the moment."

Thoughts:

Satellite Beaver have distinguished themselves in more ways than one, not just with this EP, but by their presence as an up and coming rock n’ roll force, displaying an incredible imagination and a big blazing bazooka of a rock n’ roll heart. They seem to have found the sound they love, have embraced it whole-heartedly, and apparently have decided to launch a full bore, all out assault on the world at large, turning the tide of heavy music toward the purest of rock genres, using the weapons they know can turn the tide: the biggest, loudest, testosterone fueled, nitro burning guitars and drums the likes of which you’re not likely to hear anywhere else. Take a listen to the new EP “The Last Bow” and be prepared to be literally blown away by a quick, but complete onslaught of 4 of the finest stoner, doom, sludge rock songs compiled together in a single place. The band is proudest of the final track, “Roadtrip”, saying it represents the direction they’re headed, but all tracks are ass-kicking landmines of explosive stoner treasures.

New Band To Burn One To: Parasol Caravan

Heavy Planet presents...Parasol Caravan Today's "New Band To Burn One To" is from Linz, Austria.

Band Bio:

"Parasol Caravan crank their amps up to 11 and play heavy rock with stoner and psychedelic elements. They are a dirty soundbastard between Black Stone Cherry and Kyuss with never ending groove, fat guitar riffs that have no mercy with your neck and incredible whiskey soaked vocals that get under your skin. Since the end of 2009 the four piece is rocking as many stages as possible and honoring their idols of the past without losing touch with the modern rock scene."

Thoughts:

Parasol Caravan make an honest form of stoner rock. Their potent selection from recent split EP Use The Fuzz (shared with fellow-fuzzer's Cachimbo de Paz) offers an enhanced and memorable version of riff rock. I mean these Austrian's riffs are relentless. Each track welcomes head-banging grooves. The introductory track The Barbers Snake wastes no time bringing this our attention, with an onslaught of drums and rhythm... but the majesty of riffage is found on the final track Chinese Eyes and in my opinion is legendary. Be sure to check it out and, in the words of Parasol Caravan "may the fuzz be with you!".

New Band To Burn One To - THE HOLLOW MEN

Bio:

"The Hollow Men were founded in 2001 by four music lovin' friends from the Dutch towns of Goes and Zierikzee and raised on a steady diet of Heavy Metal, Punk, and Classic Rock. They played their first shows as "The Speed Kings" but since there are a bunch of other bands and artists with similar names they rapidly changed it into "The Hollow Men" [after their first self-written tune]. Two demos were released, despite the fact that they're both clearly recorded with no budget to speak of. The reactions in the music press are mostly positive. Comparisons have been made with Hüsker Dü, Screaming Trees, Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters, and Entombed. A very big and well-known Dutch Rock & Metal-magazine even calls 'em 'potentially' the new Aerosmith(!!?). Many shows are played, including supports for some of their heroes like Peter Pan Speedrock, Dead Moon, a mini club tour with NWOBHM legends Diamond Head, and even a gig at Antwerp State Prison."

Review:

Hailing from The Netherlands, "The Hollow Men" have created "Food Chain". This album is full of sick hooks and harmonizing vocals, reminiscent of Alice in Chains. The production is raw, but never takes away from the excellent song writing and instrumental and vocal performance. Must listen songs from "Food Chain" include, but not limited to, "Euphoria", "Out in the Cold", and "Bleeding". -Zac

Remko - Guitars, Vocals
Robbert - Bass
Martin - Drums, Vocals
