Toby's Top Ten of 2015

Having been little more than a part time contributor to the mighty Heavy Planet for quite some time now, I find it a lot of fun to check back in with you good people now and again, particularly when it comes to sharing my favorite records from each passing year.  To be sure, 2015 was one of the best years for heavy music in recent memory and trying to pick and choose ten albums out of everything I dug this year was a near impossible task.  With that said, I did my best to keep up with those records that seemed to stick with me the most.  It's worth stating however that music, as with all art, is highly subjective, and because of that, you'll likely find my "best of" list differs from many of my peers…and that is of course, just fine.  In fact, it's a very good thing because it means we're all collectively shedding light on even more great music for you all to pollute your ears with if you haven't done so already.  So with all of that said, I hope you enjoy my favorite albums of 2015, maybe find something new that you hadn't heard before, and I look forward to sharing more great tunes with you in 2016 and beyond.

10) Kings Destroy - Self-Titled

I've always been of the mindset that when a band decides to "self title" an album, particularly one that isn't their debut, it hints at that album being definitive of their sound…their vision…and most importantly, what it is that they're all about.  Upon hearing the first track "Smokey Robinson" on Kings Destroy's eponymous third record, I knew that to be true in this case as well.  This isn't the first time that this Brooklyn alt-doom four piece has graced one of my year end lists, as I was a big fan of their 2013 record A Time for Hunting as well, and said as much right here.  But the growth that they've shown from that album to this one is substantial, and for that reason, Kings Destroy earned a well deserved place amongst my favorite albums of 2015.

09) Valkyrie - Shadows

Valkyrie are a band that have been around for a decade plus in one form or another, churning out a doom-laden hybrid of classic heavy metal and psychedelic rock.  On their latest record Shadows, a flurry of dual guitar harmonies meld seamlessly with a pummeling rhythm section that carries these seven tracks through a multitude of tempos and paces.  Come for the virtuoso performances, but stay for the bone rattling heaviness.  Shadows remained on repeat for me in 2015, and while picking a favorite on this one isn't easy, go ahead and check out "Wintry Plains" for a sample.  I promise, you'll dig this shit.

08) Weedpecker - II

I was unfamiliar with Polish desert rockers Weedpecker prior to hearing their aptly titled sophomore record II.  My God man, this album is beautiful.  Tracks like "Fat Karma" and "Nothingness" feature soothing grooves intertwined with heavy layers of fuzz and vocals that just barely manage to break through the haze.  The band deftly constrains their heaviness with flourishes of subtlety and nuance that belies the beast within and when Weedpecker truly lets loose, they are devastating.  Give a listen to "The Vibe" as the band transfixes you by way of a delicate jam and then buries you with their heavy groove.  Weedpecker's II was easily one of the best records of 2015 and this band is firmly on my radar going forward.

07)  Refused - Freedom

Seems like I always manage to stick an album in my "best of" list that may or may not belong on a stoner/doom blog and this year that album would be the return of hardcore punk legends Refused.  Nobody…and I mean nobody…is more pissed off than these four Swedes and you'll know what I mean as soon as you fire up the album opening "Elektra" with it's frantic, yet memorable hook and pulverizing vocals.  On subsequent tracks, the band goes from the freaky funk of "Old Friends/New War" to the devastatingly heavy "Dawkins Christ", to the wickedly fun "War on the Palaces" replete with horns and a sing-a-long chorus of "let's carry the dead."  Whether you were a fan of Refused's genre defining, now classic The Shape of Punk to Come or if this is the first time you're hearing about them, I encourage you to give Freedom a listen.  This is the most fun you'll have being pissed off since that time you kicked your little brother's ass for spying on you and your lady friend back in high school.

06) Freedom Hawk - Into Your Mind

How apropos that Freedom Hawk's latest record was released back in June, just as summer was rolling in for its annual three month stay full of sun, sand, and sweat.  These Virginia Beach natives, who also happened to grace my 2011 top ten list (here), have created another masterpiece of soulful, stoner jams that are perfect for rolling down the windows and cruising the strip on a blistering hot day.  Freedom Hawk somehow create jams that sound inherently relevant while also managing to conjure images of the 1970's rock n' roll glory days, yet never come off sounding intentionally "retro" or post-whatever-the-fuck.  I mean shit man, the first track "Blood Red Sky" sounds more Sabbath than Sabbath and the boys never look back from there.  Give a listen to the insanely catchy, head nod inducing, psychedelia of "Lost in Space" for a perfect example of the band's approach.  Taking the beach mentality of their hometown, these laid back surfer boys intertwine an undeniable heaviness with an easy going vibe to create an amalgam of heavy grooving, soulful crooning, and spacey noodling, and that's why Into Your Mind was one of the best of 2015.

05) Kadavar - Berlin

German trio Kadavar have consistently released stellar albums since coming on the scene back in 2010, but with their third record, the band really hit their stride.  Named after their home city, Berlin is loaded with tasty riffs, heavy handed drumming (I mean that in a good way), and groove for miles and miles.  I mean, have you heard "Last Living Dinosaur" for the love of God?  As with any successful music style, the retro-rock thing has become increasingly watered down over the past few years with more and more bands jumping on that bandwagon, but Kadavar manage to make the sounds of yesteryear new again.  More importantly, they craft songs that sound all their own.  Check out "Lord of the Sky," "Stolen Dreams," or "The Old Man" and just listen to the powerful vocals, the adept fretwork, and the thunder behind those beats.  Berlin may be a re-imagining of sounds from the past, but it sounds fresh in 2015 and was one of my favorite records of the year.

04) Baroness - Purple

As I mentioned earlier, I was fairly diligent in keeping track of each album that struck a chord with me in 2015 so that I'd be prepared when it came time to put this list together.  One thing that made it a little difficult was the gnawing knowledge that Baroness wouldn't be releasing Purple until late December, around the time I'd be trying to rack and stack my top ten so that I could write this and get it out to all of you.  Now to be sure, Baroness have become one of a handful of bands (if not the band) that represents the face of this stoner/doom/sludge scene that we all know and love.  Some may disagree with that statement, but I'd argue the fact that they've been invited to play such unlikely places as Coachella and Bonnaroo or that they consistently appear on blogs like Pitchfork and Stereogum, shows that they've reached a level of success that seemingly equates to respect, even from those not typically associated with the heavier end of the musical spectrum.  The bottom line of what I'm trying to say is that this list was never going to be completed until I'd heard and absorbed the new Baroness record.  Given that the Savannah, Georgia band were making a comeback of sorts after a horrific 2012 bus accident that left them physically and mentally battered (and sparked a significant lineup change that saw them replace their bassist and drummer), I was even more interested to see what direction Purple (appropriately named after the color of bruises, according to vocalist/guitarist John Baizley) would take them.  As it turns out, my instinct to wait was spot on, because the new Baroness is easily one of the best albums of 2015.  While "Morningstar" opens the album with a heavy groove that'll be familiar to anyone who's ever listened to the band, it doesn't take long before new elements begin to appear, such as on the second track "Shock Me" which incorporates striking synths and as catchy a chorus as you'll ever hear from a band associated with sludge metal.  Subsequent songs like "Kerosene" and "If I Have to Wake Up (Would You Stop the Rain?)" further show an evolution for Baroness, one that sees them embracing the heaviness from which they came, but also evolving into a fully realized rock and roll band.  These aren't just a collection of riffs and beats to simply nod your head along to, but songs to deconstruct, to understand, and to experience.  Baroness are continuing their trajectory upward and onward and Purple was not only a mesmerizing comeback record for the band, but easily one of the best of 2015.

03) Wildlights - Self-Titled

The duo known as Wildlights is the side project of ASG vocalist/guitarist Jason Shi and Thunderlip drummer Johnny Collins.  Now I'll admit, I'm not familiar with Thunderlip, but I dig ASG (their album Blood Drive was my favorite record of 2013), so when I heard about this one, I was immediately onboard.  Upon first firing up this self-titled debut, the similarities between this band and Shi's main gig were astounding (due in no small part I'm sure, to his distinct vocals) and it isn't immediately obvious why these songs didn't end up being on an ASG record.  Regardless, Wildlights pack ample amounts of melody and punch into these 12 tracks and I'd wager that if you aren't sold right away after hearing "Anchors" and "Rebel Smiles," then this record simply isn't for you, because that opening salvo is a perfect example of what you'll hear throughout this incredible album.  I'm always amazed when I listen to a two-piece band, at how much sound can come from only two musicians and that applies here as well.  Wildlights was by far the biggest surprise for me in 2015 as they came out of nowhere (at least for me) to knock me on my ass and I've returned again and again throughout the year to repeatedly get pummeled.

02) Skraeckoedlan - Sagor

Unlike the previous album, which totally took me by surprise, this is one that I had been anticipating for quite some time, particularly since the debut from this Swedish band was my favorite album way back in 2011.  Four years is quite awhile between records, so my expectations were high for Sagor, which translates to "Tales" in English.  Now I've often wondered how and why Skraeckoedlan aren't a bigger name on the underground, heavy rock circuit…perhaps it's their name, which is impossible to say (and even harder to spell), or maybe it's because they sing almost exclusively in their native tongue.  Whatever the reason may be, I want you to know that if you're reading Heavy Planet, then you need to be listening to this band.  From the opening instrumental "Prolog" which flows into the massive sounds of "Gigantos" to the beautiful female guest vocals that coalesce seamlessly into the bands complex rhythms and chord progressions on "El Monstro," Sagor is an aural journey worth taking.  Listen after listen will have you uncovering yet another layer of sound, something you will have missed on previous spins of the record, and what becomes clear is that nuance and delicateness can be traits of music that is so overwhelmingly and astoundingly heavy.  Skraeckoedlan have created a followup more than worthy of their debut and it's obvious that they used every bit of those four years between albums to create what was most certainly one of the best records of 2015.

01) We Hunt Buffalo - Living Ghosts

Truth be told, any one of my top four albums could have landed here, but Vancouver's We Hunt Buffalo take the top honors this year because quite simply, I played their record more than any other…I just couldn't get enough of Living Ghosts.  Whether it was the bluesy stomp of "Back to the River" or the stampeding drums and caterwauling screams of "Prairie Oyster," this album seemed to hit on everything that I love about heavy music.  Songs like "Fear" and "The Barrens" are weighty, not just musically, but lyrically as well and I found myself contemplating their meanings as I nodded along to their intense rhythms.  And perhaps its that deeper meaning that seemed to permeate this record that kept me returning over and over again.  Late in the album's run time, We Hunt Buffalo take a bit of a psychedelic turn with "Looking Glass" and a theme sort of appears from the haze…a theme that perhaps runs throughout the entire album…"all we are is living ghosts…waiting our turn to fly…my body is a gracious host…that one day will wave goodbye."  Goosebumps for days…album of the year.

NOTE 1: I had no idea prior to putting this list together that We Hunt Buffalo's record was also the album of the year based on reader hits to this site, but I'm happy to know I'm in good company with my selection.  Cheers all!

NOTE 2: I did not include compilations in my list, and instead focused on albums created by a single artist.  If I had decided to include compilations, the re-imagining of Jimi Hendrix' Electric Ladyland entitled Electric Ladyland [Redux] which was masterfully pulled together by Magnetic Eye Records would have certainly found a place on this list. If you haven't already done so, I encourage you to check it out.

Nuclear Dog’s Top 30 Albums of 2015

Following is a list of my favorite albums of 2015. This year I downloaded 539 albums from which I tagged 101 as 'worthy'. Thank you HeavyPlanet.net, and especially HeavyPlanet Radio on Facebook, thank you bandcamp.com, and thank you Richard Jones of Sheltered Life PR from whom my introductions to all 539 albums came. From the centenary list, plus one, of albums I flagged as worthy I settled on 30 favorites, of which I’ve listed here for your perusal and amusement.

There won't be any instrumental albums on my list as I find most of them to be tedious. Yes, that’s a character flaw of my own. Nor will you find any bands that affect a vocal sound, the most common being the growling vocals so common in today’s metal oblations. I prefer a vocalist’s natural sound. Many vocals can be awe inspiring, as much or more than the sound of a gifted guitarist. What you will find here is a narrow mix of music that has at its core a powerful guitar and a guitar pedal amp supplying plenty of fuzz and glorious distortion, at worst passable vocals but at best vocals that match ability and intensity with the core guitar, and employing cleverly to adequately crafted melodies, all of which will be playing classical seventies rock, blues rock, psychedelic rock, stoner/desert/fuzz rock, or a mad mixture of any or all of those rock attitudes. The overriding hallmark of all these albums, to me, is they represent the truest essence of rock and roll. It's heavy, but not the heaviest. It's melodic, but not poppish. It leaves plenty of room for artistic license in melody and lyrics, but always delivers pulse pounding, sweat inducing, primal, tribal reverberations resonating through to the ancestral core of our pattern seeking genes. And what typically differentiates these 30 albums from all the rest released in 2015 are the songs. An album is considered exceptional on the strength of its individual songs. The more great songs on an album, the greater the album. With all that said and hopefully in mind, here are, in descending order, my favorite 30 albums of the 101 I deemed worthy from the 539 I listened to throughout this glorious, monstrous year of 2015.

13. Year of the Cobra - The Black Sun

Perhaps it’s not fair to include a three track EP in a list that contains so many full album efforts, but if the music is damn good, brief as it may be, I feel compelled to include it. Year of the Cobra are an exquisite sound. The beautifully rendered fuzz is solely bass, delivering both the main riffs as well as driving the delicious melodies, while the vocals render a wondrous hypnotic quality, capping off the type of experience we crave when listening to stoner music. And now the TOP TEN -

10. Geezer/Borracho - Second Coming of Heavy Chapter One

Two for the price of one! The underground world of rock often produces ‘splits’, releases by 2 bands on one album, which is a very cool thing. Quite often the music on them isn’t available on any other venue so investing in them is worthwhile in order to obtain the awesome music included. This split from Ripple Music is no different. Borracho and Geezer share a similar sound, not so similar you can’t tell them apart, but similar enough you know it’s blues rock at its finest, complementing each other loudly and emotionally.

The split opens with 4 tracks from Geezer who quickly demonstrate they continue their immense rise to elite rock status. Their songs are all intelligently written, emotionally delivered, fierce in execution, and joyous in the experience, layered throughout with exquisite vocals, blistering guitar, pounding drums, and rumbling bass. You will be hard pressed to find 4 finer blues rock tracks anywhere, this year or any other.

Borracho follows with 3 excellent tracks of their own, laying down a feral, pulse pounding occasion of blues/rock celebration. The guitar-work will bore through to your core, vibrating in rhythm to your primal base, leaving you as exhausted and satisfied as if it had been a physical encounter instead of an intangible electric one .

Geezer hails from Kingston, MY and consist of members -
  Richie Turco Pat

Borracho hails from Washington, DC with band members –
Steve - Lead Guitar & Vocals Tim - Bass Mario – Drums

9. The Old One-Two – Foxbones

This album is a bit unique in its sound and structure. Stoner funk? Could that be a tag to be used here? I’m using it, at any rate. The vocalist has a gritty, funky delivery that is perfect for the melodies The Old One-Two have crafted, as is the predominant guitar sound, replete with fuzzy distortion goodness. The Old One-Two, however, NEVER skimp on BIG sound for their guitarwork, either in amplified undercurrent or in gritty solo scorching delivery, making for a supremely entertaining and satisfactory rock experience on Foxbones.

The Old One-Two are from Greensboro, North Carolina. Their members consist of:

Hawke Kelley, Chadd Myers, Nathan Myers

Favorite Track: Blind and Brokedown

8. Freedom Hawk – Into Your Mind

Into Your Mind, in my mind, mark the return of Freedom Hawk to their best, most stoner rock defining sound, not quite present since their 2nd album, the self-titled Freedom Hawk, which is one of stonerdom’s finest albums. Into Your Mind has a similar quality in which Morton’s unique vocal sound is modulated perfectly to match his super fuzzed out guitars. Make no mistake, Freedom Hawk have delivered a whole new bevy of brilliant music that demonstrate their world class sound and ability, employed gargantuan fuzz, massive bass and drum rhythms, and timeless rock melodies.

Hailing from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Freedom Hawk is:

TR Morton: guitars, keys, vox Lenny Hines: drums Mark Cave: bass

Favorite Track: The Line

7. Fairy Duster – KaraSëa

Beautiful stoner sound is on display with this album of 6 exquisite rock gems. The vocalist is deep throated and clear, displaying vocal strength by never yelling, the guitars are beautifully low and replete with distorted sweetness. The bass is a wonderful presence, not satisfied with laying back and providing simple rhythms, but present front and center providing sweet low hum to complement the searing lead guitar riffs. Melodies are intelligent, primal, and unforgettable. The blend of it all is a super sweet stoner rock elixir.

Fairy Duster hail from Fürth, Germany. Its members are:

Bass & backing vocals Sebastian Fischer Rhythm guitar & lead vocals Dani Jonescu Lead guitar Alex Jonescu Drums Tristan Prögler

Favorite Tracks: Viaţa şi Moartea, Love is a Dog from Hell

6. Aye Mammoth - Lightning and Hellfire

Self styled as a HEEVY RAWK band, Aye Mammoth sets themselves apart with a bevy of incredible, impeccable songs. They have the requisite FUZZED out guitars, exquisite in execution; they have an incredible vocalist who doesn’t strain or yell; and the bass and drums are exceptional; but, the true hallmark here are thirteen – 13! – pulse pounding pearls of perfection, enjoyable in every way. Their sound is a stoner/blues sort of sound, but very unique in that they sound like Aye Mammoth and no one else, and that’s a beautiful thing. Aye Mammoth featured on heavyplanet.net with a Song of the Day in November (HeavyPlanet-Song of the Day)

Aye Mammoth, from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, consist of: Micah Loyed - guitar, vocals; Phil Stem - drums; Paul Haggard - bass

As part of label Heavy Psych Sound you could say they are the banner bearer as the psychedelic rock music Sgt. Sunshine have crafted here is enormous, important, and immensely satisfying, ticking off every stoner/psych/desert/retro rock facet available to be crafted into fuzzy melody. The guitar sound is COLOSSAL, fuzzy to its innermost metaphysical depths, executing a familiar stoner/fuzz sound but with enhanced nuances that matches or surpasses any music in the library of the genre.

This a big stoner/desert/fuzz rock sound, influenced directly from the 90s sounds of Kyuss, Slo Burn, et al., as well as more current bands. They can now add their names to that pantheon of distorted metal sound with this wonderfully crafted album that is one of the year’s best releases.

3. Clutch – Psychic Warfare

Everyone knows the story of Clutch. One of underground rock’s greatest successes, they’ve been around for better than two decades, so the fact is they not only sustain the highest level of rock n roll production, they have actually gotten better, as their last two albums attest. Psychic Warfare is on this list, and on it this high, because it fucking rocks ass! It is the epitome of rock and roll. The best vocalist in the business helps tremendously, but the songs are incredible, the guitars THICK with syrupy riffs, and the bass and drums exquisite in their delivery. My hats off to these Maryland rockers for what they have been able to achieve. I hope the fire continues to burn for decades to come. The song X-Ray Visions was featured in July on HeavyPlanet’s Song of the Day (HeavyPlanet - Song of the Day) as well as in Pete’s Top Ten Albums of 2015, coming in at #6.

Clutch hail from Frederick, Maryland. The band consists of members:

Neil Fallon – Vocals, guitar Jean-Paul Gaster – Drums Tim Sult – Lead guitar Dan Maines – Guitar

Favorite Track: Behold the Colossus

2. The Bad Light – Temples

Dropping in just under the wire is the phenomenal Temples by The Bad Light. These Santa Cruz rockers have crafted a fine psychedelic stonerrock album with their 4th release in 3 years. They employ more than one vocalist, a method that works exceptionally well and should, in my opinion, be pursued by other bands. It makes for an exquisite sound. The guitars are gargantuan, executing tremendous stoner/fuzz distortions, underlain heavily with massive drum beats and mammoth bass. The strength of this album is multifaceted as each song is breathtaking in its psychedelic fuzzy goodness, the guitars, bass, and drums are mighty, and the matching vocals between male and female are tremendous, but what really sets this album up on a pedestal are the songs, each of the 8 tracks beautiful to behold.

The Bad Light hail from Santa Cruz, California and consist of members:

EDU CERRO (GUITAR/VOCALS)
DANA SHEPARD (DRUMS)
EMILY PEGODA (VOCALS)

Favorite Track: Arrows

Before revealing my Number One for 2015 I want to revisit my Number One of 2014, an album that stands head and shoulders above most, even today. It is as unique a sound while carrying standard stoner metal qualities as an album can get. I will tell you the band hails from the Netherlands but you will be hard pressed to make the connection once you spin it. TBT 2014 and Nuclear Dog's #1 Album - Atacames by ¡PENDEJO!

And now without further ado, Nuclear Dog's 2015 Album of the Year! Enjoy!

1. The Midnight Ghost Train -
Cold Was the Ground

Which brings us to the album of the year. If I could have only one album to listen to all year this would be it. The song Gladstone alone is enough to sustain me for quite a while. Steve Moss, the frontman for The Midnight Ghost Train has taken his love for songsmiths young and old, such as Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Muddy Waters, and Edith Piaf, using them to channel his own creativity into the finely crafted music of Cold Was the Ground. HUGE! Huge enough to make Donald Trump envious. The guitars are simply enormous, turned loose and riding roughshod through the clever and exquisite songcraft of Gladstone and Twin Souls, BC Trucker and The Canfield....and the entirety of this relentless force of nature. I can’t recall music eliciting in me the excitement I experienced with the initial spinning of Gladstone since I first heard the one two hammer blow of Thumb and Green Machine. Whenever any new album is discovered, the anticipation upon playing it the first time is for exactly what Cold Was the Ground delivered that fine February day of 2015.

The Midnight Ghost Train hail from Topeka, Kansas. They are:
Steve Moss – Vocals, Guitar | Brandon Burghart – Drums | Mike Boyne – Bass | John Fernandes – Violin (track 9)

There you have it. 2015 was a scorcher filled with a ton of great stuff. There’s another truckload of great music out there that I haven’t even listed here. Stay tuned to Heavy Planet in 2016 for the best stoner/doom/sludge rock on the planet.

Reg's Top 20 Albums of 2011

Well, it's that time of year again when I share what albums I believe to be the very best of the year or at least the ones that I enjoyed the most this year. The hardest thing to do when hearing well over 400 albums each year is to narrow that list down to a Top 20. Most of the bands listed here have been featured on Heavy Planet in one way or another by either myself or one of my talented writers within the past year. So without further adieu, I share with you my Top 20 Albums of 2011. ~Reg

#20. Black Acid Devil-Mountains of Madness

Every year I wait until the end of the year to compile my best of list because there may be one last album that blows you away for one reason or another. This year that album happened to be "Mountains of Madness" from Boulder, Colorado's very own sludge demons Black Acid Devil. "The band plays a fierce blend of Stoner/Sludge metal. By blending monsterous riffs, monumental time changes, furious bass lines and gritty vocals the band beckons the ominous sky like a rolling metallic thunder. As the band states...Black Acid Devil Slays...INDEED!"

#19. Grifter-Grifter

With catchy melodies and memorable hooks, this band from the UK finally got the recognition they deserved from Stoner/Classic Rock label Ripple Music this year. Taking their influences from seventies classic hard rock, Grifter injects a feel good energy, heavy blues riffs, bouncing bass lines and great vocals into a very tasty debut. This album is just a terrific listen all the way through. Get off your ass right now and move to the groove. Check out more about the band at the links below.

#18. Thalamus-Subterfuge

I must admit I am a sucker for great vocals and guitarist/vocalist Kjell Bergendahl doesn't short change you in that department. "Subterfuge" is a great homage to great heavy blues rock bands of the seventies. Scorching solos, powerful harmonies, killer grooves and a banging hammond organ prove that a band can still be great without all of the flash and filler. The band even gets a little doomy on the tracks "When Goblins Cheer" and "Still Dancing on My Grave". Freakin' fantastic!

#17. Maligno-The Funeral Domine

This album by Mexican Doom metal band Maligno was a bit overlooked. Powerful vocals, masterful doom riffage, seering guitars and a classic metal stomp round out a very formidible album complete with guest appearances by Alex Skolnick and acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela.

#16. Eggnogg-Moments in Vaccuum

One great thing about this blog is getting to hear many bands that I would probably never know about. This is a great band that you should know about. After seeing their name show up on other website Top 10 lists it is evident that others are taking notice. "Simply put, Eggnog is brilliant! This band from Brooklyn, NY utilizes a multitude of tones and effects to create a psych-tinged ambience amongst heavy as all hell doom riffs. If you are in search of a spacey, fuzzed-out, infectious, bluesy...I could go on and on and on. Sometimes a band is so good I am at a loss for words."

#15. Red Fang-Murder the Mountains

There are so many great bands coming out of the state of Oregon as of late and Red Fang is no exception. These guys are all over the board with their sound which lends to an amazing effort of overall balance and incredible musicianship. This release did not garner the attention it was predicted and that is unfornuate. Seth states, "I can listen to Murder the Mountains and hear well over a dozen of my most rewarding life experiences without actually hearing about them on the news. Perhaps you can find the time to discover this album, avoid getting arrested, and smile with friends like you know something the rest of the world doesn't. Feels good, huh?"

#14. Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Lust

This is one of those albums that kind of came out of left field. I'm not even sure where I saw it but saw the name of the band and decided to see what they had available on YouTube. I was hooked! They play an acid-soaked late-sixties early seventies inspired Sabbath-like style of doom complete with horrific songs about murder, drug use and the occult. This is unholy doom at it's finest!

#13. Weedeater-Jason...the Dragon

I'm gonna probably take a lot of slack from this, but I thought this album was the pinnacle of all straight-up Sludge Metal releases this past year. Dixie Dave and Co. created with "Jason...The Dragon" another humorous, filthy, and stauch piece of southern-fried sludge. Seth firmly states, "There aren't enough bands like this. Weedeater is nothing more than three free-wheelin' mudslingers who operate on their own schedules and don't rely on your response to stroke their egos. I'll never run out of elements indicating why they should play at your July 4th backyard barbecue; Weedeater perfectly exemplify southern sludge metal. And I can't think of a better way to celebrate a muggy summer holiday than playing with guns, throwing in a lipper, and listening to these guys."

#12. YOB-Atma

Yet another impressive album from Oregon Doom legends YOB. These guys are the masters of the riff. What impresses me about this release is not so much how skillfully each riff is played, but rather the soul and passion that is sweated into each song. For this release, the band has added more depth and dynamics for a build-up that is so intense and powerful. If you have never listened to this band, what better time than now!

#11. The Heavy Eyes-Heavy Eyes

I marvel at how a band can take simplicity and reform it into such an outstanding piece of work. On the band's latest simply titled "Heavy Eyes" the band kicks into heavily inspired 70's blues rock with a gritty southern stomp. The Black Keys are doing it, but the Heavy Eyes are doing it better. Zac states, "Tripp Shumake's vocals and guitar style are soulful, enhancing the southern feel of the record and Eric Garcia's drums and Wally Anderson's bass will have your feet stomping, The production quality is raw and very fitting."

#10. Elvis Deluxe-Favourite State of Mind

These full-throttle rockers from Poland put out quite possibly one of the best straight-forward rocking albums of the past year. The familiar desert groove is there on tunes such as "This Time", but this time around the band adds the sparkle of psychedelia and the ferocity of punk for a more layered sound. As Zac simply states, " Elvis Deluxe, you have completely won this listener over. What a great combination of my favorite styles of rock, this is what I live for."

#09. Black Cobra-Invernal

After seeing these two dudes (that's right I said two) open up for Kyuss Lives! they immediately shot up my list. Actually, to be perfectly honest I didn't even have them on my list. Their blistering live perfomance in front of a rather unfortunately sparse crowd promted me to re-visit their latest Stoner/Sludge/Thrash opus, "Invernal". As Seth states, "This riff-oriented collection is far too immense and far too fast to serve as background music while you wash dishes. Give it your full attention. Let it wear you out like the drunk whore at your block party, and make sure you ask for seconds. "Invernal" will burn and blister, but it's gonna heal a lot better than the stupid tribal tattoo you just sat through."

#08. Wizard Smoke-The Speed of Smoke

Doomy, fuzzy, psychedelic, unworldly, spooky, what else could you want. This is an exceptional album from beginning to end. As Seth states, "The Speed of Smoke", so fully encapsulates what Heavy Planet is all about...sit back as you’re guided through a black cosmos." Not only that but the album is avaible for FREE! Astonishing.

#07. Freedom Hawk-Holding On

I think the thing that keeps bringing me back to this album time and time again are the songs. As Toby states, "these are songs…songs that you’ll want to return to and that’ll have you singing along by your second time through the record. They are both catchy and memorable and in this day and age, that’s to be commended. Also notable is the fact that Freedom Hawk avoids the current trend found on albums by many of their peers to extend songs well beyond a reasonable run time. This is a band who clearly understands that less can in fact be more and that it’s actually a good thing to leave their listeners wanting just that…more." Besides the gift of great song-writing is the obvious high-pitched Ozzy vocal comparison. These guys are a great band that write great songs. Fly High Freedom Hawk!

06. Elder-Dead Roots Stirring

Since making my Top 10 of 2009 with their self-titled release, Boston's Elder has been on my radar with avid anticipation. With their latest release "Dead Roots Stirring", the band has built upon their sound and taken it into very epic boundaries. Devastating heaviness, spellbinding rhythms, and more psychedelia took the band into a new direction and hope they can expand upon it for their next release sure to make another Top of the year list. As Zac states, "The instruments, vocals, and lyrics are truly cohesive here, not one over-rides the other. Each work in perfect harmony fabricating a new sound of (what we all like to call) 'Heavy'.

05. Sungrazer-Mirador

This album is stunning proof that desert rock is alive and well. This Dutch band is at the forefront when it comes to playing extended stoner rock jams a la Kyuss. The thing that takes this album to a whole new level is their fondness for spacey psychedelic rock and building their songs around a simplistic riff until reaching an exploding climax. "Mirador" is an absolutely brilliant piece of work and should be in everyone's Stoner Rock playlist.

04. Borracho-Splitting Sky

These guys are showing up on just about everyone's lists this year and deservedly so. Everytime I get done listening I immediately hit repeat and will probably continue to do so until their next release. "DC’s Borracho have crafted an absorbing debut album that says “we’re ready to join the club.” My recommendation is that you get onboard with this one right now…because chances are, you’ll be paying good money to hear Borracho play it “in its entirety” ten years from now. Splitting Sky is an instant classic. It’ll blow your mind that this whole thing started out as a side project."-Toby

03. Valley of the Sun-The Sayings of the Seers (EP)

Cincinnati's Valley of the Sun seemlessly blends blistering stoner grooves, stellar musicianship, and high energy low and high dynamics to their amazing sound. Oh, and did I mention that Ryan Ferrier may quite possibly be the best rock vocalist I've heard since Miles Kennedy and Chris Cornell. From the unmatched soaring vocal harmonies of opener "Hearts Aflame" , the epicness of "Mariner's Tales" to the steam rolling groove of "Deep Light Burns", Cincinnati's Valley of the Sun is a well-polished band that is ready to be singed into your brain." I will be waiting patiently for a new album by these guys, hopefully in 2012 so it can make my list next year.

02. Wo Fat-Noche del Chupacabra

It is no secret that Wo Fat is probably one of my new favorite bands after their incredible 2009 album "Psychedelonaut" made its way onto my Top 10 of 2009. I could not wait to hear their latest CD "Noche del Chupacabre" and man it did not disappoint. After my first listen I declared it worthy of Top 20 of 2011 status. It stood up through the course of the year amongst so many great CDs, but this thing just got a stranglehold on me. If you enjoy being "sucked through the doors of a hoodoo hut in the middle of a swamp which leads to the extraterrestrial vastness of the universe" then Wo Fat's remarkable psychedelic Stoner/Doom blend may be just what you've been searching for. Doom on Wo Fat!

01. Orchid-Capricorn

I guess what drew me into San Francisco doom band Orchid is how eerily similar they sound like my favorite band of all-time Black Sabbath (minus Ozzy sounding vocals). The feel of the album has a very retro production as if it could have been recorded back in the early seventies and I think that is what I enjoy most about this album. The riffs are enormous, the soloing tremendous, and vocals superb. I can pull this album out at anytime and truly enjoy every minute of it, thus making it my solid numero uno for 2011!
