FESTIVAL CALL FOR BANDS

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
7th ANNUAL NORMAN MUSIC FESTIVAL - NORMAN, OKLAHOMA
This coming April in downtown Norman, Oklahoma, just 20 miles south of Oklahoma City, will be held the 7th Annual Norman Music Festival. Over the course of the past 6 years in which the festival has been held it has grown in stature by leaps and bounds until now it hosts over 300 bands, 50,000 spectators, and generates millions of dollars in revenue. It rivals, but perhaps doesn't yet match, SXSW in Austin. It is on a steady growth track, however, and no festival is safe! It is a weekend filled with fun and music and is a great time for all involved. I, though, would offer up the prospect that the fuzzier contingent of rock music has yet to be sufficiently represented at this fine event. I would dearly love to change that eventuality, so I am posting the open call information published by the festival promoters in hopes that many of the fine bands and types of bands covered by Heavy Planet will apply to attend this coming April of 2014 and show the Wild West what loud, low, furious, and fuzzy rock is all about.
Please click on this link - NMF 7, APRIL 2014 - to apply to attend and give the people of the Southwest an experience they won't soon forget.
Discover New Bands on Heavy Planet
It has come to my attention that to make the blog more interactive and informative the need for a "sounds like" or "for fans of" distinction within the post would help readers discover new bands in a more concise manner. Here is the fun part, starting today with the "New Band To Burn One To", instead of one of us determining that distinction, you the reader will choose. Simply leave the name of the band in the comment section. Now when you are navigating through the endless sea of band names in the archives, you will be able to narrow it down to bands similar to one you are a fan of. Feel free to go through the archives and leave a comment on any past post. Unfortunately, that would be the only way to tag past posts and then I could update the archives as necessary. Look for many more exciting things to come your way in 2013. Thanks for being a fan of Heavy Planet!
Forgotten Tomb, Isole Added to Dutch Doom Days VII
Italy`s Forgotten Tomb and Sweden`s Isole have been confirmed for the Dutch Doom Days VII festival, set to take place October 25 - 26 at Baroeg in Rotterdam, Holland.
The festival billing is shaping up as follows:
Saturday, October 25
Forgotten Tomb
Isole
The Lamp of Thoth
Mourning Dawn
GriftegÄrd
Subrosa
Wizards of Doom
Beneath the Frozen Soil
Faal
Sunday, October 26
Worship
Skepticism
Pantheist
Faith
Fall of the Idols
Ophis
Hooded Priest
The festival organizers said in a statement: "The organisation succeeded to establish a strong program which gives a good insight into the cross-section of the doom metal genre. This special form of metal can be defined by its down tempo and (in most cases) filled with emotional loads. Black Sabbath can be seen as one of the founders of this genre. Besides the well-known confirmed names, Baroeg knows how to present the best new upcoming bands at the festival year after year, what is truly appreciated by true fans of the doom genre. Bands such as GriftegÄrd, The Lamp of Thoth and Wizards of Doom are top-class bands that will debut in the Netherlands at Dutch Doom Days VII. During this year`s edition, two Dutch bands, Faal and Hooded Priest, will be introduced. In total sixteen bands will play."
Album Of The Day-The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight-"The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight" (2000)
The Album Of The Day is "The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight" by The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight.
With its combination of Black Sabbath's dirgy riffing, Deep Purple's organ flourishes, and absolutely no vocals (!), the Mystick Krewe of Clearlight is a peculiar side project featuring members of Southern sludge rockers EyeHateGod, Crowbar, and Down. It is also undoubtedly one with limited commercial appeal, as the extended instrumental jams on the band's eponymous album will certainly prove a major stumbling block for less open-minded listeners. Forget the short bursts preferred by similar all-instrumental retro-rock combos like Karma to Burn. The Mystick Krewe likes to stretch, and without the commercial trappings imposed by lyrical conventions, its music is free to soar uninhibited for seven, eight, sometimes eighteen minutes. In fact, compulsive head nodding is guaranteed to ensue during standout cuts like "Electrode," "Trapeze," and "El Nino Brown." An interesting journey. (Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide)
Track Listing:
01. Swamp Jam
02. Electrode
03. Ride Out
04. Trapeze
05. A Fool's Outfit
06. El Nino Brown
