New Releases For 3/9/2010

Here is the only new release that I saw this week.

Year Long Disaster-"Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed" (Volcom)

"On its second full-length, this Cali trio makes a convincing claim to be a modern Soundgarden, consistently locating both deep pockets and trippy cloud-patterns for their blooze-howled sludge. Following a brief but doomful instrumental title intro, "Show Me Your Teeth" kicks things off celebrating the carrying of firearms in the city. Six-minute centerpiece "Sparrow Hill" locks into the set's most Sabbath-like swing; "Seven of Swords" and "Foggy Bottom" pastorally search for black holes in the winter sun. They save their fastest riffing for the aptly named "Cyclone," at album's end." (Chuck Eddy)

Year Long Disasters Premiers New Video

Hot on the heels of a five-month European tour, including dates with Velvet Revolver and Dropkick Murphys, Year Long Disaster makes a triumphant return to their hometown of Los Angeles to celebrate the release of their first music video. The animated video for the single, "Leda Atomica," was written and directed by Matt Maiellaro and his team from Aqua Teen Hunger Force/Adult Swim and is making it’s worldwide debut on the Adult Swim website.

Year Long Disaster is the hard-rocking power trio of Daniel Davies (son of Dave Davies from The Kinks), Richard Mullins (Karma to Burn) and Brad Hargreaves (Third Eye Blind). In addition to Rolling Stone’s ringing endorsement heralding Year Long Disaster as one of the Best New Bands and one of the Ten Artists to Watch in 2008, YLD have been garnering praise from critics and legends abroad. Rock Sound picked Year Long Disaster as one of the bands that will own 2008 and heralded “big old rock riffs are the backbone for this bad-boy trio.” And Motorhead`s Lemmy enthused, “Year Long Disaster plays rock n’ roll the way its supposed to be played!”

Album Of The Day-Year Long Disaster-"Self-Titled" (2007)

The Album Of The Day is the self-titled full-length debut from Year Long Disaster.

Review:

The problem with bands that try to sound like Led Zeppelin is that they never do: they sound like bands trying to sound like Led Zeppelin. Granted, it's a bit more complicated than that with Year Long Disaster. On their debut album, you'll hear plenty of other influences as well, from the energetic Southern rock shuffle of "Leda Atomica" (which actually sounds like a tossed-off collaboration between Zep and ZZ Top), to the Cream and Black Sabbath references that peek out from around almost every corner. Originality is overrated in rock music, and these guys deserve credit for embracing their influences without shame. And there are times when they succeed in breathing new life into these tired tropes — "Cold Killer" is certainly not original, but the band fully owns that song's mastodon groove — and there are also moments of startling originality, such as the complex and brilliantly rocking "Swan on Black Lake." If Year Long Disaster can digest those influences just a bit more fully and get past its taste for staggeringly pretentious song titles ("Leda Atomica," "Galea Aponeurotica," etc.) then the band may be headed for great things. (Rick Anderson, AMG)
