NYC's own gaggle of cocks has been makin noise for 10 years now. Though there have been twists and turns, we are back with a new line-up and a new album, Low Class Trendsetter! Recorded at Riverfront Studios in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and produced by Stacy O'Dell & Pat Harrington, the buzz around this release has been electric!

With Charles Ruggiero now providing the massive drum attack and special appearances by Chris Goercke on guitar, we return with a new sound, but the same ole attitude you've come to expect from GOC! This album will set the standard for NYC bands for years to come...

THOUGHTS: "Sometimes there is absolutely nothing better than just some good 'ole stripped down, rugged and intense rock and roll. New York City's Gaggle of Cocks does just that on their latest album "Low Class Trendsetter". Without getting too wordy with unecessary adjectivity, this band delivers a high-energy and blistering display of potent white trash hard rock. The songs are short but definitely not sweet. With a gravel fed vocal delivery and furious fret board mayhem, you will be bashing your head into the wall with scorchers such as "Black Helicopters" and the bass-driven barrage that is "Guy Supreme". While the band isn't exactly "new" by any means, check out their 2008 release "American Trash" for more highfalutin debauchery."

Thursday Playlist of Doom V4: CMJ Showcase Special Edition

Normally on the Thursday Playlist of Doom we would fill your ears with heavy ear-shattering doom tracks. Today we have decided to do something a little different. In honor of the Heavy Planet CMJ Showcase at Fontana's Bar in NYC here is a sampling of each band performing at the show. This playlist features the psychedelic alt-rock of New York City's Shock Radar, the atmospheric stoner/sludge of Boston's Summoner, the psych-doom of Brooklyn's Eggnogg, the desert rock of Cincinnati's Valley of the Sun, and the riff-bringing stoner barrage of Washington DC's Borracho. This is a show that is not to be missed. Hope you get a chance to go. If not, then enjoy the tunes!

Heavy Planet To Host CMJ Showcase This Thursday in NYC

HEAVY PLANET CMJ SHOWCASE

Heavy Planet is taking over Gotham.  That's right folks, as part of the annual CMJ Music Marathon, which takes place October 16 - 20 in various venues throughout New York City, Heavy Planet will be hosting a showcase of the finest that heavy music has to offer.  If you're anywhere near the Big Apple on Thursday, October 18th, I promise this is a show you do not want to miss.

Kicking off the event will be the experimental stoner rock of NYC locals Shock Radar, followed by the riff slinging of Boston's Summoner (no wonder they used to call themselves Riff Cannon).  And sure to keep things heavy, Brooklyn's Eggnogg will be bringing their blend of ambient, bluesy, stoner, psych-rock to the lower east side.  In need of a fuzz fix?  No worries...Cincinnati's Valley of the Sun will scorch your soul with enough decibels to fill 10,000 deserts.  And finally, hot off their performance at this year's Stoner Hands of Doom Festival, Washington DC's very own Borracho will bring their massive groove to the stage to lay waste to whatever's left of Fontana's.

New Band To Burn One To: ONLY LIVING BOY

HEAVY PLANET presents...ONLY LIVING BOY!

BAND BIO:

They’ve been called “the band The Black Keys are too afraid to become” (ninebullets.net), and judging from the road they’ve taken, who the hell would want to be Only Living Boy? Thanks to their hometown’s suspension between Pennsylvanian woods and New York City concrete, Only Living Boy’s Northwest New Jersey roots help define its sound and attitude— gritty and hard-nosed with a well worn sophistication.

Prepping to release a trio of EPs over the course of the next 6 months OLB’s sound now drifts closer to the attitude and weight of Black Sabbath and Hawkwind, the stoner sludge of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss and the experience and mood evident in the Tom Waits/Mark Lanegan inspired vocals. The first single, “Spread Your Butter”, is a stoner rock sock hop, Eagles of Death Metal would blush to put out.

The trio of EPs will all be released under the band’s own Wurli Records label with each EP grounded in a different theme.

As the blog Pop-Break recently put it..."Only Living Boy might be named after a Paul Simon song, but this band will not be politely strumming their guitars about the sounds of silence — they will be breaking a bottle of whiskey over your head and melting your face off with pure rock fury."

THOUGHTS:
" After gaining some exposure from the placement of their song "My Heart Is Burning" on the new A&E series LONGMIRE in early September and a recent best unsigned band award in High Times Magazine in August, the band looks to firmly plant themselves as a band to contend with. Having released two LP's and two singles (one on 7" vinyl) the band has started to gravitate towards a heavier stoner sound. Judging from the 2 song "single" released on their Bandcamp site, the band are no slouches when it comes to writing catchy stoner rock ditties. The first tune "Spread Your Butter" is a rollicking fuzzy stoner stomp that will blow your socks off, while the flip side "Scrambled Eggs" has a little more of a grunge flair. I love this band's diversity. You will be hearing more from Only Living Boy, I guarantee it! Keep an eye out for the first of two more EPs (tentatively titled "Fuck Metal") due out Nov. 27th."

BORIS: New York City Concert Footage Posted Online

MetalKult.com has just posted four new concert clips from BORIS. The footage was captured on March 4, 2008, when the Japanese doom-psych-drone trio played before an excited crowd at New York's Knitting Factory. The band was in town to support its latest release, "Smile".

"Smile" was released on April 29 via Southern Lord Recordings. The follow-up to 2005's "Pink" features contributions from previous collaborators such as Michio Kurihara and SUNN O)))'s Stephen O'Malley.

"Smile" is the second BORIS album to feature vocals on every track (the first, excluding any one-track albums, was "Amplifier Worship"). Also, it delves more into experimental tendencies with a more manipulated sound and even experiments with samples.
