Tricorn - "The Walk of Shame"

Lock up your wives and hide your daughters (and make sure all the household pets are alive and accounted for as well while you're at it) because those pirate bastards in Tricorn have set sail from their native Portsmouth again with all sorts of nefarious shenanigans in mind on their sophomore voyage The Walk of Shame. It becomes immediately apparent on leadoff track "Lady" that their campaign for world conquest will be advanced through the employment of pulverizing riffs and pummeling rhythms, as well as vocals from Paxo Dyne that are straight out of the Lemmy school of larynx shredding (actually to my ears they're highly reminiscent of Orange Goblin's Ben Ward). They also employ a secret weapon that is often underutilized by many bands today: the infectiously memorable chorus.  Hell, I've probably sang the line "Play your lady's favorite song; I'll slap that ass and move along" so much at work since hearing it I'm actually in danger of being sued for sexual harassment.

Melodic choruses aside, The Walk of Shame is far from a civilized tea-and-crumpets affair. From the reptilian brutality of "Serpentine" to the pugnacious pugilism of "Step Outside", Tricorn instigate their aural onslaught with all the subtlety of a broad axe being wedged in your cranium. The track that's easily the most emblematic of this savage assault is "Falsify". With a deliciously wicked riff (and a decidedly eighties vibe) it jackhammers its way into your skull and pulverizes any grey matter it encounters. Elsewhere, "Astral Dreams" undulates its syncopated charms while "Black Devil's Smoke" insidiously infiltrates your consciousness with a hazy diabolism. In sum what these swashbuckling hooligans have unleashed is a collection of tuneage suitable to serve as the soundtrack to all your pint-swilling, tart-shagging, head-banging adventures.

EP Review - Triumph of the Wounded by Crybaby Deathmatch

Crybaby Deathmatch are a 3 piece from London UK, who play dirty punk influenced trad doom metal sounding like some twisted Motorhead-on-acid style rock n roll crossed with Slo Burn and even Dinosaur Jr.

Originally called Needlebliss in the late 90's and ripping off Iron Monkey they kept jamming and listening to tons of down-tuned blues metal until they decided to write proper songs and play some gigs.
The founding duo of North Londoners Coley (guitar, vocals) and Del (drums) were then joined by Frenchman and magician, Jerome on bass in 2012 and thus was born Crybaby Deathmatch.

From the opener, Controlled By Machines, we are treated to some down-right sleazy doom riffs which lead to a filthy, heavy rock slice of dirt slathered with a thick layer of agro/anarcho-punk. This is the kind of song a bunch of pissed up and pissed off Brits sing while smashing pint glasses in the street and chucking bricks through windows after having been booted out of their local pub. Later on they will spray paint massive A's for anarchy on the wall of the local school and will still be chanting this song.

With this strong opening track Crybaby Deathmatch show they have a great sound and attitude with vocals that are equally as memorable as the riffs. It grabbed my attention right away and I immediately fell in love with this band.

Fragile Stars follows. Imagine desert/stoner metal as if played by Motorhead. Not that we have deserts here in the UK and certainly not in North London where these boys hail from, but this track is an excellent piece of desert style stoner metal with great lyrics that had me singing along even though I didn't know the words, just 'woooahahwoooo-oh.' etc..

It reminds me of Slo Burn but with Lemmy on vocals, singing a song what I initially interpreted as being about heart break and a broken relationship but is most likely about something else entirely like the infinite vastness of the universe.

Boiled Shark (The Impossibility of Death) is very much in the same vein, although starting with an old school punk intro which then falls into Lemmy singing for Slo Burn again. The riffs are delivered thick and fast and despite its heavy desert edge there is still that layer of early 80's British Anarcho-punk rock attitude. Bottles are being thrown and shop doorways are being pissed on. Fuck you very much Maggie Thatcher for screwing our country. Welcome to Great Britain.

Nimbus changes the vibe laid upon us by the first 3 tracks with an intro that reminds me of Dinosaur Jnr playing a ballad. The Dinosaur Jnr influence carries this track for the most part until the final minute when it goes into a filthy rock sleaze with some stinky wha'd bass riffs that feel like a wad of phlegm stuck in my throat just before I hock that chunk and flob it out onto someones car window. Not that I would actually do that now, but when I was 14 and listening to Dinosaur Jnr a lot, that kind of thing was a regular occurrence.

The final track, Triumph of the Wounded takes us into doom metal territory, sounding almost like very early Electric Wizard or Iron Monkey. It is a slow paced down-tuned sleaze ball of a track with the vocalist sounding like Lemmy again. The filthy riffs are piled on until the pace picks up some adding a trad doom feel to the track. This sounds like the sound track to an early 80's greasy greebo lank haired metaller in a denim cut off plastered with band patches heading for the pub to drink away his giro (unemployed benefits cheque for those outside the UK).

This a strong first release from Crybaby Deathmatch where they display their influences very well and then blend them together seamlessly. Each track very much has it's own substance with themes ranging from experiences of life in the UK's sprawling and hectic capitol that is London, natural disasters and the weather, the inevitable collapse of civilisation and the pressure of modern living, to abstractions of reality and universal contemplation, something the wordsmith of the band calls the 'Awe of the Ominous.'

Triumph of the Wounded is available now as a free download from their bandcamp.

New Band To Burn One To: THUNDERBEAR

HEAVY PLANET presents . . . THUNDERBEAR!

Band Bio:

Thunderbear is a 3 piece sludge/doom metal band based out of Wilmington, MA. We are heavily influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Sleep, Kyuss, High on Fire, Torche, and really any band from the stoner/sludge/doom genre. We formed in 2009 under various different names, and actually started as a classic rock cover band, which changed once we discovered Sleep and decided to start to write songs in C tuning and make them slow and heavy. We have been jamming with heavy riffs and exploring the endless possibilities within the genre. We began listening to bands like High on Fire and the sludge/doom metal scene and began to explore those realms as well.

Thunderbear consist of:

John Grealish - Bass, Vocals
Peter Ammon - Guitar
Aristide Palm - Drums

THOUGHTS:

I love Thunderbear's BIO. They began as a cover band of classic rock standards until they stumbled across the shadowy underground world of sludge/doom/stoner music. Okay, I've embellished it a bit, but this tells a story familiar to many who frequent our awesome site, or who are purveyors of this wonderful music. We all love rock, and we love it on the heavy side, and once stoner/doom/sludge music is discovered we are hooked for eternity. Thunderbear made the change from covering music to making music, such was their inspiration. And make it they do, very well. They have stayed with one cover on this EP, the assumption being it is their favorite, their most inspiring song, Sleep's "Dragonaut", but the original tunes on this EP are very well constructed and equally as well executed, adept and forceful in delivery. Grealish's vocals are magnificently suited to this style of music. Ammon's guitar, both in solo and in riff refrain are tribal and severe. Palm's drums and Grealish's bass are huge, frenetic, and thoroughly enjoyable. There are hooks, there is melody, there is heart, and there is a fresh, honest, worthy addition to the type of music lovers of Sleep, Black Sabbath . . . Hell, all of Stonerville, Doomasschusetts crave.

Rumor: HEAVEN AND HELL, JUDAS PRIEST, MOTÖRHEAD To Tour Together This Year

HEAVEN AND HELL, JUDAS PRIEST and MOTÖRHEAD are strongly rumored to be teaming up for a North American tour later in the year (as partially predicted by BLABBERMOUTH.NET on January 17, 2008). It should be noted, however, that this information has not yet been corrobated by an official source and should be considered a rumor only at this point.

HEAVEN AND HELL is currently writing material for a full-length studio album, tentatively due late 2008/early 2009 via an as-yet-undisclosed record label.

HEAVEN AND HELL played the final show of its U.S. tour with ALICE COOPER and QUEENSRŸCHE on October 6, 2007 at the Verizon Wireless in Irvine, California. Before the encore, Indie 103.1's Full Metal Jackie presented the band with gold plaques on stage to honor U.S. sales in excess of 25,000 copies of the group's "Live at Radio City Music Hall" DVD. Vocalist Ronnie James Dio thanked the fans for their support, then dedicated the encore song ("Neon Knights") to veteran KNAC DJ Tawn Mastrey, who died in early October of liver failure brought on by hepatitis C.

JUDAS PRIEST's upcoming tour will include shows where the group's entire upcoming "Nostradamus" album (based on the legendary 16th century prophet Nostradamus) will be performed as well as concerts featuring the band's classic songs.

MOTÖRHEAD entered the studio in January to begin recording the follow-up to 2006's "Kiss of Death". A late spring/early summer release is expected.

"Kiss of Death" entered the national album charts in the following countries: Germany: #4, Norway: #9, Sweden: #13, Austria: #20, Switzerland: #26, U.K.: #45, Denmark: #53. The CD was recorded at the Paramount studios in Los Angeles with Cameron Webb, who also worked with the group on 2004's "Inferno". The album includes guest appearances by POISON guitarist C.C. Deville and ALICE IN CHAINS bassist Mike Inez.
