LP Review "Estron" by Slomatics

Ireland's Slomatics have been around since 2004 and in that time they have put out numerous releases and have appeared on splits with the likes of Conan. Their fourth full length LP "Estron" shows that Belfast born Slomatics are easily as heavy as any of the heaviest bands you are ever likely to hear. Slomatics are bone breakingly low-end and have mastered the art of boiling their riffs down into simple yet extremely heavy weight drones that give a few nods to Torche/Floor in a rumbling earthquake of bomb strings.

The 7 tracks that make up "Estron" give you little time to catch your breath from the chest crushing freqs that are delivered in punishing waves of massive and explosive doom riffs, except that is for the 6th track "Red Dawn" which serves as a kind of retreat from the storm of pulverizing heaviness. That is not to say that every track on "Estron" is a relentless barrage of lowness as there are captivating moments of psychedelic droning atmospheres and experimental use of effects and synthesizers that show Slowmatics are about far more than just playing the biggest and heaviest riffs that 3 humans can possibly produce together without causing serious injury to themselves and anyone who is listening. "Estron" is very close to being dangerously heavy and this is at the core of Slomatics' sound but the futuristic psychedelic sound-scapes produced by these 3 Irishmen make this album one of the most enjoyable listening experiences so far this year.

New Band To Burn One To: BALEFUL CREED

HEAVY PLANET presents...BALEFUL CREED!

BAND BIO:

Baleful Creed are a four piece band from Belfast ready to pour out their classic rock influenced tunes in a passionate live performance. Featuring a dual guitar team that lay down head-nodding chunky riffs that touch on the Stoner Rock sounds of Black Sabbath, Danzig and Fireball Ministry topped off with soulful vocals that are fuelled by the powerful bass and drum rhythm section.

THOUGHTS:
"If you like your music heavy, soulful and played with passion then let your speakers fill the room with Northern Ireland's Baleful Creed.  Fierce dual-guitar driven hard rock with a southern flare and classic rock riffing is the inspiration for the 5 songs contained on their latest EP "Buried Beneath". For a monumental ass-whoopin' check out lead track "Baleful Creed' as well as the smokin' EP closer "Suffer in Silence". I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this band puts on one hell of a live show. Oh, and don't let the fact that they have the word Creed in their band name fool you. Now it's your turn to crank this mother!"

New Band To Burn One To (Evening Buzz): NOCTURN

NOCTURN is today's "NEW BAND TO BURN ONE TO"  Evening Buzz...

Photo courtesy of Matthew Alexander Patton

Bio:

We are a three-piece rock band hailing from Belfast. We’ve been going for a few years now, but recently have started to make some noise on the local scene.

All three members are graduates from one kind of music degree or another, and all teach their native instrument as well as a variety of other things ranging from Music Technology to Harp.

We have taken a break recently to write and record our debut album (Collision), which we are currently promoting heavily through touring in Ireland. Before this break we had a few pretty high profile gigs which gave us some attention from BBC Radio Ulster, AU and ATL; we performed our interpretation of Nirvanas ‘Lithium’ at Oh Yeahs ‘Nevermind Revisited’ night, performed with LaFaro and A Plastic Rose at ‘Up in the Attics’ 80th gig celebrations, and the launch gig of our second EP ‘Out of the Blue’ was the focus of a BBC2 TV show called Magic Party, hosted by Joe Lindsay.

"Belfast heavy rockers Nocturn decimate your eardrums with their highly energetic combination of 70's inspired classic rock, modern stoner riffs and 90's grunge. Gritty balls-to-the-wall vocals, solid bluesy guitar playing and catchy melodies will leave you wondering what the hell just hit you. Listen loud!"

New Band To Burn One To (Evening Buzz): IAGO

The Evening Buzz edition of "New Band To Burn One To" today features IAGO.

Bio:

After having met in late 2002, Matt Green and Matthew Fulton (or “Bowski” as he is known to many for convenience sake) started jamming in 2003. Later joined by Nathan Miller in 2004, the three-piece IAGO was born.

Many gigs, jams and self recordings followed and in 2006 we released our debut EP ‘The Devout Sessions’. After extensive gigging throughout the country for the next couple of years we earned a reputation for being different than your average band. Not only did we switch around on instruments but many people were unable to label us with a genre of music. A couple of sayings did stick with the band members though. They were “doom-laden stoner grunge” and “black grunge”. Phrases/genre coined by people just for IAGO.

Having enjoyed our escapades into the local music scene we returned to the studio and stayed there until we had something we were happy with. While it took longer than expected, we got there and the end result is ‘Mare ex Fumus’. Our plan now? To tour the country far and wide, then further afield. And then further some more.

We hope you’ll join us.

This three-piece band from Belfast, Ireland exudes a down right dirty brand of heavy grunge rock with a metal edge. From the driving rhythms, the thick as hell guitars and a unique throaty vocal, IAGO are dark, sick and twisted rather than depressing and withdrawn. "Black Grunge" indeed! The band will soon be releasing their EP "Mare ex Fumus". Contact the band for your copy!
