New Band To Burn One To-Aseethe

The "New Band To Burn One To" is the one-man (Brian Barr, ex-Law of All Ends) doom/shoegaze/noise outfit Aseethe from San Fransisco, CA. If you are a fan of bands such as Sunn O))), Isis, Jesu, etc. then this is right up your alley. Check out their current split release "Navitas Est Dues" with Mauul and watch for the future full-length release "Iron Mountain" due out shortly.

Review:

"I know what you're thinking - two one man bands, each with a single track pressed on an obscenely limited split (109) released by a tongue-in-cheek record label - this is going to be pretentious drivel. But it's not.

Fortunately, Aseethe (Brian Barr) and Mauul (Phil Mauul) opt for experimentation that's palatable, engaging, and ultimately worth more than a couple of shock-your-brain listens. Aseethe's "Ill Omen" is the natural synthesis of amplifier worship, noise, and shoegaze. The mighty guitar riffs have great overtones, the keyboards sustain delicate melodies, and noise tweaks create cacophonous counter points. The live drums lend a strong groove to the music that is absent from similar endeavors, and give the music a sense of urgency. The noisy interludes are sandwiched between monster riffs and beautiful melodies, "Ill Omen" is expressive in a manner similar to Jesu, but is ultimately more varied and cathartic.

Mauul's contribution is "Filament," an experimental track that's half warm, easy listening and half fiddling-with-the-input-jack glitch. Not only is it full of warm tones, but it's ambient enough to enjoy with completely shattering musical sensibilities and expectations. The last third of "Filament" is the most interesting (you can fill in "varied" or "challenging" if you prefer). Both Aseethe and Mauul offer genuine, experimental music that's not just accessible, but damn good." (Nick DeMarino, StonerRock.com)
