Album Of The Week-Zeus-"07" (2007)

The Album Of The Week is "07" by Zeus. The band hails from Amsterdam, and combines elements of old school heavy rock, melodic groove and even some doom. The band released an equally awesome album in 2005 called "Bad Signs" which they plan on re-issuing in case you didn't get it the first time around. For those of you familiar with the band you know what I'm talking about, for those that are not what the hell are you waiting for?

Review:

ZEUS is a Groove Rock band from The Netherlands, and “07” is their second album. It starts off the album with a Samuel L. Jackson sound byte from Die Hard With a Vengeance (“Don’t fuck with me or I’ll shove a lightning bold up your ass! Zeus!”) which seems vaguely fitting for a groove laden Stoner Rock album.

The best description would be that they play Stoner Rock, mixed with some Grunge and Doom influences, and the result is a record with a lot of crushing riffs guitar riffs played with a very dirty guitar tone, raw and gritty vocals and a driving rhythm section. The band mixes the best of Grunge (ALICE IN CHAINS & SOUNDGARDEN) and BLACK SABBATH. These guys aren’t trying to re-invent the wheel or splice genres or write pretentious music. ZEUS is fun, plain and simple.

The biggest draw to the record, though, can also be considered its biggest flaw. It’s not treading new grounds by any means, and the fuzzy guitar tone kind of makes the songs sound a lot older than they actually are, so if you are expecting something revolutionary, you’ll be disappointed. If you can get past that, and considering that the music is great you should, this is one hell of an enjoyable record. Albeit, a bit short.

It’s simple, heavy, groove-laden and fun music. It’s great BLACK SABBATH worship, and that’s fun to hear. (Armen, Metal-Observer.com)
