LP Review: King of Worms by Never Before

A lot is going to be made about this bands origins, and it’s a fair point to focus on, because there aren’t a lot, or indeed any, stoner metal bands hailing from Beijing, China. But that is not enough alone to make us want to tell you about Never Before, we’re talking about this band because, my word, King of Worms is one kick ass record!

Despite being Chinese, the band don’t sing in their native tongue, instead using English to appeal to a wider audience, and as soon as the music rains down upon you during opener ‘Born To Lose’, location and origin mean nothing, and the power of the riff takes over. The opening track is one of the more doom-esque tracks on King of Worms, with hints of classic rock/thrash poking their heads out at every opportunity. It’s a nine-minute track showcasing all of the band’s talents. The band begin to have some fun with second track ‘Killer or Survivor’ as the groovy stoner metal elements kick into full swing. This is a band who like to have fun while rocking with their balls out! ‘Drink, Fuck, Puke’ is one of our particular favourites here, using elements of the power of old school punk before the heavy swathes of grooving stoner riffs kick in, creating a glorious few minutes of head-thrashing.

As the record develops, the riffs get rawer and louder: ‘Wild Dog’ sounds like it was recorded inside the exhaust of a Harley going 100 through the desert plains, ‘Cold Blood Mike’ is an earthquake of stoner metal riffs to delight everyone reading this blog! ’10,000 Years of Sleep’ may as well be a tribute to said band (Sleep that is) with its heavy drawn out riffs creating a glorious cacophony, while the full-on metal assault of ‘Fall’ quickly awakens the senses once more.

From start to finish, King of Worms is an enthralling listen. There are elements of doom, stoner, metal, punk, all played with incredible energy and skill, with riffs to make your face melt and savagely band the remains to a pulp! China has over 1.3 billion people living there, and these five guys are standing on top of the stoner metal food chain! Let’s see what else you guys have got!

“DRINK, FUCK, PUKE!!”

New Band To Burn One To: Goatschlager

It has been a while since we’ve wrapped our ears around some new funky hard stoner rock, probably not since the last Clutch record. However, there are some grooving beats emanating from Northern Ireland’s Goatschlager which has our ears pricked and knees-a-swayin’. The Ballymena four-piece are raw, but they play a sound reminiscent of said Earth Rockers with a slightly more spaced out vibe running through their meaty hooks and bouncing riffs. Their debut offering Space Apache Vol 1 is direct and to the point; the want you to get down and dirty to their funky grooves, and even in our aging bodies, we feel compelled to oblige. There’s enough partying here to go round!

Teacher LP Vinyl release on Devil's Child Records June 17th

I just heard about Teacher a couple months ago from Mike and Rachel of Devils Child Records. Teacher is comprised of 2 Teachers-Jonathan Ethan Mercer: Drums, Guitars, Vocals and Solomon Arye Rosenschein: Guitar, Vocals, they both transplanted at different times to Seattle but somehow came full circle to once again play some tunes and teach?
I was stoked to see their name pop up on the band submissions so I jumped at the chance to review this album knowing we will be sharing sound waves soon at the Substation in Seattle for D.C.R's Heavy fest day 1. with other D.C.R alum as well.
When listening to Teacher its hard to pinpoint a specific "genre" on them, but Stoner Blues, 70's Metal, space rock, classic rock influenced will do just fine. . They cover a wide spectrum of sounds on this album which keeps it fresh and not repetitious. My favorite track right now is panoptican, I feel the last 4 tracks were written in a similar vein so they run together as if it was meant for vinyl. I guess I'll ask them when we play in July and I'll give it a spin next week when I get it in the mail! You can buy the digital album now or wait until June 17th to buy the Vinyl.

LP Review: Olde One Ascending by Vokonis

When Earth is no longer big enough to contain your seismic riffs, the only place left is the infinitely expanding dimensions of space, and that is exactly where Swedish heavy stoner/psych trio Vokonis firmly thrust themselves with their debut record Olde One Ascending, with riffs capable of bringing down planets, drumming the depths of a black hole, and vocals with the force of star imploding, the band have gone all in and left nothing to waste. Anyway, that’s enough of the space analogies, let’s get to the music.

The record opens with the thunderous ‘Olde One’; eight minutes of pure heavy stoner rock, charging ever forward after it falsely appears to head into a space rock direction. There are hints of the bands psychedelic roots and the underlying sound of doom, but the gigantic rolling riffs bring about hefty head banging. The vocals of Simon Ohlsson are passionately shouted with more of a ritual echo rather than anger, a little reminiscent of early Black Pyramid. The loud drone of the vocals remain at a constant attention grabbing level throughout the record, as ‘The Serpent’s Alive’ follows a similar route but leaning towards more psychedelia routes as the killer guitar solo takes your tripped out subconscious by the balls and reminds it who’s boss.

The guitar work and drumming are at an excellent standard, wielded by talented musicians who wear their influences on their sleeves (mainly Sleep) as the power of ‘Acid Pilgrim’ melts the speakers, the sheer stoner audacity of ‘Shroomblade’ is orgasmic to listen to with riffs to destroy the heaviest of hearts, and closer ‘Hazmat The Ashen Rider’ releases a cacophony of riffs directly into your face without an ounce of apology. The six songs on offer here fly by in an instant, but the whole record leaves you with your fists clenched, and a feeling that what you’ve just listened to was just about as heavy as it gets (and just in case you didn’t realise the name of this blog, that’s how we like things around here!). Olde One Ascending is an excellent heavy record and if your speakers can take it, get a hold of a copy now!
